Dudes, Im planning to start a Design a Guitar Body and Headstock contest. The designs should be unique and as much as possible does not follow the industry standards. Please see below for reference:
Guitar Designs which became Industry Standards
Firebird (1963)
Explorer (1958)
Telecaster (1949)
Stratocaster (1954)
Flying V (1957)
Les Paul (1940)
SG (Solid Guitar) (1961)
Mockingbird (1975)
Warlock (1981)
Steinberger (1979)
I havent given much thought about the mechanics of the contest but Im planning to go with the following:
Limited to 2 entries per member. Only PM members as of 8/26/2010 are eligible to join the contest.
Image sizes should not exceed the rules and regulation prescribed maximum size (640 x 480 pixels)
Only one winner will be selected
The prize will be any item or items equivalent to P20,000.00 which can be bought from the PM classifieds (to keep the money inside the loop)
Deadline for submission is January 15, 2011 (Deadline may be extended depending on the number of entries received)
The winner will be announced before the end of January 2011
The prize amount will come from the TS (region III)
Any thoughts?

2. A maximum of 2 entries per member will be allowed.
3. Entries must be represented via a technical drawing, a sketch, or any other media that would compliment your artistic and designing skills.
4. Entries must be posted within this thread only.
5. Entries must not exceed the allowable image size limit (640 x 480 pixels).
6. Only one winning entry will be selected.
7. Deadline for submission of entries is January 15, 2011.
8. The winner will be announced on or before February 15, 2011.
9. The winner will receive an item or items equivalent to P20, 000.00 which can be bought from the PM Classifieds (to keep the money inside the loop).
10. The winning entry will be made into an actual build and due recognition shall be given to the designer.
11. No entry fees or any of those sorts will be collected.

not necessarily in full technical detail. i'm just after the shapes. no specific genre. open design para lumabas ang creativity. pwede in full color complete with measurements or just sketches.

Other shapes that are unique and were a hit were the Iceman, the Jaguar/Mustang, the RG (post-superstrat), the Doublecut (e.g. LP, PRS), and the Dean ML.

Explain ko lang ng kaunti yung gawa kong design (sorry medyo crude :P). Nagsimula itong guitar body design na ito nuong una kong nakita yung
Dean Cadillac.

Gusto ko sana yung guitar pero I had a few small issues with it:
1. Masyadong narrow yung "waist" ng guitar body
2. Medyo hindi ko trip yung shape niya mula top to bottom--hindi even yung width
3. Hindi na ako sanay sa gitarang masyadong "mabait" yung itsura, and the blunt-looking corners of the guitar make it look a little like what I was
describing
4. THE HEADSTOCK IS UNWIELDY
5. Di ko gaanong trip ang Les Paul scale length, and I'd like 24 frets on the guitar.
So I made this sketch to "correct" the little things that I didn't like on the Cadillac, and came up with a more modern rendition of it.
Makikita po sa sketch na mas aggressive yung points nung guitar, mas pahaba ng kaunti yung pinaka-"belly," mas uniform yung width ng design from
the neck area to the bottom, at mas malaki yung "waistline." Medyo subtle yung gawa ko sa headstock para simple pero functional at low-pro.
Since I couldn't draw the more elaborate components of the guitar, ililista ko na lang yung mga plano kong parts:
1. It can be either a strat-style fixed bridge or Gotoh Floyd trem design
2. It can be a dual humbucker, triple single coil, or HSS design
3. It will have a five way blade switch and a volume and optional tone control
4. It will be built with a 24 fret neck (any fretboard wood), with stainless steel super jumbo 6100 frets, preferably without binding
5. It will be a bolt on with the Prestige Wizard neck profile plus the volute (and top mount nut if locking trem) (neckthrough would be cool too)
6. It will have a basswood body (if not, it's the builder's choice of tonewood)

the design will be used for an actual build. 20K php is cheap considering the cheapest professional designer i can find cost $2000 and that's only one mind working :-)

Does this mean the winner will have his own unit just like the Ibanez Jem design contest thing? Will the winner get an extra pay for constructing his/her winning design to life or everything is already inclusive of the 20k php? Thanks.

