Melodic Hardcore or Pop Punk?
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:38:33 AM »
Hey guys I'm an amateur musician still a highschool student..
Wanna ask for your opinions which genre is better
I'm the composer of our band and I've been having a hard time choosing which
Genre to use when composing.. I've made a lot of songs.. and most of them are pop punk and the rest are yeah (melodic hardcore based).. (all english songs)
But since our band is based here in Philippines where music is more appreciated when its heavier
I'm thinking of switching to melodic hardcore.. if only we're on states where pop punk is appreciated by teenagers. haha.
Our recording is about to start.. I'm still thinking which set of songs to use..
please help me? and yes! I'm also asking for your side! if you play this genre and please RESPECT my post I'm just an amateur I'm not yet a pro like you guys
btw
I'm influenced by: Four Year Strong, All Time Low, Blink 182, Urbandub, Kamikazee haha.

more power to philmusic!

Melodic hardcore = GASGAS
Pop-punk = NOT PUNK

Young man I suggest you LISTEN TO THE CLASSICS of your chosen genre. Blink 182 is NOT A CLASSIC BAND, you want real punk? SEX PISTOLS. THE CLASH. THE RAMONES.

You want real hardcore? BLACK FLAG. MINOR THREAT.

Pag napakinggan mo sila mapoposeran ka na sa All Time Low mo. Magiging ALL TIME LOW NA SILA SA LIST OF PEBURIT BANDS. But thats just me, what do I know Im just a grandpa compared to you, mas matanda pa ako kay Frances Bean Cobain. (Thats Kurt's daughter in case deins mo alam.)

yung kanta ng Coheed and Cambria na Welcome Home...
Anu ba yun?

Parang punk yung band na yun pero linagyan nila ng orchestral kaya it it is very melodic...

nakakapangilabot... pero ganda...

Coheed and Cambria is "progressive" hindi sya pop punk

anyways back to topic..

kung punk talaga go for the "sex pistols" "clash" minor threat" fugazi" Dead kennedys  kung medyo pop eh ramones! ayun!

Listen to the roots,  and enjoy it! magiging natural na sayo kung anung subgenre ng punk ang gusto mo kung open ka to listening, kesa ipwersa mo ang sarili to a certain genre..

listen to new found glory and the starting line. mga ok na pop punk. stay away with that all time low.

ok din yung tipo na a day to remember kaso hindi bagay dito sa pinas.

dagdag ko lang new found glory isa sa mga malaking influence ng kamikazee nung nagsisimula pa lang sila.

FINE BY ME.

I CHOO-CHOO-CHOOSE Hilera any day over all those soundalike POP PUNK and MELODIC HARDCORE local bands.

Pero agree ako pre, definitely STAY AWAY FROM ALL TIME LOW.

ika nga ng man over board, defend pop punk

The Wonder Years revived pop punk. Somehow, I think, they are responsible for killing easycore.

Man Overboard and Transit don't sound as "pop-punk" as The Wonder Years and The Story So Far do, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, TS, if you truly enjoy pop punk and melodic hardcore, why not blend them, as others had suggested? Listen to A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, Set Your Goals and Title Fight. Actually, there are hundreds of melodic hardcore-influenced pop punk bands out there you can listen to.

I guess that's for you to decide man. The Story So Far plays pop punk with the melodic hardcore edge. No Trigger plays Melodic Hardcore with a bit of the pop. Whichever resonates more. Title Fight, Tiefighter, Worthwhile and Such Gold seem to float between the two also. Why not play both? Don't worry about the people who'll appreciate your band. Whichever sounds best for you. Either way both genres aren't really that popular here (granted we're talking about good pop punk).

The current wave of pop punk bands are really good. Transit (which has that midwest emo - influenced sound) and then The Wonder Years are really bringing it out up to front.

If you go melodic hardcore, you gotta try all of Dan Yemin's bands. Kid Dynamite, Lifetime, Paint It Black and Armalite. Kid Dynamite's particularly reminiscent of Black Flag somehow. Also check out Have Heart, Strike Anywhere, Defeater and Worthwhile.

If you go pop punk, aside from the bands listed above, you have to check out the early 2000 era Drive - Thru / Rushmore records. It also helps to start with the Ramones. Let's face it, they're Pop Punk. Haha

I guess listening to those bands will make it easier for you to decide what you want to do. Again worry about what you think sounds best for you, not what people think is popular or for what age group.

@ Sneaky Bastard - Bill Stevenson has been producing pop punk bands (The Swellers, Broadway Calls, Useless ID, MxPx, etc.) for awhile now. If I'm not mistaken he was one of the drummers of Black Flag right? I didn't realize that being a close minded individual was being punk. I'm also older than Frances Bean. Does that make me cool now? Let the kid listen to whatever he wants without insulting him. He started this thread to learn.

@ Francis - I really wanna cover Lifetime. Ebong of Legarda wanted to play some Shook Ones stuff. We should jam!

Don't tempt me. I've been wanting to start a loud band for a long time but all I get in my head is ideas for a noise/drone band. :))

i only know the main genres where these subs came from. hardcore and punk.

with that said, since bata ka pa, you may not find amusement in listening to the old school recommendations. go for what people were listening to in the 90's(or late 90's). id choose rancid because they made my 90's sound fun and madball or hatebreed for something with a punch.

teka, san nga ba mag fall ang From Autumn to Ashes? sila na ba yung part ng post hardcore movement? i like the fusion they got there.
