It was Little Stevie Vai's hands, i think, if i can remember the details i read correctly. the Karate Kid mimiced the other parts where there were half body shots. close up of fingers was vai. (I like how Zappa nicknamed Vai "The Blue Haired Italian Kid")

Classic movie, can never get enough of it! ;)

Uhh... I think it was Ry Coorder for all the slide stuff on the soundtrack but Arlen Roth who coached Ralph and recorded the non-slide stuff.  Ralph "Milli Vanilli'd" his guitar parts on the movie. Kamay nya talaga yun.

From http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090888/trivia :

Quote
Steve Vai dubbed Eugene's solo. Ry Cooder dubbed his slide parts.

After the guitar dual, Eugene plays "Big Bad Moon" by Joe Satriani.

"Eugene's Trick Bag", the updated classical piece at the climax of the film, is largely based on Niccolo Paganini's Caprice #5. Paganini, as rumor has it, sold his soul to the devil for his musical skills.

for what it's worth, i think ralph did a good job faking it :-).

point of clarification-

i was referring to the neoclassical part of the head cutting duel ;) the karate kid's slide parts were correctly described by the other folks

Yup Ry Cooder scored the whole movie. He's apparently into roots music of all types, he was also involved the the Buena Vista Social Club project that opened up the world to Cuban music.

Crossroads .... alltime blues movie. The Title Harp part was played by Sonny Terry. I think the other harp parts were by Dennis Gruenling.  (not sure).

i have the dvd...

will get to the bottom of this...hehe

from what i know.....eugene's trick bag was performed twice in the movie.
one when eugene was practicin arpeggios on his nylon string--in his room.where he later picked up his beaten up steel string and proceeded to thump out a blues in E.

steve vai did the electric guitar version of trick bag--i mean he recorded it with ralph machio aping the fingers. i believe it was also filmed slow and later sped up to match the tempo of the real recording..so that's two

three if you count the "banu" version that steve vai did to answer eugene's challenge.

and vai's character was 'jack butler' the devil's guitarist.

will come up with the singer who did "crossroad blues" in the beginning of the film.

also there is a ms. narcisso during eugene's exam.pointed out to me by butch roxas, my classical guitar teacher in UST/blue rats guitarist...ms narciso is of filipino heritage.
guitarist telling the drummer what the intro to laklak was. caught on video.at binilangan pa ang drummer 1-2...1-2-3..lol
