Guitar Wars
« on: January 16, 2016, 12:13:32 AM »
Hey guys, I need your advice. How should I deal with my co-guitarist in our church?

Kaso pagdating sa P&W, may inner struggle pa rin sa part ko when it comes to our chemistry as the guitarists for the team.

Ayoko na makita niya yung rhythm guitars in a negative way, every member of the band is important kaso parang hindi tuloy namin magawa na laging ma-reach yung 100% namin kasi kulang sa cooperation. Yung tipong kanya-kanyang tugtugan ba nangyayari.

I make way for him kasi ayoko na ring magkaroon ng tension kahit indirect. Gusto ko magbigay sa kanya ng payo sa pagtugtog (dynamics, when not to play, etc.) kaso may nagho-hold back sakin, iniisip ko kasi baka maging awkward lang yung situation.

How should I handle this? Kelangan ko ba muna i-evaluate yung sarili ko? Is it an issue of pride on my part? Or is it just because I am not communicating well with him?

Thanks for taking time to read my post.

Hi bro,

I guess you guys have to talk kung ano yung role ng bawat isa. (sinong sa maglelead/play rhythm for this service) or who will take the higher/lower register. It will be helpful bro yung open communication on and off the band/team context. HTH.  :)

Hey man,

Agree ako kay Mikz. Talk with him and the team. Samin kasi, usually, yung nagpreprepare ng line up also prepare kung sino yung mga tutugtog at sa kung anong mga part kasi medyo madami kami sa team. So for example, this sunday naka toka ako sa rhythms, even though sa ibang sundays lead yung hawak ko, rhythms ako this sunday. Pag may ganung malinaw na toka toka, walang sapawan.

Also, I think hindi necessary na may ganung feelings between you two. You guys are brothers in Christ, so sana walang bad feelings pag nagbibigay tayo or nakakareceive ng correction or suggestions from our co-worshipers. So we should feel free to constructively correct yung mga teammates natin, and we should also be constructively receiving their comments. I highly encourage na simulan mo to, para maencourage din syang mag share sayo. :)

Lastly, let's pray for our teams. Usually, sa emerging praise and worship team lalo na yung mga gumagaling/magagaling, we neglect yung spiritual part nung tugtugan. Let us not forget yung true purpose natin is to worship the Lord.

God bless bro and I'll pray for your team as well!
If there are encounters, there are partings as well

Thanks for your advice guys. Siguro nga dahil madalas hindi malinaw yung role namin kaya may time na nagiging kanya-kanya yung tugtugan. I also have to learn more about humbling myself. Thanks!

Ey bro,

I agree with mikzimous and chernandez1. A good talk will go a very long way. Let me just add something. Try mo i-apply to: Kiss-Kick-Kiss.

It's a format which works for me in encouraging younger musicians to play better. Basically, encourage mo siya with a positive about his playing. Make sure to cite particular examples to show that you actually are listening. Then show him what can be improved. Then encourage him again either by reinforcing what you said first or by giving him something to look forward to.

I've been using this to "musically disciple" some of our younger musicians and singers to great results.

Example:
(Kiss part) Bro, nice playing today! Ganda nung solo mo dun sa "I Belong to You" tapos swak na swak yung sa "So Good".
(Kick part) Let me just point some stuff out na pwede pa nating i-improve. First off, dun sa "10,000 Reasons" medyo off mag shred dun sa instrumental part natin. Mas ok sana kung kaya nating i-reinforce yung melody. Tapos dun sa verse ng "I Belong to You" pwede kang hindi muna tumugtog.
(Kiss part again) Again bro, I love the way you play! The way you worship is encouraging and I can see you as someone other people can emulate.

Had this conversation with one of our younger guitar players before. Di ko lang maalala yung exact songs at yung mga details but you get the idea. He's honestly a better guitar player than me, medyo kailangan lang i-tame yung crazy guitarist side of him and let the worshipper come through. Now, he's one of our worship leaders in the main church and a worship team head/trainer in one of our daughter churches. He's also become one heck of a guitar player (though I still talk to him about the amount of gain he uses).

Remember, discipline out of love. Walang natalo sa nagmahal. :)

Hope this helps
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
