In the case of some guitarists, you need to be specific which era or album referred to. Example: Beano/Cream-era Clapton vs 80s/90s Clapton. current Buddy Guy vs 50s Buddy Guy. pre-Baker/Diezel oasgomez vs current oasgomez. :-)

Love it!

While this would sound like a great idea, sometimes a recording cannot be a good representation of how the actual source sounded in the studio.  For instance, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" can give you that impression that EC's sounds were so slick.  Actually, try plugging to a JTM45 with KT66s and crank it, that IS the Clapton/Cream sound. It is huge and deafening.  Same goes for pre-Acid Beatles recordings.  AC30s are so jangly yet the original masters sounded like poop guitar-wise.

That's a given. You have to treat live sound and recorded sound as two different entities, but two sides of the same coin. Depende na lang kung ano goal ng recording engineer/artist. If it's to capture the live sound perfectly/ there will still be some compromise. If you factor in the distribution medium (radio, cd, vinyl, wav, or lossless formats, etc.), the final sound can be even further removed from the orig live sound.

Oh, baka gawin nyo pang intriga ha.  Si oasgomez mismo nagsasabi na ang laki ng improvement sa tone nya when he went from good Jap/US bands to high-end brands like Diezel, Baker, etc.

Vai's, Yngwie's, Paul Gilbert's tones are NOT venerated. They hardly ever get mentioned. You hardly ever have people saying like "I want to get his tone"...

They certainly are mentioned a lot here in Philmusic.

Same thoughts on EVH. Never liked his tone.

I said eric johnson with a question mark because I used to like his tone until this happened

Ummm sarap Clapton on "From the Cradle" using a Soldano amp and a 335. Thats what got me into the blues. Jingle Angel kasi ang review nya sa Jingle mag, so I bought it. Managed to destroy the tape from overplaying.

awoooo!! may CD ako nito hahahaha....grabe....

well usually the notes sound really tubby na talaga when you use a lot of gain in the neck pick up position.

some of paul gilbert's songs in the silence followed by a deafening roar album have that kind of tone...

but it's a really good pickup when doing god-like string skipping runs, like the one paul usually does. it helps the notes decay a little slower so you don't have a dead silence while skipping strings...

but then again... panget nga pag masyado na mataas.

magandang neck pickup tone... gary moore in his cover of red house, using a strat. blues shred!

ergo, let's not generalize.

petrucci and drover got tons of gain and their lead tone using the neck pickup are pretty awesome.
