Zawinul Syndicate is afro-cuban inspired din di ba plus an austrian taste of music that only Joe Zawinul could deliver in jazzfusion context  :)

* a few songs of Weather Report were also afro-cuban inspired.

Yes, during Jaco's stay with Weather Report there were Carribean influences in some if not most of their songs. This was due to Jaco's trips to the beach with his family when he was a kid listening to steel drum players (Actually, more like Trinidad & Tobago influenced because it's the country's signature instrument).

Afro-Cuban music is exciting! Not that many audiences, though. I think Miami Sound Machine has Afro-Cuban influences in their songs, too.  :D

well speaking of steel drums, i think Othello Molineaux is the best...how amazing that he could make the steel pans sing like a piano or a saxophone...hanep talaga!  :D

If you're looking for *the* Afro-Cuban guru in this country, look no further than percussionist Bo Razon and his various groups (Puro Ritmo, etc.). Bo has been to Havana many times to learn direct from the masters. Last I heard he was just in Barcelona playing with Grace Nono and Bob Aves.

Were you referring to the Live in Montreaux DVD? Yep! Hanep talaga! Mataob-taob ako when I heard The Chicken.  :D

I'm quite curious, though: How can a steel pan/drums like that generate so many tones? Does it have marks that say "F#" or "E"? Wala lang.  8)
