Ok ba ang WIFI?
« on: December 22, 2006, 02:11:02 PM »

Anong evaluation nyo sa WIFI?
(I'm planning to go WIFI kc medyo malayo ang kuwarto ko sa tel. line namin. 2.) Also parang mabagal ung connection ko kahit 56 k ung modem ko.)  also nahihirapan akong maka on-line sa philmusic especially pg peak hours.

2.) Anong magandang server para sa WIFI?
-Nag-inquire ako sa globe meron clang 995pp /monthly.   Accdg to them 3x more faster daw ang connection.

(ok ba service nila?

Time is short, let's play music as long as possible.

Smart hasn't called their product "Smart WiFi" for some time - the product was rebranded as Smart BRO which makes sense since the actual company that runs it is now called Smart Broadband Inc. (formerly known as Meridian). And yes it doesn't use wi-fi, it uses a wireless broadband product from Motorola called Motorola Canopy. The confusion about wi-fi came about because of the old brand, so I'm glad they changed that.

Now as to setting up Wi-Fi at home this is a cinch to do nowadays and not very expensive. You just need a) an Internet connection and b) a Wi-Fi router. Wi-Fi routers come pretty cheap nowadays around 3,000-4,000 depending on the brand. I use a Linksys router at home. The advantage is if you have a lot of mobile computers (laptops, PDAs, 3G phones that have WiFi  like some of the new Nokias) then you can share your Internet connection easily around the house without having to lay out cable. Or if you have a small LAN involving many PCs, you can use that too - the only thing is the connection in the network will be a bit slower (54 kbps versus 100 mbps). For  file transfer between machines that may be significant, but for sharing an Internet connection that is more than enough.

Overall setting up WiFi makes a home network plug and play nowadays. The only extra step is to secure the network with a password so your neighbor doesn't end up mooching your bandwidth for free.

Now about the Internet provider - people here all mention Globe as an alternative to PLDT if they don't like PLDT broadband services for reasons real or imagined - actually your choices are lot wider and you have a lot of pickings. In QC you have Bayantel DSL, if you're in an area covered by cable, you have Sky Zipdee, there is still Destiny Cable, and some people are saying if you can get Eastern DSL that is pretty good.

We're also on Smart Bro. We just hooked up the Smart Bro antenna directly to the wireless router. Before kasi, we had an issue with rats in the house ... those tiny mickey mouse ones. And damn, how they like chewing on the lan cables!

You wifi'ers might find this interesting... DIY WiFi Antennas.

Mostly waveguides and yagi's that increase the gain. I wonder if this will increase reception and help prevent dropouts. Hmmm... there's even one based on a Pringles can.

D-Link naman ang gamit ko. Okey din sya! We have around 5 computers hooked up, and all their wifi cards are also D-Link. Just make sure you upgrade the firmware.

cable internet is a faster connection than say, smart bro (which i am on), but has its downside.
on a linksys WRT54GL (around 3k-3,5k; a booster anttenae was added to it (about 2.5k) to enable a compound of three houses access), smart bro is pretty decent. on rare occasions, there have been total signal drops (about 4 so far since we got the connection). however, the upside seems to be that soon after the taiwan quake (as mentioned in earlier replies), we only experienced uber slow speed for a total of 5 hours but no total disconnection.
our location: fairview, qc.
computers connected: wired desktop PCs (3), wireless PC laptops (2), wireless Apple laptop (1). My cousin says he is also able to get a connection to his cel phone.
overall: satisfied with smart bro although if cable internet providers would only maximize their service, the speed it gives should rate a more decent, faster connection.
advise: whatever you choose, set a password or you'll be giving your neighbors a free ride. :)

Any computer store nowadays carries them. Typical brands: Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc.

You can maximize your home Wi-Fi experience further if apart from laptop and desktop computers you also have mobile devices (PDAs and mobile phones) with Wi-Fi. This way you can walk anywhere in the house and still tap into your Internet connection. You can surf Talk@PhilMusic while sitting in the CR. That's my recommendation of the day for the truly addicted.

interesting...

but i believe that if there are multiple users we dont need to increase the gain, for it will narrow the beamwidth.

meaning the antenna will be directional...kung nakatutuok sa isang user ung waveguide or yagi antenna, mlakas signal nya, pero sa ibang user, hihina or baka mwalan ang signal, wala rin...

i thnk its better to keep it omnidirectional...para equal ang radiation

my 3 cents  :-D

HAHAHAHA

TUTOK NA TUTOK!

ayos! but make sure na its encrypted..as for the routers that i support we always make it a point to enable double security like WPA and wireless mac filtering para sure! with the range..you may want to consider the distance of the router to the computers and also the interferences that can affect the signal.Ü

PEACE.... PEACE.... PEACE.... PEACE....
