Self taught din ako mga brader. wala kasi akong pera pang formal lesson. kung may libre sana jan... haha! madami kasi talagang advantages pag may drum teacher ka, one thing dun, mas direct ang learning mo...meaning, tanong-sagot agad...isa pa dun, complicated grooves can be easier to understand kasi kaya break down yun ng teacher mo sayo na hindi ka mababaliw ng husto at napakadami pang iba. :-)

pero syempre parang give and take yan...nasa absorption din siguro yan ng student at nasa pag simplify ng teacher mo.  Maganda din naman maging self taught basta ikaw mismo, you give time on your drumming at open minded ka din. Take time on listening to different genres, other drummers at syempre, dapat ikaw din mismo, naghahanap ng concepts at gumagawa ng theories of your own to make your drumming much enjoyable and easier. Wala naman tama at mali sa drumming hangga't ikaw mismo ang nagsabi na sa sarili mo na mali yung ginagawa mo. It really doesn't matter how you start, what matters most is how you end.  :-)

i think learning basics are always good. better siguro pagself taught pero lessons on basics since you can be guided properly. i think it's better to start playing by yourself after basics so you get to find your own style or sound.  :-D

self thought:

nood lang sa fellow drummers, watch alot of live bands,
watched alot of Metallica VHS tapes noon (lars ulrich styled eh)
watched Guns N'Roses live videos (Matt Sorum din)
WTF pati Bon Jovi (Ticco Torres)
walang pambili ng drum pad so sa unan tumatambol.....

... nung high school iniyakan si tita para bilan ng drum kit (hehehe Blue Fernando kit)

habang nasa date with the GF tapping at stomping habang sinasabayan ang sounds sa jeep... hehehehe

until now ganun parin (recently na influence ako gumamit ng Double pedal... mas comfortable ako sa single peds, yet ang saya pala ng double ped)

hay naku...... dami magagaling na drummers out there

woah! daming self taught na drummers ah :D i guess mostly ng andito is self taught talaga. i started out sa church namin dati, basics lang turo skin, quarter, 8th and 16th notes lang tinuro sakin noon, nung college days na lang ako nagkaroon ng urge para magaral pa kasi uso banda sa college dati hehehe! "Kapa" pa ang term ngaun Cipra or Cifra na hehehe. ngayon sa church na ko, slight full-time :D learning now na gumamit ng metronome and sequences habang pumapalo... and still on self-learning although i consider our pastor and music director as my mentors... sa church lang ako nakakahawak ng kit tuwing saturday practices, youth service at sunday services... madalas shadow drumming lang ginagawa ko at sa practice pad at immersion sa mga kantang cinicipra... pano kya yung formal lessons? hehehe sabik eh no? Toinks!!!

hehe, merun akong 4 students ngaung summer ser, nakapagturo nadin ako ng 45 yrs. old, at doctor..hehehe..try mo tab ituro ser parang pang intro lang sa basic beat...ayus ung batang me interest, meron kasi akong student dati yung nanay ang interesado ung anak eh pilit..hehe

eto basic beat na tab ser,

HH|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-| (hi-hats)
SD|-----o--------o---| (snare drum)
BD|o---------o-------| (bass drum)
     1 +  2  +  3 + 4 +

mejo hindi pantay pantay ser, sana magets mo..hehe,

-ang ginagawa ko eh HH muna down to BD,

-emphasize mo kung saang count ang strike ng bawat isa, for example ung snare eh sa counts 2 and 4 ang strike..

-(+ is read as "and") bala ang counting nyan ser eh 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and..

naglecture nako ser, ot na.. :-D

I'm still at the self study category.  Wala kasi time for formal lessons pero I am
willing to undergo training, pero not at the moment due to time and financial
constraints

hello, ako i'm a self-taught drummer din like most of you. i started to play drums when i was 8 and now i'm 23, for almost 15 years i never had a formal lesson. when it comes to note reading i can read a little and i learned it online. most of us if not all we had music class back in grade school about musical notation, right? okay lang sa akin kahit di ako ngtake ng formal lessons in the past. experience is one of the best if not the best teacher... we just have to constantly learn and learn and learn with or without a teacher.
keep on aiming to be the best that you can be...!!!

god bless us all...

i had formal lessons before sa yamaha basic note reading, pero during that time mga 1990 ang teacher ko di tinuro ang proper way of holding the sticks, heel up or heel down sa bass drum d ko lang sure ngayon kung ganun ang turo sa yamaha school of music

ngayon plano ko maging self taught based sa mga drum instructional videos wala akong kit just a practice pad and 2 pairs of drumsticks havent played for 15 years at plano kong magbuo ng banda nag lagay na ako ng LF for musicians who are interested in jazz funk genre kind of music

I don't have anything against being self taught or having lessons. But in my own opinion, drumming and like any other instrument is a language. We learn basic words from the people around us when we were small. Just like you learn a simple lick, a basic groove or fill by hearing other drummers play.  We start out by way of emulation, or by copying what we hear. The collection of what we had aquired through years of listening, emulating (through disciplined practice) makes our drumming vocabulary. It pays to have a good teacher to teach you proper technique and discipline. Again, ( I'm using speech as an analogy), we learn to speak before we go to school. But it is in school that they teach us to harness our ability and be fluent in the skill. Just like in drumming, a good teacher guides you in the right and proper execution of playing the instrument. To be a good drummer. Drumming is not just a technical display of dexterity, prowess and barrage of chops. It is about TIME KEEPING, TONE, GOOD TECHNIQUE, AND OFCOURSE THE GROOVE. Now if you have a high level of awareness starting out studying on your own, you won't need a good teacher to guide you. Maybe unless you are what they call the 'kung-fu genius' of drumming, that's one in a million.

There are things that we learn outside of school and things that we learn inside. A combination of the two would be best. A good suggestion for drummers starting out would be to:
1- startout studying on your own. Its more convinient to take lessons from a teacher later on once you know the basics.  Meetings would be progressive.
2-Get your hands on cd's of the great drummers that you want.
3-Watch videos of the great drummers that you want.
4-Watch drummers live when you have the chance.
5-Try to emulate what you hear from cd's, watch from videos, andwatch from live performances. This is what you call your formative years.
6- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. You'll be surprised of new great things that you would learn and discover each time you spend with your instrument.pRACTICE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR IF YOU CAN, THIS WOULD HELP YOU WITH YOUR FORM. Practice with and without a metronome or any time keeping device.
7-Play along cd's of your fav bands. Play different styles of music as much as possible
8-Get a good teacher to guide and teach you to the rudiments and good techniques of execution, and to monitor your tone or unique sound. Ofcourse to teach you to read music. Yeah it's kinda boring for starters, but this helps you a lot in precisely analysing licks and stuff. Helps you getgood session work too :-D
9-Try to incorporate everything in your own playing style. I believe what we should strive for is to develop our own unique voice to the instrument.
Playing the instrument is saying who we are, our personality, our individual uniqueness in playing the drums..
Imagine how boring the world of drumming would be if every drummer sounded alike.
10-join drum communities, or build camaradery among other drummers. Or better build  drum gatherrings. You could learn from each other. More heads are better than one. :-D

I hope what i've written helps.
