Home recording. How to get started? Need tips!
« on: June 19, 2015, 07:13:05 AM »
What apps or softwares do I use?

Honestly, I am clueless. hehehe!

 :-)

Just need some ideas on how to get started like, how to overdub, multi-layered tracks, how to add programmed drum sounds, etc.

Thanks Fellas!

For reference, I use REAPER DAW, Independence Free for drums and synths, mics for acoustic recording, and DI for electric guitar and bass through Amplitube 3 or Guitar Rig 5. I also use a 2 in USB interface.

Multi-Tracking:
-set metronome
-add 1 track
-program a drum track here, or
-arm the track and record a drum/percussion part, and/or
-disarm first track (if with drums/percs)
-add new track, arm new track
-record bass part
-disarm track, add new track, arm new track
-record rhythm track,
-disarm track, add new track, arm new track
-and so on

How to add drum programming:
-set bpm
-add new track
-add drum software instrument plugin to the FX
-Insert New MIDI Item, then punch in your drum pattern or pick one from your preset patterns in the plugin, or
-hook up your keyboard/digital drums via MIDI
-arm track, set input to MIDI, select the correct MIDI channel
-hit record, play your pattern

How to overdub:
-select a starting point on where you want to overdub
-mark the point by pressing M. pressing the corresponding number will bring you back to that point
-record
-if not satisfied, press the number, then record again

I use guitar rig for effects etc :)

I just use my laptop, guitar link and Samson condenser mic :)

BTW yung software na gamit ko libre lang sa mic...

Samson Go Mic. Nice portable mic...

60 day evaluation period.

You need EQ, Compressor, Delay/Reverb at most. All built-in. Try also other third-party VST such as Guitar Rig or Amplitube. Google is your friend.

your choice if you want to use mics or plugins. just note that you need good mics and good amps if you want at least a decent sound when micing guitars.

Better start reading then...

Setting up your PC for Recording
What do you want to learn about recording?

Read this! Very informative thread.

Anyways for DAW i use reaper sa desktop, i record vocals on an old laptop sa bedroom(mas tahimik dun) kaya audacity naman DAW na gamit ko dun, pero mixes are done on reaper.

For plug-ins , marami makukuha dun sa (kay coy2cute din yata galing yung link) bedroomproducers blogspot! Karamihan free.

You dont need specific sound card naman kung basic recording kasi yung interface mo na ang sound card.
