Dilemma on Gretsch Drums, Urgent Help
« Reply #6 on: December 03, 2006, 11:15:28 PM »
Hi.
I just sold my pearl forum series and I bought the gretsch ash series yestersday. Napa impulsive buying ata ako.. hehehe... anyway, heres my dilemma..

the unit will be delivered tomorrow and i was thinking if i should change my order and go for the gretsch maple series instead... worth it ba yun? would there be noticeable difference in terms of performance or quality wise???

additional 6 thou if i should go for the maples.... balak ko sana ipunin nalang para sa cymbals... urgent help!!

salamat ng marami:)

if that 6k diff is still avail to you, i'd say go for maple. i could sense now palang you're experiencing purchase dissonance, which could turn into regret later on. instead of bearing with the 'what if' later on (what if binili ko yung maple? and other what ifs etc), get the better one of the 2 now pa lang.

most drummers are after maple, im not saying you should too but you see majority clamour for it is an indication of something rin naman.

now if you will ask me and if i were really in your situation, bangbus will go for catalina maple!

maybe you can put it this way (this is how i personally see it):

honda civic 1.8 plus may extra cash for bling bling 20inch mags = catalina ash
honda civic 2.0 sport&power complete! = catalina maple

dun na ako sa higher end of the spectrum and chaka ko na proproblemahin yung ibang kailangan, at least i have the better model to begin with.

pero its just me, you might have a different outlook. pero bukas na yan. you have to decide asap bago i-karga sa delivery van yan. otherwise, baka they wont take it back.

asd is good. if you are a beginning drummer you might not even be able to distinguish the difference in sound between ash and maple. the only noticeable diff between the two that will matter to you right now is the sizes. ash has an 8" tom while the maple has an extra 16" floor tom. its just a question of what you like : bigger or smaller toms?

If you can distinguish the difference, why not? Pero kung ako sa 'yo, the best cymbals muna ang iskorin ko.Isang crash, isang ride, pair of hats, at isang splash...samahan mo na din ng china!
Kahit yung snare at bass lang muna ang palitan mo ng skin.

wala atang kasamang free tom yung mga catalina birch so IMO no, its not worth it  :-D sound wise, yeah it kicks butt

catalina ash or catalina maple ang sulit both in sound and price point.

look at the section Maple, Birch and Lauan

http://www.drumdojo.com/tech/shelldesign.htm

but these are generalizations...

these descriptions will vary depending on what drumhead you will use, tuning and room you will be playing at so try not to be caught up with the wood stereotypes. even drummers wouldnt know the sound of maple and birch when you playback a recording

the only reason i posted this is because i currently have acrylic shells and slapped aquarian heads on them and heck if i even "hear" any acrylic on it. i wouldnt even know that its not a wood drum if i didnt have prior knowledge or see it being played

if it sounds good its good

Yan ba yung 7.1k sa JB? (6000 flat with discount hehe)

I have the exact snare. Sabi ng JB, maple daw. Pero I think it's only partly maple with an inner-ply of a different wood. Sobrang wala akong makitang information nito sa net. I think you're referring to the Gretsch Blackhawk na piccolo. (wala nang Nighthawk, methinks) I like it though. It's got plenty of volume, and minimal overtones even with the stock Evans Genera G1 batter. It's lacks a fat sound though, so I guess it's good for rock, punk, and the like. (Which is good since we play metal)

Good snare out of the box! I resorted to this since wala nang stock ang kahit anong JB ng Sonor Force 3005 snare (JB Cebu lang daw) and I kinda needed a snare on a budget.

Here are some pics of my snare in natural maple finish.

Shameless plug for our band featuring the said Gretsch snare!

yup outerply lang ang maple for finishing reasons pero yung shell e yung ordinary plywood lang. but dont be discouraged, if it sounds great then its worth what you paid for  :-D

Haha, PLYWOOD? Sabi na eh, the inner ply woodgrain looked familiar. Oh well, I guess I got what I paid for. At least I'm satisfied. (Kase siguro di pa ako nakakatikim ng Jordison, Hakim, Supraphonic, Radio King, etc na snares kaya mababaw pa kaligayahan ko. For me, it was already a giant leap from my old fernando piccolo hehehe.)
