i also have a EC reverse dot head on my 14" snare drum.. ok naman ung tunog pero for me, i think mas bagay sya for wood snares.. i tune it high and still gives a nice sound.. many pro drummers are using that head also.. greetings from cebu kapatid!! :)

Mga Sir ano kaya magandang tuning sa GRESTCH RENOWN MAPLE 14 x 6.5?I'm using Aquarian Hi-Energy(Batter side) and Evans hazy 300 (Reso side).Yun Phat crack or mas magandang crack niya na mapro produce...Thanks.. :-D

Ok ang Hazy 300 as reso pero mas maganda kung Ambassador Snare Side... medium tight on the batter, tight on the reso tapos, wag masyadong tight yung snare wires... also consider the stick, 5A plastic tip, gives you fatness but lots of ring so consider putting moongel or anything na makakapag- muffle...

Currently using an Evans EC1 Reverse Dot. And I'm satisfied.

pwede pero konti lang... loosen up your batter head...

yung "tonk" sound kasi is produced if you have a tightly tuned batter head... especially for a steel snare or snare na mababaw and height...

Good pm sir. Salamat sir!!! :)

Hmmm. Ganto nalang sir. Yung 14x5.5 sana pang all around. Or mag stay nalang ako Remo ambassadors sa snare?
Ayoko sana yung G2 coated kasi 2-ply. Stick to 1 ply parin siguro ako. Hehe!!  :-D

yung 14 x 5.5, siguro try mo mag REMO Controlled Sound Reverse Dot. single ply siya, pero makapal sa gitna for less overtones and more focused attack.

Yung 12 x 7, stick with the ambassadors bro. can't go wrong with that. :)

Hehehe

alam ko ayaw mo ng double ply, but... Evans Onyx for the 14x5.5 :-D

How about EC Reverse Dot(2-ply) or EC1 Reverse Dot(1-ply) over Hazy 300?

Pag mas makapal yes usually mas focused yung sound plus less overtones. but always remember na a thick head can sound dead lalo na in big venues except pag mic-ed ang snare mo. so weigh your options.

IMHO, 2ply plus reverse dot it already over kill. 1 ply coated with Reverse Dot nalang para you get the best of both worlds.

Moongels if applied to heavily can easily kill the snare's "oomph" factor. nawawalan ng dating yung tunog ng snare pag masyadong pinatay ang overtones by moongel. better to get a head with lesser overtones.

EC1 reverse dot na coated or Remo CS na reverse dot would be great options here.

2 cents lang naman :)

sir word of caution lang...and i agree with sir ralph, it may sound as you described (sobrang overtone) at the drummer's point of hearing, but that sound may be perfectly fine sa side ng audience...a tad more of mufling may produce a dead sound sa audience...an evans genera dry/hd dry may sound fine without moongels...on the other hand, the thicker batter heads were introduced including those with reinforced centers, if i'm not mistaken, for heavy hitters/players because they're more durable...

Here here. i learned this the hard way when I played live in a stage. my snare had too much overtone on the drivers seat so I muffled it with moongels. when I heard the soundclips and videos of the gig, sobrang dead nung snare ko. nwala yung crisp, nawala yung attack. so, better judge from an audience point of view

Thicker/two ply heads usually means more focused sound and less overtones, however katulad ng sabi ni Ralph, sa audience POV mas dead sya kaysa sa naririnig mo.

I suggest getting the EC1 Reverse Dot or the Genera Dry, maybe even a Remo Ebony Ambassador as single ply options. Enough dampening to reduce overtones but less likely to kill your sound  because they're still fairly open. For two ply options, never go for dampened heads: Evans G2 Coated/Remo Coated Emperors are already very good and pretty popular choices. If you want a fat sound, I wouldn't go further than Evans Onyx or Remo Ebony Emperors. I have Evans Blue Hydraulics on my snare and while it still has overtones audible on at the driver's seat, it's waaaaaaaaaay dead to the audience (molasses

If you want to have an idea of how it might sound to the audience without leaving the kit, try wearing some ear protection and play the kit. I have Mack's Ear Plugs (P750 at True Value, pretty good investment!), and it translates the sound pretty well; but normal carpenter's earmuffs will do (P150-300 lang yan). Play the snare wearing them, that's probably how the audience hears it. "Less" overtones perceived.

If you want to control the openness of its sound a bit, Genera Dry must do the action.. A controlled snare drum sound without applying moon gels or mufflers.. It has a built in muffler underneath the head that doesn't show visibly.. It also has tiny holes for a bit dryness.. Actually its pretty much for any genres.. I highly recommend Genera Dry.. I never tried and wasted money anymore finding my preferred sound when I have experienced this already..  :-D

sir jviado share ko lang yung advise ni sir musicianurse28 sa evans drumheads thread when i was in the same situation before (i see that you've posted there also)...i was consulting about the right head for a 14-inch maple snare with flanged hoops...i took his advise and i'm happy ever since : )...i hope you find the batter/snare head combination you're looking for...

Mukhang EC1 siguro or Genera Dry over Hazy 300. Laging miced yung snare (Top and Bottom). Ano ba pinagkaiba ng Remo Ambassador sa EC1 Reverse Dot or EC Reverse Dot? I'm happy with my 12x7(Ambassador(Batter), Ambassador Hazy(Reso)). :)

Sir naka die-cast hoops ako up and down sa 14x5.5 ko eh. Hehe. Oo sir nag post rin ako. Kayo sir? Ano ba gamit niyong batter/reso sa snare niyo? :-D nagpalit kasi ako heads ng toms ko from Remo to Evans so i'm thinking of changing my Snare heads to Evans na rin. Play safe nalang ako and stay with Remo Ambassadors on my snares.   :)
