you can't go wrong with any of the two cameras you mentioned... with the correct techniques both cameras could take exceptional pictures using their kit lenses.

The only draw back of the d40 against the 400d is that it has no internal motor for autofocus. If your lens doesn't have a drive motor your stuck with manually focusing the lens.

canon user here. and im embarassed to see that picture as a sample. it sucks. and it doesnt represent what the camera is capable of. and a comparison shot of a scene that's not even the same is kind of weird...

i'm a 400d user. been one for a little over a year now and i've also used nikon d40s on a few occasions. personally, not a fan of the nikon. colors are great n all but low light noise sucks pretty bad. and that really matters to me.

overall though, you really cant go wrong nga with either one. i've seen some amazing shots from both. it just depends on the user.

I'm trying to factor out angle, objects, the circumstance of a steadier hand, etc. For me, colors themselves, parang pareho lang.

Pero sabi nga ng kaibigan kong photographer... it doesn't matter nowadays yung subtle diff in colors and texture... may Photoshop naman e.

Photoshop? Yes solution yun para sa maling color pero pag 500+ pics na ang e-edit mo within 2 days hindi na puwede mag sayang ng oras para lang mag correct ng color. One of the reason why I chose Nikon. Canon for me is reddish.

im a nikon user. the two pictures above obviously shows na mas maganda yungkuha nung nikon, most probably, dahil kita yung reflection nung dagat. eh paanong hindi makikita yung reflection nung dagat, eh mukhang yung nikon shot ay naka circular polarizer na filter tapos yung canon shot ay medyo matagal yung shutter speed. kung ganun nga, makakakuha talaga ng reflection yung nikon at yung canon ay hindi.

i hope humbucker would also put the EXIF on both these pictures. im sure hindi pareho yung "techno-mumbo-jumbo" nung mga photos.

alam nyo mga tol, parang paggigitara yan eh -> wala sa pana yan, nasa injan yan. so canon or nikon, depende pa rin sa photog yan.

yeah i agree with kawal. in addition to that, dapat 100% crops din ang ginamit na photos na pang compare para makita pixel by pixel kung gaano ka sharp magrecord yung ccd/cmos sensors ng nikon and canon.

also take into consideration that some camera parts are not exclusively manufactured by nikon and canon. for example, both canon and nikon (on of their some models) use sony manufactured ccd sensors. memory by toshiba, etc...

with regards to color, there's a setting called white balance. some prefer to use the default setting while others (like me) prefer warmer looking photos. Malaki din ang difference yung file format na ginamit sa camera kaya i exclusively shoot in RAW (which limits 8gb memory cards to 310 shots) then batch convert to high quality JPEG using the software bundled (picture project) with my camera.

again cameras are just tools. the one who peeps into the viewfinder presses the shutter.

tignan natin ulit mabuti mga sir at linawan ang mata   kung no pp talaga ito magkaiba talaga kulay. possible may cpl yung kuha ng canon kaya nawala yung reflection. dami ko na nightscapes na-compare ko na yung shots ng canon sa nikon kahit sagad mo white balance ng nikon sa tungsten +3 iba pa rin output ng sa canon hindi mo mahabol sa white balance settings lang. kaso minsan gusto ko yung kuha ng canon minsan nagsasawa ako sa output ng kulay ng nikon. yun lang po at linawan lang po natin ang mga mata salamat po!

^sir, magandang gamitin ang circular polarizer para ma-eliminate ang reflections; pero mas nagagamit ko sya generally para ma-control yung reflection (and not specifically eliminate it). i'd use CPL sa ganitong mga night shots para lalong ma-enhance yung reflection, and at the same time may control ako.

isa pang comment ko, ang pagkakaalam ko ang katapat na model ng Canon 400D ay Nikon D40x, at ang katapat naman ng Nikon D40 ay Canon 350D.

sir nakita ko mga shots mo astig idol sama naman ako pag may photoshoot ka! tsaka pakita na rin sample ng nightshots mo with cpl hindi ko pa kasi nasubukan yan sa nightshots with reflection... pero normal naman lumalabas yung reflection sa tubig lalo na kung long exposure tsaka small aperture sa ganung angle kaso nga lang sobrang bright kaya maganda nga siguro may cpl rin para ma-control yung reflection. bale yung mga kuha ko sa riverbanks ganun rin ang resulta kaya nasabi ko na yung shot ng canon malamang may cpl kasi nawala yung reflection. next time invite ko yung barkada na canon user gawa kaming sample shots ng same eksena pag nagkaron ng time... 
eto mga sample pics sa riverbanks taken last dec 24th-25th mn dun na kami inabot ng pasko kakahanap ng lechon manok

pero nagbawas yata ako konti ng saturation sa ps kasi sobrang makulay nung kuha ng d40 kahit nasa normal yung settings ng camera sa color...

^ganda ng mga reflections ah! galeng. kung hindi masyadong maalon sa mga shots mo, lamang ka na nun. kasi pag medyo maalon (katulad ng dagat), tapos long exposure ka, hindi mo talaga makikita yung reflection. prime lens gamit mo dito no? hula ko 50mm f/1.8

ay salamat sir kaso kit lens pa lang gamit ko dyan yung 18-55mm wala pa pambili ng prime. pero balak ko rin yang f1.8 nakakabitin na sa low light yung kit lens eh. siguro pag dumami ulit raket pero sa ngayon medyo wala pa eh kaya baka mag-photog na lang ako madalang areglo ngayon hindi na kayang bumuhay ng pamilya. sorry po o.t. bigyan nyo naman ako raket dyan... hehehe!

1. white balance setting
2. ISO setting
3. aperture and shutter speed setting
4. resolution
5. same day, same time (very important!)

I use a 350D and I'm happy with it. However, Nikon shutter buttons are very
nice to the touch.
