Stealing licks from our drumming idols is normal. Though I prefer the term "borrow".
Here are some of my favorite licks from some of my favorite drummers, which I often use on my drumming.
1. Neil Peart's quick double-bass sextuplet lick (References: ending fill of live recording of "Big Money", on Rush's "A Show Of Hands" live recording; and ending lick on "Limelight").
2. Tim Alexander's double bass lick used on Primus' "My Name Is Mud".
3. The alternating double bass/hand fills, commonly played by Mike Portnoy.
4. The rolling shuffle groove, popularized by Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan's "Babylon Sisters"), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin's "Fool In The Rain"), and Jeff Porcaro (Toto's "Rosanna").
5. The quick triplet fills popularized by Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl.
6. Dave Weckl's songo patterns on "Festival De Ritmo".
7. Chris "Daddy" Dave's licks with Mint Condition.
I still have some more licks and fills which I "borrowed" from my favorite drummers. But whenever I play these, I try my best to make it my own and take it to a farther level.
