Dingricon,

not all selmer saxes are alike, based on experience....kahit na VI pa...pero i think mas ok ang 62II ko doon sa vii na yon, stuffy and tunog...not open, although it plays easy top to bottom...pero you can feel it when you compare it to 3-5 horns side by side.......forget to tell that i also suspecting that vii was relacquered, done in factory...so beware of some relacquered horns...

.......from my experience !tama ka dyan dalandan !....korek!!!  :-D :-D :-D
basta decent...need not be brand new...as long as it plays easy top to bottom...no leaks and the most important -  in tune !..remember the Fernando brand in the 90's?...matigas ang ulo ng isang student ko...gusto bago, makintab, ayaw makinig...to cut the story short, ....instead of buying the king super 20...ayon ....alam nyo na...ang pagsisi ay sa huli .. :x :x

sir dingricon,

ayun nga po. but i had a fernando din po. and it plays okay naman. :)

i love playing my sax. hirap lang kasi maingay magpractice. hehehe.

anyway, extra info sa mga gusto bumili ng sax: buy something you will love to play. it goes along with the price and quality yung feeling mo na GUSTO mong tinutugtog ang instrumento.

a sax is NOT an instrument that will yield immediate results. it takes years of practice to get good tone. ako 6 years na, sa tingin ko hindi ako magaling by any means. i can read notes and play some tunes pero yung feel ko sa sax mejo kulang pa. sana makatulong ako sa mga budding saxy people. :D

Dalandan,

I heard, Fernando (JB brand) improved a lot...my experience is on the 90's...isa pa noon ang Musicmate..siguro ok na rin ito ngayon.. I tried a lot of copies from China (Topsax,Legend,Toulour etc..)and some are better than Taiwan Made...yong iba naman, wow ! grabe !..puede nang pabigat sa bangka.....nasa factory din kasi yan!...One brand i tried from the PHilippines is the Regal, galing Lyric Music.. ok naman..anyway, sa mga nais mag aral..lao na may forum na tayo.. sugod na!.. we're here to help ......

Just been to Mang Pany's house in Blumentrit. He got several of vintage alto sax for sale, looking for a tenor sax din kasi pero wala daw siyang tenor ngayon.

You may want to check Mang Pany's alto saxes. His CP# 09185220550.

Mga kapamilya at kapuso....naks.   I suggest never have your sax replated. Please note that the value ng replated instrument goes down.

Most pro players doesn't care about the look, pero yung tunog ang hinahanap. Tots Tolentino alto selmer niya is kupas na kupas. Nakaka in love... yung sax ha, hohoho. Sarap pakingan.

curious nabasa ko sa website that you have to start using an alto sax and not a tenor sax bakit mas mahirap ba matutunan tenor?

i remember in the eighties nineties wasn't there an eddie k who was into saxophone? tama ba name?
Title: Re: For Saxy People Only. (Saxophone Player's Thread)
Post by: dingricon on September 16, 2008, 03:00:07 AM
you can start on either alto or tenor.....but not on soprano & baritone...
The alto sax  is highly recommended if you can't carry the tenor (mostly applicable for kids in marching bands..)

Gook luck Bro !

Life is too short bro   kung san ka masaya don ka. . .hehehe. . .

. pero it needs a lot of air  :-)

I'm still a newbie. . . kaya ayon . .concentrate ako sa tenor. . . hehehe. .

napadpad ako sa thread na ito kasi i was browsing for a pocket saxophone (ung xaphoon)...anyway, gusto rin matuto eh.ang sarap ng dating ng tunog and i also love jazz music pero ung tipong mga standards lang(so far). i have yet to explore other types of the genre or perhaps listen to some other musicians din. pero gusto ko talaga matuto kasi tatay ko tsaka 2 uncles ko eh dating drum and bugle corps members(THE 27th LANCER), french horn gamit nila, eh pareho lang din daw ng principle.hehe, yun lang! sana may mga advices akong mapulot from u mga SAXY PEOPLE. maraming salamat!  :-)

rock all the saxy people! uhmm. I play sax for almost 8 years, and then nagstop for 3 years and at this time pinagpatuloy ko ang pagtugtog ko.

