Title: Help! Starting a guitar home recording rig
Post by: satch on January 24, 2018, 05:50:55 PM
Hello mga ka-PM! Starting 2018 with learning the ways of home recording. Well, sama mo na dn ung starting to play guitar again aftr a long hiatus.

Hindi ung tipong full band demo kind of recording. Maybe in the fututre? Who knows, pero for now, probably some overdubs or playthrough sa backing track. Although i did mga 7yrs ago pero it was using a GT-10, behringer audio interface and garage band. Im tryin this time a DAW recording, zero knowledge.

So to start, What do you use as audio interface? Read a lot about focusrite scarlett and mukhang ok. Pero inclined to listen to inputs as well.

:)

So, after ilang bwan pag iipon, finally got an interface a few nights ago.

My thinking was, mag behringer nalng ako. Specifically the Uphoria UMC204 HD. Really cheap, and zero skills naman ako using DAW anyway so magandang pang practice?

Then bigla nagbago isip ko and decided to get the focusrite. Why? Mas marami ksi gumagamit, not jumping the band wagon ika nga, pero in case na mangailangan ako ng support, mas malaki chances ko na meron friendly internet peep na sasagot sa mga tanong ko. Less frustration, sana...

How about u guys, ano gmit nyo?

Bali ganito,

Guitar>amp modeller (XLR out)>interface>USB to laptop.

Interface (TRS out)>Monitor speaker

Hope i made sense?

tried bunch of interface..
nung gumamit ako ng 2i4 feeling ko mas swak talaga sya mic in setup..
so far Edirol UA-25 ang pinaka nagustuhan kong Guitar > Interface > Pc setup

sa 2i4 over kill I think..
not unless gagamit ka tlga ng midi controllers or other midi devices, mics, etc..
sold my 2i4 for that reason.

good luck brader! sana sa 2019 ako nman mag simula ulit..
focus muna sa baby ngayon  :-D

Ohhhh first, goodluck sa baby! Mas mahalaga yan over anything else :)

Ung modeler na gamit ko kasi is capable for line outputs so utilizing its potential na dn thru XLR in sa interface.

Thanks for chiming in! Hope to see your inputs soon!

Oohhh the pad. Yep! Fractal Audio AX8 gamit ko with max output kaya needed the pad turned on para hindi mag clip. Tama ba? Clipping ako without the pad.

Still learning gain staging and leveling ng AX8. So far, ive tried recording random stuffs, meh, needs more more more time doing this recording thing hehehe.

Ano gamit mo DAW?

dont put the ax8 output to the max level para may enough room ka pa sa recording.
yung yung maganda sa scarlett kasi may clip indicators that will guide the user regarding the head room and how they should adjust.

naka sonar x3 ako and reaper :)

Ohhh! Reaper dn sna ggamitin ko. Kso since ang meron ako is mac (mb air nga lang) i decided mag logic pro nalang ako.

Hmmm about the output ng ax8 naman, the pros advices output ng ax8 at max for unity gain. When properly done, dapat ang input signal sa DAW is nasa -12db, which should provide enough headroom?

Gain staging and leveling the output ng ax8 is another topic, kailngan ko aralin pa to sadly.

Question:
Let's say wala tau line6, ax8 or anything for the sake of discussion. Puede nman dry input tpos effects nalang sa DAW dba? Ano ba dpat iconsider, like sample rate, or kng ano man when recording like setting up ng DAW?

- 9 to -12db or as long as di nag cclip.

if ever walang modeler. we can use the effects sa daw very very limited. pero oks na ako sa fab filter at waves at sa le pou. sample rate basta 44.1 no more no less.

medjo OT:
kamusta naman mga patches ng ax8? or how you dial the tones?

Thanks! Sige, i'll go for it. Bahala na si batman ika nga. i'll try to record something and post it for discussion.

Re: ax8
Stock patches para saken is ayos na ayos, some tweak here and there for personal preference. Sounded great, at least for me.

Tweak cya by knobs and scrolling sa mala gameboy na screen. E zero gear ako nun nagbalik guitar ako so  wala dn ako laptop. It was a learning curve, malaking curve!

Pero once u get the hang of it, maeenjoy mo na. I belive most modelers can sound almost alike depende sa pag tweak. Its just a matter of mastering your gear. E utol ko nga gamit old RP-500 ko nappa wow pa dn ako hehehe.

Glad to see someone starting out with home recording. It will only mean for you more playing and less gas for gear. Anyways, I'm a Focusrite 2i2 user. I used to mic my amp when recording but since I got married and had a kid, lumipat ako sa paggamit ng LePou stuff. So far so good for me naman. By the way, my recorded stuff right down there on my sig.

Goodluck!

NOt much of a gear gassing guy and mas worried ako sa ability ko to play so meron long ako is guitar, effects, computer and now this 2i4 interface. More practice and playing time and talagang mas kailangan ko

Well, I just dial in my preferred settings sa amp sims (I use the Legion on the left and the Lecto on the right), load cab impulse (gamit ko yun marshall cab ni Fearcomplexmusic from YouTube), record 2 different tracks (one for left and one for the right channel) and try to record as tight as possible.

I use the preset guitar EQ of Reaper. Meron Marshall-esque and Fender-ish type of EQ presets. Then another usual EQ to clean up the unwanted bottom and high sizzles.

Try mo i-search si Frog Leap Studios sa YouTube. He has a lot of different approach in home recording.

Leap Frog Studios, subscribed.

Yung tracking 2 guitars L/R channel i hear a lot. Will definitely try pag natuto na.

Scarlett 2i4 user here, I tried using amp sims but didn't get to work on it that much.
Reaper for DAW kasi it just works and for the price walang tatalo
Amp to interface ang binagsakan ko. Hahaha!

