Hi Everyone,
Last May 2009, my father, Emmanuel Y. Tiongzon, came down with a fever accompanied by flu-like symptoms. The day after the initial bout with fever, he complained that he could not hear anything anymore. We rushed him to the hospital upon our doctor’s advice, and he was confined for 9 days at the National Kidney Institute. The diagnosis was that my father contracted a viral infection that affected his auditory nerves, possibly due to his body’s immune system fighting the strength of the infection. After he was discharged from the hospital, we brought him to an ear clinic to have his hearing evaluated through an audiometry. His test results confirmed that he has total hearing loss. Apart from the hearing loss, my father is also suffering from Tinnitus, a medical condition where he “hears” a mix of non-stop buzzing, cracking, exploding sounds inside his head. Since the noise happens 24/7, his condition has brought about severe bouts of insomnia and depression.
We have approached several ear specialists and they recommended a Cochlear Implant, a procedure where an electronic device will be surgically inserted behind the ear and attached to the cochlea. Our consultant, Dr. Charlotte Chiong, is one of the few specialists who perform this procedure here in the Philippines. We have met up with the supplier of the implant and they have provided us with the price quotation of the entire procedure. The cochlear implant costs around PhP 950,000, which covers the cost of the implant and doctors’ professional fees (exclusive of hospital confinement and medicine expenses). This is a very steep price given that both my parents are retirees, and the combined incomes of my siblings and I are not enough. As advised by the implant’s supplier, we just need to have half the amount of the implant’s cost paid for the operation to proceed. The balance can be settled via installment over a 2-year period.
We have requested for financial assistance from the PCSO, but our application was denied. They informed us that all financial assistance requests for implants will not be entertained currently due to budget cancellation.
With this, my family is seeking your support for our project to raise funds for my dad’s operation. We are currently selling tickets for a raffle scheduled on December 15, 2010. Each raffle ticket is priced at PhP 50.00, a raffle booklet contains 10 tickets. Raffle prizes are a cellphone, a dvd player, a sack of rice and a few consolation prizes.
If you have family or friends who may wish to help our cause, feel free to inform them or forward this letter to them. I may be reached at 0917-8117666, at

In behalf of the Tiongzon Family, I would like to thank you in advance for the assistance you will be extending to us. We greatly appreciate the help. May God always bless you.
Regards,Jerome Tiongzon