I just want to ask if somebody has a book or sheets of Kenny G., especially Silhouette, and somebody who can share some places, where can I find and buy the book.

Thanks..

BTW, anu pala kaibahan ng vintage sa brand new?

brand new -bago !
vintage -luma!   :-D :-D :-D

i prefer the newer model, mas madaling tipaan.. esp. the high keys (D,Eb, F),ang problema sa vintage (most of them)..ang g3, low notes key, also kulang na din yong iba ,walang f fork, or alt. Bb..etc..
pero vintage saxes has better tone than d newer ones, most newer saxes, have brighter tone..pero, you can shape your sound or tone using various kind of mouthpieces.(dark, bright ,baffled, etc..) ingat sa old saxes.baka sobrang luma di na maitonu,,esp, pag walang L (low tone) na tatak.. di mo maitotono sa 440......ano pa ba? email mo na lang ako if got specific question...cge,!

anong model yan?
1910 is a patent date.
Serial number?,
Low pitch?
original plating or relacquered ?
original case, mouthpiece?..condition?
soldered parts etc..
Are higher keys adjusted ? esp. high D, Eb, E...
condition of pads? -new, old, good ,very good, some replaced , etc...
dings, dents?
pictures?...
these are just some of the important  things to consider to determine the value!

Btw, nagstart muna akong mag-gitara (16 years na akong nag-gigitara..on/off ) ...

kung may banda malapit sa inyo (big band), normally, if you're really interested, they will teach you for free, and even let you use their instrument for free, ang trade-in lang is once na matuto ka na, sa kanila ka sasamang banda at hindi sa kalaban nila... pwede ka sumama sa iba as long as walang engagement ang banda nila.

mga sir help me may tanong ako which is better ang sound, silver or gold plated sax? or does it have any difference in tones.

mga sir help me may tanong ako which is better ang sound, silver or gold plated sax? or does it have any difference in tones.
..better sound or tone? ..it depends on the player...
They said silver plated saxophones has a brighter tone.. but on my experience, it's not always true...lots of factors to be considered...one is the mouthpiece , baffled mouthpieces produced brighter tone...also the reed... personally i like the v16 vandoren when playing with rock band,combo.....
...bihira na ang gold plated ngayon ..most of the "gold" saxophones are (gold) lacquered & not plated..
Btw, anong brand ng mouthpiece ang kasama sa sax mo?.. for beginner , i personally recommoend plastic/ebonite mouthpiece which is easier to control....join the SAX society of the Phils..i 'm sure you will learn a lot from our maestros there.. and our fellow forum member Vince Lahorra is there too..i'm sure he will help you. ..

If we talk about sound it is very important that your instrument whether it be gold plated or silver is not relacquered. Also in my experience, an instrument that was played over time will produce a more robust and better sound than an instrument kept and played only a few times.

thanks alot for your comments sir.

why not try softer reeds like size 2 before buying another piece? ..
i think bari mouthpieces are better than yami 4c...we'll ..4c mpcs are for beginners...hmmm..pag may nakita ka at mura..ok na rin .just keep your bari pag naupgrade ka..
forgot to tell you... most saxophones built with ribbed construction produced darker tone than those w/o ..and saxophone that has pads with metal resonators plays brighter...

Hello, im new here... natuwa ako when i saw this forum and thread. I thought i was alone:)

Anyway, ive been playing for more then 10yrs now, but i never pursued music professionaly, thus i consider myself a newbie.  I have an Beusher Aristocrat200, A Con 21M and a Selmer Aristocrat AS600.  All Alto Saxophones.    I play occasionaly with bands focused in JAZZ, POP and 70's music, saka tumutugtog rin ako during regular services in church:)

I learned alot from back reading here.  Dami Pala SAXY players out there!:) mabuhay ang mga REEDS ng pilipinas:)

BTW, is there a specific thread where i can sell one of my saxophones?