Exactly! Mahirap na kasi may iba pang makauna sa design mo bago mismo yung gumawa nung concept or design. :-D

ah so prang ang idea is babayadan ni pareng region ang mananalo/magustuhan niyang design then gagawan niya ng guitara para sakanya tama? hmmmm sounds interesting pede din yun,,pero yun lang dapat aware yung mga magjojoin dito na ang winning design eh gagawin ni pareng region,,yan mas malinaw na ang mechanics ,,dapat din may permiso sa gumawa ng design :) kumbaga payag ang mga sasali,,, :) at least mas malinaw na now,,o guys join na :P

yeah.. it's a work in progress, though.. matagal pa naman ang deadline (til next year pa).. so habang maaga, pwede pa ayusin yung mechanics, lalo na para sa mga ngayon lang nabasa.. :-)

+1 to this! kung magsasubmit kayo ng design, that means agree na kayo sa prize which is 20k. panget naman kung manalo kayo tapos biglang mag demand ng extra. siguro ang magandang extra prize is yung acknowledgement sa designer. what i mean is the design will belong to regionIII and use it anyway he wants but he will not claim the design as his own creation. kung saan man umabot yung design, dapat kasama pa din yung name ng nag design. malay mo tayo pala makapag produce ng next strat!

i might do flat sawn but wouldnt want it to be stringed anything more than 10's, it will be a finished neck..my hands just dont stick on the back of the neck.

Yes. I believe that the contest is still on. It's still a long way before the deadline, though. :-)
About the chance, in my opinion, it would be quite hard to say or to verify if the new account was the output of a previous banned account. Credibility issues.

Electric Spire "ES" Body with Matching Headstock

Design Concept:
Designed the body with the idea of two horseshoe magnets stuck together in an "X" configuration. Geometric, but not too pointy, to fit a wide range of musical styles, however the focus is more on metalheads, especially with math/postmodern cores and other technically-inclined realms of music. It gives the impression of a toned-down, controlled beast who has already mastered his tendencies. Ergonomics are also put into consideration.
The headstock resembles a lightning rod/tuning fork of sorts, symbolic of steering away from the vintage. It represents the continuing aspirations and advancements done by luthiers and musical technologists. A fitting identifying mark for the modern guitar.
Openly inspired by the Parker Dragonfly.

I drew these free hand immediately after regionIII created the thread. I was supposed to create a colored and 2D/3D version of these drafts I made but I didn't have enough time to study or to use sketchup or photoshop. I know I could've done better.

this is my first entry, i went for a more classic approach, combined various guitar classics. im eyeing for a more radical look on my second entry :-D :-D sana nagustuhan niyo
my 2nd entry. went for a rather ergonomic approach. this guitar aims for the player to utilize his wrist movement rather than his arms in playing. contoured to be played whiled standing and sitting. confort is the key :lol:

Here's my entry.
kakabasa ko lang nito today, i just hope pasok pa sa dead line.
di ako makaisip ng pangalan kaya Project Ivory 2 nalang. Named after Ivory, my white LP.
tom de lounge 335 inspired and size na kasing laki ng LP. i was aiming for versatile type guitar kaya there was a note in the drawing regarding the neck pick ups that you can either have one inserted but underneath the finish (para tago) or just dont place one. The body had a cut at the bottom end para sa mga metal and wicked riffs where in pede mong ipatong ung guitar sa hita at mag solo k ng naka 90deg angle ung guitar.

Design Concept:
When I was designing this, Jazzmasters and other guitars with "-master" in its name were the inspiration. I wanted a guitar with regal looks, hence the white and red color schemes.
The headstock resembles a scepter, which is quite self-explanatory :P
I really wanted to call it " Stage King"...but that sucks.

The headstock was actually nailed after several trials of designs. What actually inspired me about it are the Musicman EBMM guitar and the Parker guitar headstocks. The funny thing is, after plenty of trial and error, the first thing that came to my mind is a look of a twisted bowling pin. :lol:

Electric Spire "ES" Body with Matching Headstock

Design Concept:
Designed the body with the idea of two horseshoe magnets stuck together in an "X" configuration. Geometric, but not too pointy, to fit a wide range of musical styles, however the focus is more on metalheads, especially with math/postmodern cores and other technically-inclined realms of music. It gives the impression of a toned-down, controlled beast who has already mastered his tendencies. Ergonomics are also put into consideration.
The headstock resembles a lightning rod/tuning fork of sorts, symbolic of steering away from the vintage. It represents the continuing aspirations and advancements done by luthiers and musical technologists. A fitting identifying mark for the modern guitar.
Openly inspired by the Parker Dragonfly.

This is something i'd like to call the Witchcraft model...
- Simple design
- Inspired by the Gibson Flying V and highly modified
- Headstock totally my idea (out of nothing)
- Pearloid marker on 12th fret only
- Hardware taken from Gibson/Epiphone, but i'm not limiting it to that
- I just used the Epiphone logo to make the guitar look complete
- Wood and other materials is totally up to sir Region III
