That power conditioner will be only as good as your grounding system. If only isolation transformers were affordable. :?

that's a good point KitC.

make sure your electrical wiring has proper grounding.

right jc, i'll check with them.

i've searched on google on isolation transformers. there's one for 595 usd. but then i guess if you have to ship an object that heavy (8.2 kilos) then you'd have to cough up more dough.  how does it work Kit?

Sorry for the late reply, Hazel. I had to brush up on my Elec. Eng'g. theory.

In a nutshell, an isolation transformer gives you a 'cleaner' feed of electricity by physically separating the power company feed to your studio's power circuit. In essense, all transformers are isolation transformers, but iso transformers are built to handle the loads required of them while minimizing the transmission of noise from the outside circuit to your studio - a certain amount of faraday shielding is built into these transformers.

The outside power circuit is unbelievably noisy. From electric motors to flourescent ballasts to RFI interference; even Meralco's ground wire (the topmost single wire you see in transmission lines) is noisy. Although most of our gear have filters in the power supply, it was mostly meant to stabilize variations in power. Noise filtering is a secondary function, but, invariably, some of this noise creeps into your equipment. The iso transformer minimizes the intrusion of this powerline noise. It is still dependent on good grounding, though. The secondary coil feeding your studio has it's own ground separate from the ground in the primary coil.

After my rather futile attempt at explaining iso transformers, I think this site can better explain the principle.

Kaya pala yung tube preamp na ginawa ko ang ingay. Took the plate voltage directly from the AC mains (325V ang required eh). But I bought a large filter choke, lessee if it can mitigate the noise.

Does anyone here sell iso transformers?  I've been looking for high wattage ones... so far, I can only use online ups boxes for lower wattage gear (PC, effects, processors).  As much as I'd love to use online stuff for everything, it's too expensive, and high wattage amps can't run off them.

KitC, read the site you posted... can you correct me if I understood this right..

Seems to me that an iso transformer is a dual transformer... AC->DC, then from DC->AC.  That seems to be how I understand it, in a nutshell... with the final stage inverter, taking more stable DC current, and giving you a stable AC output. (It seems similar to how an online UPS works, sans the battery)  Did I understand it right?

All I see are coils. If I remember my EE right (it is a bit rusty), transformers don't work using DC. Where were the inverters you were referring to and which figure in the site?

I read an article recently about some converters/inverters that use high frequency switching to create AC current from DC voltage. The resulting switching frequency induced EMI/RFI noise into the power circuit. IMO it would be defeating the purpose of isolation if you were to include such an inverter into an iso-transformer.

aight KitC. Switching regulators are very noisy due to the high switching frequency. You'll need to beef them up with large caps and maybe an inductive filter choke to minimize AC noise.

Iso transformers are actually 1:1 transformers. 220VAC in, 220VAC out. You can have one made at Deeco. You can also try to put two 220 to 110 transformers back to back. 220VAC->110->110->220 . That should work. Double isolation pa :D .