Currently looking for a nice sounding sax for beginners.
And hopefully senior saxophonists we have here could guide us newbies on our way to being the great saxophonists ever! Hahaha! ;)

Anybody, who'd like to give materials in studying sax? Or could refer VERY GOOD instructors for sax.
Thanks!

Just a piece of advice from an amateur sax player. Don't delay your plan, start now! There is no hard and fast rule on what sax to start with. although most players pick up alto for a start. Select a good quality Taiwanese made sax if you cannot afford to buy any of the big 4: Selmer Paris, Keilweirth, Yamaha or Yanagisawa. I made the mistake of buying a cheap Chinese made sax (Parrot) and after one year of playing, I junked it for a Conn 24M. Later I bought a Yamaha YAS 82Z which is now my main sax.

btw, i i sent  3 alto saxophones and will be in Bulacan  in September (via LBC seacargo).. let me know.. 1 is a Yamaha Japan yas23, Conn 20m, 1 vito needs repair) 2 sopranos (LA SAX & a very nice Winston 368GL in mint condition)....If want to reserve let me know and i'll contact my friend..

I have been playing alto for about 6 years as an amateur. I started with a Parrot which I used for 1 year then junked it. I then bought a Conn 24M alto, a good sax with good intonation and a big volume sound though wanting in aesthetics. About 2 years ago, I got a Yamaha YAS 82Z Custom, a very free blowing sax that needs less air stream to sound a note. Recently, I purchased an LC  601 curved soprano (Taiwan made).

By the way last Saturday, I watched the concert of Euimir Deodato at the SMX Convention Hall. He was backed up by an all Pinoy musicians, well known in their respective fields but I will mention here specifically the horn section: Romy Maiquez (not sure if I heard his surname correctly) on the trombone, Romy Francisco on the trumpet and the Flugel horn, Michael Guevarra on the alto sax and flute and Gilbert______( did not hear his surname) on the baritone sax and flute. Ang sound nila exact copy ng original songs heard on CDs of Deodato.

You may try Salonga Music Store in Araneta Center. Dati may nakita ako sa kanila na Selmer Omega or Aristocrat na Taiwanese made. Ang price ay Php42K. I am not sure if that sax is still available.

It's a great start for a beginner (like me) to practice more and to be inspire.

It's really hard to beat the tone of the vintage sax compared to the newer one...imo. The downside is, you'll have to consider the ergonomics and honestly, it's harder to blow.  eto cguro ang isa sa dahilan kung bakit may mga estudyante na nagku-quit agad dahil sa mahirap daw matutunan.

I agree. I think YAS 23 would be a good choice as in fact if you have  one of that model, there no more need to buy even the high end Yamaha models except if you are after aesthetics consideration. You just have to contend with the fact that it is difficult to find a YAS 23 at a bargain price because it has a good resale value.

If you have a friend or relative based in, or travelling to Hong Kong, perhaps you can ask him to buy a Jupiter sax from Tom Lee Music. The price of a Jupiter student model would not exceed Php30 thousand

If you have a friend or relative based in, or travelling to Hong Kong, perhaps you can ask him to buy a Jupiter sax from Tom Lee Music. The price of a Jupiter student model would not exceed Php30 thousand
Sir Deyb Kos I read some reviews of Jupiter sax sa other sites.. positive naman dun newer models from 700 up. yung mga 500 pababa ok din kaya.. any info about this sir?

I could not recall the specific model numbers of each Jupiter saxes  but based on the reviews of others, it seems that even their student model is ok just like the YAS 23. My Conn 24M athough a student model has a good intonation, big powerful sound, fair ergonomics although lacking in aesthetics.

hi guys!  i'm new to this forum.  i played the sax 7 years.  i played in our praise & worship in church.
however i stopped for 5 years.  i picked up my sax again last week to play in church.  i had a hard time playing!
you tend to forget the techniques, reading notes, scales (hahahaha!) and riffs.  :-(   need to practice again continuously!
sana meron banda kahit marching band na pwede maki-practice para masanay uli.  i now live in a condo in taguig so mahirap magpractice from there baka magreklamo mga kabitbahay hehehe!  kung meron kayong alam na pwede ako maki-practice lang just PM me.

more power!!!!  :-)

Tanong lang po Saxy peeps. Ever heard of the brand Khon USA? Yung letter o ay yung may two dots right above the letter. I tried Google pero wala e.

