learning to solo - need tips from experienced players
« on: March 29, 2010, 12:17:09 AM »
can i just learn note intervals of scales instead of learning music technically and do riffs and licks based on "feeling"? i want to skip learning to read notes and just play stuff that i can hear inside my head.

imho opinion playing licks or improvisations from what you hear in your head is good

but i dont think you would be able to properly execute them without the proper knowledge

i learned how to play licks with being just mediocre on the note reading bit

read up kahit kaunti

then experiment

works for a lot of people

yes you can! If you ask me, mas ok saken magskip na lang ng theories (or kahit basic knowledge lang) kase feeling ko mas hindi predictable ang mga choice of notes ko when I do riffs and licks. :-D

Eto base sa nabasa ko sa creative guitar, sabi dun "you should know the mood/sound of each scales before coming up to a good solo/improv". Yun ang pagkakaintindi ko.
Don't become obsessed with sounding like one particular player and sounding exactly like him.

learning solo?

hmm...

Based on my experience, ganito ang naging sequence ko..

1.major scale - nandun na lahat eh. Ionian, dorian, mixo, phryg, lyd, aeol, loc...

2. i sing it out.. then hanapin ko sa fretboard..

gnun ako nagstart when i was 16.. well, wla ako proper lesson kasi self study lang ako.. so dun ako sa magiging comfortable ako.. Natuto talaga ko by ear.. I'm a oido

Then i realized, i need to spice things up.. that's when i decided to learn techniques na..

3. legato, sticato, alternate picking, etc..

So nun mejo nakukuha ko na sya, i got deeper na, na parang nasangkot na ko sa isang malaking gulo..
Dun na pumasok yung mga moods na tinutuloy ni sir lenpopz.. blues, rock.. more on pentatonics and passed notes.. then anjan yung jazz(na nagpaiyak ng utak ko! haha).. bsta yun..
Pero focus ko ksi is rock talaga.. so stick ako dun..

So d ko na gaano matandaan yung ibang process eh..

In short, bsta kung ano yung sa palagay mo o napapansin mong kulang, alamin mo... Iconquer mo, my internet naman eh... 87% ng knowledge ko na-gain ko sa world wide web..

10%?

my ears..

2%?

take your time to learn solo's from the guitar players you listen to and try to apply them to your style of soloing :-D

go wild like hendrix :-D(even though he learned the scales :-D)

if all else fails use the scales and modes of the guitar:-D
