Just wanna share my PRS SE CUSTOM JUN CASTRO SIG

got my guitar from Jun Castro, a total overhaul for my loved one. My PRS SE CUSTOM 22 in GRAY BLACK.

REVIEW:
There hasn't been much love for my PRS this past few weeks because i effin Fcuked up my graphtech nut.  i have been to other luthiers, the one i have a bad experience, the other one in sta mesa was too far for me (had good experience with him, i had a custom tele from him before). So i was browsing philmusic and i remembered Mr Jun Castro.

Its a mistake that i went to him last. His talent in setting up guitars are superb. Did i mention his ears are good too?

so i brought my PRS to him, and told him everything he needs to know about it. he then diagnosed my problem. one of it was my intonation. HUH? i always thought i was super OC about guitar set up, especially intonation, up to the very minute cent.

reality bites, he did not tell me i was wrong. HE SHOWED ME. suddenly my ears opened up.
another thing. output from my pickups were not balanced. he showed me, i heard it. another light bulb moment. i thougt ok na yung out of the box dimarzio, i dint bother to change the pole pieces. akala ko walang diff yun, at ok lang na wag i adjust.

well then we talked and talked about guitars, set ups, and what nots. i stayed there very long. i was listening and gaining knowledge from him while he was asessing my guitar. really nice guy.

afterwards, he told me his findings about my guitar. he told me everything, but he said, i can choose kung ano lang papagawa ko. ang important daw ay nasabi niya sakin ang problems na nakikita niya, para aware ako.

but then, i chose to fully entrust him everything about my guitar. its my first time with him, but i really want to try his services. so i just told him, "kayo napo bahala sa guitar ko."

hindi niya minadali ang gawa sa guitar ko. he even took the time to have a "break in" time for his set up, so he could have minute final adjustments pa.

then the day came. i was excited.

first thing i tried: DIVEBOMB. abusive divebombs one after the other. divebombs wanking type. and oh my it stayed in tune..

next, the nut. pretty bone nut! nicely cut! malinis! did i mention it looks pretty? i opted for bone nut coz it matches my pup rings and selector switch.

next: fret levelling and crowning
i press heavily on the guitar so may dents na ang frets ko because of everyday usage. oh i checked it, no dents again, like new! did i mention, theres no buzz? bending was so smooth, like a hot knife through butter.

next, PICKUPS.
adjusted polepieces looks so cool. damn cool. volume was so even, chords are pleasant to hear.no notes are left out. balanced.

next, intonation:
this is the [gooey brown stuff]. tried chords at 12th fret upwards, as high as i can get.
omg chords are so clear, and it sounded like you are at the lower frets. i had so much fun playing chords! i was so into solo improvisations that i missed how much fun chording is, especially at higher frets, when you chords sound so clear, like dead on ang every note.

i dont know if i missed out anything. ill post when i remember.

one thing ill say to all, especially PRS owners:

give your guitar a favor and bring it to Jun. every peso is well spent.
he exceeded my expectations.

most of us spends thousands of pesos upgrading our guitar, while i realized, you just need a pro set up from a talented luthier to sound really good.

Yan ang nangyari sa kin kanina.  LAWL!!!

After quite some time, i paid Jun a visit this week to have a couple of guitars setup.

Easily, there are at least 50 guitar cases stacked in his main work area. Not counting yung mga nandun sa attic nya.

Kaya kung may gitara kayong di pa nacclaim dun, let's do Jun a favor and help clear his shop. (not to mention, pay the man his due)

I already offered to clear his shop of some guitars that have been left unclaimed for years. I offer almost everytime I visit. Ayaw niya e. Hehehe.

Before you go there, make sure that you'll inform him and set an appointment first.

Would anyone mind to share how exactly this goes? Ako kasi, I check tuning open and 12th fret, pagkatapos para sure I take random notes and check their octaves too, the 12-fret apart thingie.. kapag ok na tune, ang akala ko well intonated..

Pitongjerome said he was OC regarding intonation, and I guess he's well more versed in intonating than me.. and yet he said he was MADE to see his previous ways were wanting..

Can anyone share how to really hear (or even see ) how to intonate properly? Kung pwede lang i-ping si Pitongjerome, for him to share how'd it go..  :-D

Someone really has to teach you that face to face. We don't know how sensitive you are to discerning differences in pitch. I mean a lot of us initially believe we are sensitive enough. I certainly thought I was. But in reality, that is not always the true case. I start having trouble making out differences in pitch when bending an eighth of a step.

Relying on an electronic tuner might even do more harm than good. They usually have difficulty tracking differences between octaves.

I agree with Al.

I've tried intonating solely using tuners, but i never get entirely satisfied with the results, for some reason.

Jun, on the other hand, is very keen on measurements, just as much as the actual intonation (tuning) of the frets. I guess thats the value added from a bona fide luthier.

one of the first things he does is check kung "tama yung sukat" ng gitara mo. i.e. the fret spacing, the bridge, and the nut. kung may issues about the measurements, iaadjust nya yung nut mo, if it can't be compensated by the bridge.

i can also attest that he doesn't solely rely on measurements and tuners to intonate. he "sweetens" his tuning para maganda resonance ng mga nota, esp. when playing chords sa upper registers. benchmark lang nya yung tuner.  pag saliwa sa tenga yung result, Jun will tweak it further.

It's hard to explain, but it's not magic. Neither is it always perfect. but all i know is that it works for me.

Plus he's a straight-up nice guy to deal with, who makes an effort to get to know you and your likes and dislikes. so when you hand him a guitar to work on, he will know what you want from it. so i guess that adds to the experience.

Mismo to.  Pero I think it's magic!

What about wiring and electronics? I got 2 guitars that need some work on that aspect. Would you guys recommend Mang Jun for that?

he can probably help with that. although it would be best to consult with him over the phone first, just to be sure.

For common wiring, sure. But if you have something specific or funky in mind, it's best to hand him a diagram.

Thats what I like about Jun, he has integrity. Kahit unclaimed na for years he still waits for the true owner.

Just had my frets and fret board replaced by Kuya Jun. The best pa din gawa nya.
