hehe,
eto mga brad minsan na may nakapalitan ako ng kuro-kuro. mas trip ng iba ang cifra dahil mas naeexpress nila tugtugan. iba naman, de-nota para disiplinado ang tugtog.
e kayo? ano ang inyong pananaw?? ^-^

for me, nota + cifra.. :D
personaly kasi merong mga note runs na sobrang hirap cifrahin.. kaya to make it more convenient and practical, mag hanap ng piyesa..hehehe unless siguro if you are "up to a challenge" sa cifrahan..

hehe pero minsan talaga may point na mas trip natin cifrahin tas apply onting self rendition hehehe. minsan hirap din yung orig version ng kanta kaya kelangan mag-adjust ng banda hehehe

Both works for me since there are times na me available na music sheets wherein you can play the song/s as they are pero pag wala - thank God for the gift of musicality, specially pag need ng effects since di lahat ng music sheet notes of the effects used and when to engage them...

I do both, maski meron song sheet, iba parin iyng mag cifra, dahil dito natretrain iyng tenga natin "perfect pitch".

If available yung sheet music why not, most of the times kasi cifra lang.

since may alam naman ako sa notes. I combine them. This is very helpful kasi naiimprove yung hearing techniques at note reading.
Pero pinakamaganda talaga manuod sa youtube!! :-D

Both are Good. Wala naming masama if you Read notes from sa sheet or kapain mo lang while listening. as long as you play nicely :)

For me, parehas silang maganda. Pero kapag de-nota masusunod mo yung flow and hindi ka maliligaw :-D Sa cifra okay din pero may makakalimutan kang part mo unlike sa de-nota is nakaindikated na. Nico from Christ Commission Fellowship - Cavite (Ccf Cavite)

Both are good skills to develop/enchance. Ako personally cifra lang talaga ako dati as drummer, tapos kapag di ko makuha yung drum part, gumagawa nalang ako ng "sounds like" part ko, :lol:. Nung natuto ako ng music theory, ayun nakukuha ko na yung dating di ko makuha-kuha sa cifra. Pero siyempre kapag tight schedule at walang time mag-cifra, tingin nalang music sheet or takbo kay old but trusty Youtube. :-D

How bout a pros and cons list for both? Personally, here's my take:
Note-reading
PROS:
- The band would be consistent, since they would all play the song as it is written
- Smoother rehearsals. Kasi ideally, everyone would all see the flow of the song: what happens after the second chorus, what's the passing chord before the song modulates etc
- Music sheets do a very good job at giving a song sections or segments. If the band has trouble somewhere, it's so easy to pick a bar or a system, or even a page to work on. You don't have to put up with vague parts like "yung part bago matapos yung second chorus"
- Less time consuming. If there's a riff in a song that everyone MUST play, you dont have to listen to the song, over and over and over again to learn it
CONS:
- Music sheets aren't always available
- Not everyone knows how to read music. This becomes particularly problematic when you build your praise team around note readers; when the inevitable time comes when someone has to leave the band, his/her replacement MUST also be a note reader. Churches don't always have this luxury
- You'll tend to depend too much on music sheets. If it falls off your stand, you better be prepared to play 'blind' for the rest of the song, or until someone's nice enough to place your sheet back. Which brings me to the thing I hate most about these things
- Music sheets ALWAYS fall off my stand. Well, not always, but I'm too clumsy for these things
Playing/learning by ear:
PROS:
- Bands don't require anything to play a song. Maybe the lineup, so they'll know what song comes after what, but apart from that, they can just go on stage and play
- Improvisation is easier when you're not bound by a music sheet. And by improvisation, I dont mean like soloing. Improvisation in the sense that when someone screws up something (it does happen), the band would be ready to improvise
- You can visualize the song better, and thus learn it better, and finally play it better. Because when you learn by ear, you're really imagining how the artist created the song. You might not view it this way, but this is what your mind does when you try to repeat on the fretboard (or the keyboard, or the drums) what your ears just heard. You're emulating the artist.
- Although not really that relevant on some churches, it's easier to 'put your own spices' to songs when you play by ear
CONS:
- This mentality often leads to inconsistency. When you're not being guided by something, you tend to go rogue. You tend to play more than you should
- Unless you are very good at listening and identifying notes, learning songs by ear is TIME CONSUMING
- You tend to forget. If you have a 6-song lineup, all difficult, Israel Houghton songs, and your band leader decided to murder the chords, you're most likely to forget one or two things in there (unless you're a really, really gifted musician. Praise the Lord for that). The human mind can only process a limited amount of information, we just have to live with that
Again, I don't claim this to be a flawless pros and cons list. Just talking out of experience. I'm a play by ear guy, and I do think that the balance between the two is what leads to better playing. I agree, they do compliment each other in a beautiful way. You can't really say something is better than the other, they both are 2 sides of a coin.

Cifra lang ako, sakit sa ulo ng note reading WAHAHHA. yun nga lang mas less sa effort pag marunong ka mag basa ng notes lalo na sa mga mahihirap na runs, nakahit ilang beses mo pakinggan ang hirap parin kunin ahaha... syempre pag marunong ka mag basa ng nota, WOW ka may advantage ka agad hahah

cifra/improvisation and note reading if combined together, the music will be more epic.
Minsan kasi, sa music sheets, may mga measure pa tayo dun na pwedeng pasukan ng intense na improvisation.
keyboardists and lead guitarist usually jive together pagdating sa pag iimprovisation. Bass line improvisations pwede rin
mas gusto ko nag iimprovise ang bass line kasi iba ang tunog bass sa pandinig ko, aka soul of the song,

cifra lang mga boss.. hirap kasi pag de-nota tayo.. mas ok kung alam na alam mo ung kanta by ear and by heart.. di lang ksi tau mga musikero lang, mga ministers tayo ng Lord to the people and people to the Lord.. mas ok kung sensitive pa rin tayo sa flow ng Spirit and not to the song or the notes of the song..

IMO, why not both? :)) Although sa akin personally, while you increase your skill be note-reading, playing by ear is very important for praise and worship team members esp. if you have to know the key to the song you're playing. Hindi lahat ng nasa album ay parating susundan. :-D

Both talaga. Yan ang opinion ng mas nakararami. Pero syempre depende sa Sitwasyon pa rin... :)

naalala ko lang, why not cifra? put an effort sa kanta kasi hnd naman un para sa tao diba? para kay God un.

Sir di naman po porket humingi sya ng chords ay masasabi na di sapat yung effort na binigay nya o dapat mas higitan nya pa yun. Sayang din kasi yung technology like internet kung di natin gagamitin na advantage sa pag pupuri para kay God. And sir sabi nyo ka para kay God naman yun, kaya si God din ang nakakaalam ng value ng effort ng worshipper nya.

Naku, buti na lang hindi kita ka team mate kasi mahihirapan pala ako magpaturo sayo ng chords. :) kidding aside, there's nothing wrong with asking for help. Lahat tayo may kanya-kanyang level ng pagkakaunawa ng musika. May iba mabilis, may iba naman, parang ako, tone-deaf. Hehehe