Amp > Load Box > CAB IR Loader > 2i4

Drum software:
Pwede ka mamili between Addictive Drums, EZ Drummer, o Steven Slate.

i3 will suffice. I used to record on an ancient Pentium 4 with 2gb or 4gb RAM. May times na gumagapang but still got the job done. Hehe!

Hi nice thread!

I'm a Presonus Fire Studio Project user... what can I say? Preamp is superb. My DAW is Presonus Studio One 3, maganda kase if Presonus din audio interface mo may feature siya para patayin yung latency sa monitoring pag recording.

Dati naka mic yung cab (using SM57) pag recording ng guitars pero ngayon I'm using Avid Eleven Rack na, ganda ng tunog... Pero minsan mic parin ako ng cab, may ibang buga kase pag analog yung source.

Ano gamit mo pang mic? (headphones, studio monitor)

wow, ok so eto meron ako ngayon > guitars, line6 m9 - (not sure if it can be used in the chain) tsaka yung laptop haha
So ang naiisip kong kailangan
1. interface, which is focusrite at m audio lang yata ang familiar ako, sa JB meron starting yata is 9k.
2. mic pang vocals, no idea on this at cables of course

Get the focusrite 2i2 studio bundle. Bang for the buck na yun to get you going.

Or get the focusrite 2i2 interface lang,  plus audio technica at2020 (xlr) + xlr cable.

Or focusrite 2i2 + shure sm57 + xlr cable.

Download reaper as DAW, and download free amp and cab sims.

Pwede ka din bumili ng plugins(vsts) gaya ng guitarig amplitube etc.(yan na lalabas na amp and stomps mo) then superior drummer or addictive drums (for drum programming). medyo mahal to, pero madaming free alternatives naman.

Yan chief rak na yan

Guys, pano mag upload ng video dito? Or kailangan youtube talaga?

I managed to do a one take record kahapon. Simple plucking with sabit sabit all around. No other tracks than the guitar. Stock preset with no tweak. Meh, bahala na kako. Its a start.

Gusto ko lang masubukan hit ung record button to get the feel of it. No harm naman kung susubukan diba? :)

youtube talaga (only way) :0

btw, time will come, bibili ka rin ng bass. I started with a strat then an interface then a lapton. Afterwards, bumuli ng bass.
Then the cycle continued. Hanggang makabili ng Bx5, midi keyboard at electric drums.

To add.

you can also try uploading your songs via soundcloud pero FYI pag post mo dito nun marami mag rereply at ngayon wala ka ng babasahin kundi EQ,Compressing and the likes.

Para sa akin, so far so good.

Paglaruan mo yung stock effects ng DAW mo then explore from there.

Nga pala, always play along a metronome. Yan ang secret ng tight recording.

Laki ng studio monitor mo hehe! Ganda niyan! I have the smaller model, eris 5 :-)
Regarding bass track - your call bro, pero para mas buo yung sound ng mixdown mo, might as well consider it - low end is low end, madalas yun yung frequency na unang naapreciate ng listener
Check out Modo Bass or Trilian (much better) if you have extra budget hehe! All you need is midi controller na lang

So mero akong time today. 2nd take. Random stuff. Guitar lng kase wla ako bass and drum software. Meron ako ndownload MDrummer Small by Melda Productions, anyone familiar? Di ko pa install, siguro later pg meron ulit time.

Tried tracking 2 guitars then only EQ is added sa logic pro. I focused dialing in tone sa floor pedal ko para hindi ko na kakalikutin virtual effects ng recording software.

Tama ba workflow?

If you are planning to do all the parts by yourself, metronome is the key.

Aaralin nalang muna and more practice. And more youtube tips on recording.

Yung iba naman eh tools/buttons/menu eh more on "better workflow" na. Basta alam mo yung basic like"creating track" "arming track" send/return etc.. Ok na start na yun, yung iba matututunan mo along the way. Malalaman mo kelangan mo eh. Sa totoo lang lahat kami dito eh sasabihing  "learning" pa din kami, kasi napakadami talaga dapat matutunan (except for kitc though alam yata nun lahat).

kung maccover mo siguro basics as a start, good to go ka na. The rest can be learned along the way.

To summarize, below is my list that i think helped me get started.

Hardware:
-Guitar
-Guitar cable
-USB audio interface
-Laptop or Desktop

Software:
-Recording Software (Logic Pro, Reaper, Cubase, etc.)

Operation:
-Learn how to add or crate new track in the recording software
-Learn how to arm the track and record .

The rest follows. Playback, mixing, etc. Im sure marami pang subjects meron regarding this topic, i may or may not learn them in time pero as a start, this is what i have learned so far.

Would love to have something like sir boxedking's records, ayos na ayos un! For now puro press record, play and practice muna :)

Salamat sa mga inputs! :)

Yo, I'm starting to do home recording as well BTW I'm so low on funds at the moment so I do it with a Xenyx502 and Reaper. At the moment, I'm trying to focus on getting the wall of sound. Do you guys have any thoughts on how to achieve this? TIA! :)

lots and lots of reverb.

When I say reverb, your choices are: reverse, shimmer, parallel, particle, and so on and so forth.
A subtle chorus or phase.
Delay in 16th or 8th division.
delay with slower time and longer feedback
then fuzz

disclaimer: This is my own experiment since I'm playing dream pop/shoegaze music. There are a lot of options you can do to achieve wall of sound kind of music.

Guys, hope it's not an offense if I unearthed a 2years+ old thread hehehe...

Now, I managed to put together a home recording ng full band cover ng isang song.