Thanks!

Khon USA po siya, hindi K-hon. Weird nga e. I'll ask them take a picture of the logo or the sax itself. Thanks!

Just a piece of advice from an amateur sax player. Don't delay your plan, start now! There is no hard and fast rule on what sax to start with. although most players pick up alto for a start.
Sir tama ka dito.. I followed your advise... eto, sarap pala mag-sax.. hehe  :-D

hi ,,, my name is alex ^_^ im playing the alto sax for a year now, and my sax is only a fernando, but i love the sound of it bec it has a very rich big sound, i dont know if its the effect of the gold plating, but im quite happy with what happened to the sound, i dont know if thats what you think if you tried it, but im quite happy with the sound. When i started playing the sax it turned out that its not hard as it looks like, its very fun and the sound is very relaxing, when i was on my 2nd month of playing it i was heard of my neighbor during my practice session at home, and was asked to play to audition to play ffor a wedding with the band, luckily i was accepted to play, ^_^ so it was cool, im still not that good at that time, bec im just trying to learn some style for adlibs, but it turned out fine and the bride loved it, and i was intorduced to the brides niece's band, and on my 3rd month i started playing in bars in mandaluyong, ^_^ so i was very proud of my skill and the fast result of my practice, even my band members cant believe that i was only a 3month amateur back then, after that i was hired by the mayor of marikina as a member of her personal band (Marithes Carlos Fernando) and unhtil now still enjoying of playing it ^_^ im having troubles now in doing is hitting the altissimo notes accurately especially the G and G#, i squeekwhen i try to hit those notes,, does any have a technique so i can hit altissimo notes at ease and accurately?? ^_^ thnx!!!!!

I just don't know why are some people who would recommend Raon a place to buy horn instruments. Dati po siguro naamaze nila ako dati mura. pero at some point I got enlightened by my mentors and professor. Oo maaring mura at ito lang ang kaya ng budget, pero come to think of it,bakit ka naman bibili ng isang mamahaling bagay na sandali mo lang naman magagamit??na lagi kayong magkikita nila mang panny ng maynila at mang boy ng bulacan (mga instrument technician) dahil magpapaayos kayo ng instrumento nyo. Lagi naman pong pinopost dito sa mga forums ng mga professional sax players or even horn players na malimit ang magandang instrumento sa raon. Pero there are some who still recommend the place.. Budget is one of the most important factor to consider sa pagbili ng sax... pero naman..Intonation should also be consider kasi bat ka naman bibili ng instrumento kung gagawa ka lang ng sarili mong tunog.. Lalabas na magkakaroon ka ng sariling mundo..

educate me po mga master... planning to buy an alto saxophone if i read it right the things i should consider are

body
mouthpiece
reed

hmmm madalas kong mabasa yung conn24m body at yamaha 4c na mouthpiece... trip ko sana yung mga jazz type na sounds more than 10 years into guitar and i've learned other musical instruments na rin po such as keyboard, base, drums and i like the solemnity of the jazz music kaya parang trip ko yung alto sax... any one who can suggest a good starter set?

Hi Guys, newbe sa sax world. Starting on sax by playing an alto about a month ago, traded my carvin guitar with an old yas 61. So far so good naman.
And now GAS is building up again  :-D , been thinking of trying out a tenor.
Hopefully I can learn from the masters here.

pre a yamaha 4c is a good mpc, maybe try different reeds? If you go the mpc route, I heard a lot of good things about the selmer soloist. Try sax on the web forum, search mo lang.
Nag jump to tenor na kasi ako.

Yes the best ang yamaha 4c for beginners. If you need that kind of mpc. try saxophone pawnshop in mandaluyong they usually have stock of Yamaha 4c.
