Self study din, did a lot of covers, tried writing original material (not that easy), didn't buy books but borrowed, copied & downloaded materials & tutorials, on & off on drumming so I'm on a slow (very slow) progress... Would enroll to formal lessons if I had the time and especially cash...

I see a trend here. Majority ng mga tao dito ay self-taught. Including me.
-

No formal lessons/study, puro non formal :-P :-P
-
Nope. Wala akong formal training/classes or lesson. Self-study pero hanggang ngayon hindi ko pa rin kabisado ang mga scales and modes simply because hirap talaga ako memorization. Wala nga akong matutunan sa mga instructional videos ni John Petrucci and other artists eh.
-
wala din. self-taught.
-
-
i was educated by jingle magazine's chord chart. :)
-
Aral, yes. Fomally, no.

Hindi aral. Mahilig lang talaga kumanta. I have a feeling na ako yung parang william hung and all those people sa AI na minotivate ng family and friends na magaling sila kumanta, and it turns out na hindi naman. But, I wanted to prove something... prove as in I wanna discover it myself :-D
-
-
i was educated by jingle magazine's chord chart. :)
+1
me too!
actually bloodline nmin music, but ako lang ang hnd ngtraining or pumasok sa music school. i can read notes a little bit, pero more on OIDO ako.
-
never had formal training/studies.
"had" this big theory book at home for a while, scanned it for some time, until i could finally turn the pages without passing out. learned a quite a lot from that book. now i can't find the damn thing.
there are also teachers in youtube. which i think is great.
if you can search for their channel's, look for justinguitar and creativeguitarstudios.
they have like weekly to semi monthly uploads
-
Not formally but, my grand father was musically trained when he was in the army,he taught me some theory and that somehow kick started everything.
-
Aral.. Laking tulong at ginhawa..
YET. haha

you're a makeup artist?
-
blues player ako eh i need girls. kaw naman.. metalhead ka no?
-
Just kidding dude,I was just confused with how you learn something from eyes and lips aside from doing makeups.
-
Ako self study/taught lang din, nagstart sa songhits (I remember may kantang "otso-otso" dun sa songhits  ) then may binigay pinsan ko mga scale, finger exercises etc. ung may nakalagay na watermark na "Fade to Black Music" tapos inestafa ng klasmeyt ko dati. :-(
-
Yung mga self taught magaling kumapa ng song just by ear. Agree?
-
Just kidding dude,I'm was just confused with how you learn something from eyes and lips aside from doing makeups.
hehehe :-)
lahat naman tayo dito ginaganahan mag solo and mag rock out for the chicks.
hehehe
or for the love ones.
feeling ko lang ha..lahat tayo may ganung side..chicks and guitars parang mashed potatoes and gravy sila. :) Rainy Season and Spicy Seafood Mami. etc. (well point of view ko lang yun)
-
Yung mga self taught magaling kumapa ng song just by ear. Agree?
exactly. ung mga aral they need music scores ng particular song.
ung natugtog sa singing Bee, SOP, ASAP, etc. yon mga nka music score sila. mga nag aral. kaya khit ano ilatag mo na kanta saglit lang sa knila, pero tayo we need hours to get the chord patterns and riffs ng song by listening.
opinion lang din. not sure about it. pero when i see my uncle reading notes nung nsa orchestra pa sya, minutes lang buo nya na ung part nya
-
self taught musician here as well.
AS much as I am proud of being a self taught musician, I still feel na yung mga formally trained ang may advantage. :| i wish i took lessons... </3

practice is the key to everything.
No one taught me to use chords, and now im verse at it. especially sa pag iimprovise.

As much as possible lang naman sana meron, to maximize the time being used sa rehearsals.
self taught musician here as well.

"It's never too late to learn everything."

Practice and dedication is the key..

Common misconception lang siguro sa notation eh yung sinasabi nila yung mga aral nang notation bigyan mo nang music sheet at on the spot matutugtog nya yun, honestly hindi pa ko nakarinig nang sight-reader na naperfect yung sheet on the spot, despite the fact that you can clearly see the flow of notes on the sheet nakakaduling pa rin specially if the score was well ruled out(mas nadadalian ako sa handwritten scores) which is a really a pain if you have to do it live. A good foundation on theory and a highly trained ear is really essential to make sight reading a breeze, even the most well-versed musicians still need ample time to fully get hold of a piece out from the sheets. Practicing before the performance is still really a key in perfecting a piece, sheets are merely guides to those who have it,and its always a matter of expanding your repertoire that makes you look like an "on-the-spot" player(yung kunwari di alam para astig). IMO the only difference here is the credibility of the player, a lot will be more aligned to a conservatory geek over a pub scene guitar virtouso, but from a fellow musician's view we'd rather exchange chops and learn stuff from seasoned pub players because we know they are battle hardened and time tested. Learning music really is a matter of eagerness and dedication.

