Tuned very high, usually used as an aux/effects snare.

Snare Drums, what shell do you prefer?
« Reply #435 on: October 25, 2012, 12:43:37 AM »
We all know that drums has various shells. May it be Birch, Maple, Mahogany, Brass, Acrylic to name a few. Drums nowadays has different kinds of woods or steel shells. As for your snare drum, what shell do you prefer?

I have an Acrylic snare 14''x6''. It's my workhorse and I really like the sound it produces. It's so loud that is good for live, outdoor, and big venues situations. My only problem is the indoor settings, I'm having a hard time controlling it's natural sound and volume.

Snare Drum Trivia (Please correct me if I'm wrong. reference is Pearl Drums)
Birch - are known to be bright and drummer's choice in recording
Maple - are the most common. the best of both worlds. bright or warm, it has it.
Mahogany - are known to be warm sounding shells.

What else? I don't know the character of the steel, brass, aluminum, carbon fiber (yes, carbon fiber. pork pie has it), ash, beech, cherry, oak, hickory, zebra wood, and so on (I haven't tried any of these shells yet). Maybe you could help me figure out their uniqueness.. Thanks!

Remo Coated Ambassador or Evans G1 Coated on batter head with Medium Tight to Tight tuning.. That will do the trick :) That is according to Vic Mercado himself :-D

Minsan may moongel minsan wala..

judging from your music preferences, you may want to have a snare drum that will cut through the music and has added punch, in this case a birch snare drum, like a tama superstar, may fit you.
