IMO lang, graduate na tong si Kakoy kay SRV.  Dami na nyang iba at bagong elements sa pagtugtog since Mr Crayon days... unpredictable pa kung ano trip nyang gawin -- mag slide, regular, or even harp.  After a long jam a few years ago he told me that he's not really focused on blues anymore.  He can play blues as well as the best out there but he's really matured to sound like himself.  Ergo...

Kakoy Legaspi = Kakoy Legaspi of the Philippines

+1  It's not so much that he can cop the licks; it's that way in which he attacks the songs, yung spirit ng style ni SRV, pati dynamics at paglaro-laro, andun!  Blueskrieg ika nga (hehe... plugging ng cd namin!)

I never really liked this habit of labeling. It just lowers our reputation as musicians and as Filipinos.

I think we can find our own identity and we don't have to be stuck to being labeled somebody's version in the Philippines.

When I watch my client's gigs (someone labeled them as Megadeath), I didn't think they were a version of some famous band. Listening to their old tracks, I found them unique and not like anyone of today and of yesterday, foreign or otherwise.

There is one person though that deserves a label. But decorum dictates that I don't post it here. He might get riled up.

Binigyan na ata sya dati ng label, "Ed Roman of the Philippines".  I'm sure he's tickled pink by that, though.