Well the advantage of sight readers is how they manage to fake it without messing it up.hehe
That's one thing I've noticed except lang if they are reading a piece of a classical music which is specific. One thing I've noticed sa mga informally trained fellows is they have a good ear but when communicating with other peeps like the formally trained one, they don't know the terms.
I know people who can really sight read on the spot, but it took a lot of practice as well.
It depends on the instrument also.
I salute the senyor of the scene formally or informally trained, for me it's about experience and making the music feel good, make it swing or whatever it is. You should have heart for this as well, not just reading or playing music technically. Like blues it takes a big deal of feel to it,it's not inborn, hehe. It's not about where did you study or who taught you or you a have a long line of experience.
Anyway aral ako,one advantage is studying books on my own but experience still brings a big factor on your playing.
-
self taught --> aral pa rin yan diba?
-
^- mismo, It's like the " tunay na blusero..blah..blah..blah" thread all over again.
-

yan nanaman tayo teptep! =)))

-
May punto si fretboard! :-D Dameng ganyan na self taught.
Baka kailangan iba yung pag construct ng tanong.. Let's say, "Formally trained ka ba to play music o Self taught?" :-D
-
-

Had a few basic piano lessons when I was a kid. When I switched to guitar, everything was self learned; applying what I've learned in piano.
Ngayon balik piano ulit (after 12 years) ako nag se-self learn, applying what I've mastered in guitar (theory and etc.)

Is it true that if you first learn piano it would be easier to learn other instruments?
-
Is it true that if you first learn piano it would be easier to learn other instruments?
-
Self taight ako.
Mabilis ako natuto kase medyo marunong ako mag piano.
I wish nagaral ako dati kaso walang pera dati
Ngayon naman i feel old to take up formal lessons and mahirap na baguhin ang nakasanayan kong method of playing
-
Is it true that if you first learn piano it would be easier to learn other instruments?
For me YES kasi andun na lahat yung Bass, Rhythm, and Lead.
It has a huge impact (kahit basic lang pinag-aralan ko) on my playing and composition.
Pero depende parin sa tao yan.
-

sabagay to learn piano you must have formal ed. so you'll know the theories easily

ah i see...
so dyan na pumapasok ung talent part ng tao
-

Yes it's true. Pinaka-basic bukod pa sa Acoustic guitar. Maganda lang sa Acoustic, you can practice or learn anywhere.

Yup very handy and marami tutorial sa youtube about guitars compared to pianos..

Same thoughts here sir! Sabay takbo muna before or after blues lessons.. Hahaha!
-
-
Dominantly self taught. :-D
I first learned guitar from my young uncle, he taught me Chords A and G. Then I found a chord book at my house, studied the basics of it. Then I learned to read tablature from websites learning to do the solos note by note. After that, I learned basics of music theory from another uncle of mine, he taught me Major and Minor Pentatonic scales. After that, since we only get to see 5-10 times a year I studied on my own, watching videos on youtube, practicing my ears, and reading some music eBooks that I have!
-
Self-Taught
-
Sariling Sikap
-
blues player ako eh i need girls. kaw naman.. metalhead ka no?
-
I didn't study music formally, but I took lessons on music theory from my uncle. Only the basics tho, Major and Minor scale, Pentatonic, constructing a guitar solo, and some techniques! hehe :-D
Currently, I've been reading books, right now I'm reading Modal Magic by Frank Gambale. hehe
Other lessons I just looked up on the net, watched videos on youtube, and downloaded some instructionional videos on the net hehe :-D
-
-
mas ok padin sakin both.
pero pinaka the best is ung my oras ka talaga sa pag eensayo at pag aaral sa sarili at mag aral ng bago. lagi mong iisipin na mas may magaling pa sayo kahit super galing mo na sa tingin mo.
-
Astig talaga as in.
Amputa ngayon? Kaya ko makapagbilang ng 9/8, 13/16 7/8 atbp. Sa Youtube at metronome ko lang natutunan. Pero siyempre kung mabibigyan ako ng chance to enhance this skill go ako.

-
Marami talagang feeling magaling dito sa atin. Fame kasi labanan eh. Pero pag pinatugtog mo king ina magaling pa yung tinuruan mo kesa kanya. Payabangan at Pakupalan
-
