What metal bands are you listening to now whose tone you really like?  Me:

SHADOWS FALL
HATEBREED
KILLSWITCH ENGAGE
A DOZEN FURIES
EVERGREEN TERRACE
DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN
MUDVAYNE (the latest album)
MESHUGGAH

These bands redefined high gain for me.  ;)

i am all for prog and playing layered riffs but i hate Dillinger Escape Plan and I've seen them a few times as part of touring lineups. I just can't get into their type of "math" metal even if it is math metal since they just seem to stick of their schtick of using odd time signatures with no regard for "groove" which is what I like in my music. Mudvayne is moving towards more math metal stuff but they have syncopating groove elements in their songs.

Lucky you.  I wanna see DEP live.  Mudvayne i great too in the groove + math department.  DEP on the other hand is more into polyrhythmic sections hence some find them disharmonic.  But I find them ingenious.  I also like their collaborations with Mike Patton.

Meshuggah also gets my vote for groove + math.

I just can't get into DEP. Mudvayne are my hometown boys and they still play a lot of local shows when they can. I remember when they first started out and they were touring the same local metal scene I was at, they certainly looked different during the early days:)

Messhuggah has gotten weirder over the years. Right around the onset of the  "Gothenburg Sound" which was heralded by bands such as In Flames, Messhugah started going into very lengthy epic types of music that employed 8 string guitars to makes things more layers without sacrificing heavy. However, I can't say their current foray into more experimental stuff is heavier than their older material. I last saw them when they toured with Tool for the Lateralus album.

The tones Opeth managed to achieve on their latest album are great. Nevermore also came a long way in terms of guitar sound, if you compare their early albums to how they sound now.

John Petrucci's always had pristine sound as well. While we're at prog...even if they're not necessarily heavy, I love David Gilmour's sound on "Dark Side Of The Moon". Very audiophile-friendly. :D
