Re: 20" K custom dark ride & 20" K ride reviews/comparison thread
« Reply #875 on: April 20, 2011, 05:52:17 PM »
All rides mentioned are good imo but I'd go for the K ride if I were you...

Got the chance to own all of the rides mentioned - K Custom dark, K Custom Medium and K regular. All three are crashable (the kc dark wins in the crashability department because of it's weight. The KC Med and K regular are both crashable as well. Just louder and less musical as a crash). Would have kept all, but just couldn't afford to do so

My take on these cymbals

K Custom Dark Ride -- High pitched clean stick sound -- almost Paiste like. Washy...but its wash is not that complex / trashy sounding.
Contrary to it being called a dark ride, it's not that dark compared to other med thin Ks / K Customs. Might get lost in the mix if used in loud rock music

Wanted a ride that had a bit more stick definition. Traded my KC dark ride with a:

K Custom Medium Ride -- High pitched stick with low vol. undertones. A bit drier and more pingy than the KC Dark

Found the KC medium a bit too high pitched for my taste. Sold it then bought a:

K Ride -- Low pitched, woody stick sound. Dry...minimal low pitched wash
...which I eventually sold because I needed money. Wouldn't think twice about getting another k ride though...

thanks for the reviews brothers... i think i'll go for med thin-kcus ride this time, i prefer a ride that is light weight (makalansing) coz mahina ako pumalo, so i want a ride na mabilis ang response plus im using 17"k dark thin crash and i guess thats a good combination of ride and crash... to Sir jckazs, with great respect po, i had a Kcus medium ride, but for me, parang kapos ang kalansing sa riding pero ok naman sa bell, di ako na-satisfied thats why binenta ko. For K ride, ok sana riding but like Sir glennaui said, its not as good as Kcus when it comes to crashability coz medium ang weight... maybe i'll have them both after kcus (as if kaya pa ng bulsa) hehe tooo expensive... anyway thanks again, saludo po ako mga Sir...

err kung mahina ka pumalo wag k custom dark ride ha or light weight rides. mas mahina yun at washy kesa sa k cus medium ride pero crashable. kung gusto mo ng kalansing, try avedis or a custom kaya lang since makalansing sila, hindi ka makakakuha ng magandang crash sound sa mga yun. trade off talaga

Yes Sir Peeves i've tried narin A's & A cus sa mga friends and gigs before and they're good enough but for crashability aspect, medyo di ko talaga gusto. I think sakto k cus for me coz of its weight= good for crashing, ride= good riding sound, medium bell and its DARK sound since im using k dark thin crash so i guess its a perfect match. anyway thanks Sir Peeves

Try ko lang sir hehe. Ito yung mga naexperience ko ng gamitin sa gig jan sa list niyo.

A Custom Crash - Very bright and cutting! Clean sounding too. Normal lang yung decay and it's responsive naman on how hard or how soft you hit it. It blends quite well with the music but has just enough attack to cut through.

A Custom Proj. Crash - Compared to the regular AC Crashes, these standout more and are louder. Very bright! They're thicker which means mas matagal decay niya and nawala ng konti yung responsiveness pag compared sa AC Crash pero ayos parin! Kung medyo maingay mga amps at malalakas mga guitars sa band mo mas ok ito gamitin. As the name says, it's meant for 100% projection.

K Custom Dark Crash - Very beautiful sounding crash. It won't cut through the distortion as much pero napaka-musical ng crash na ito. You get dark overtones which are nice to hear on quieter sets. Pwede ring pang rock pero mas bagay talaga siya sa hindi sobrang maingay na tugtugan.

I hope this helps. Mas oks talaga kung mapapakinggan mo in person or sa mga youtube videos though. :-D

hello, i'm quite new here but i wanna share some thoughts about these cymbals.

A custom crash-i've never played an 18" of this pero i'm using a 16" version nito sa church. it's fast and low pitched. it's quite loud din. i think the 18" is quite louder and lower in pitch.
A custom proj.-i once tried and 18" of this sa jB and compared sa reg. A custom it's higher in pitch and it has the gongy/belly sound. it's much louder i belive.
Z custom proj.-no idea
Z custom med.-16 lang din ung nagamit ko nito in the past and sa PMX un. personally i don't like the sound. it's quite too loud. not so musical.
K custom dark-ito lng ung meron ako. i have the 18 and it's my fave crash. it's perfect for live and studio situations. low pitched, fast, dark, and musical.

i play in church pala so most of the time rock/poprock/alternative ung genre namin. i personally like the A custom and K custom Dark.

GOOD DAY MGA CYMBAL MASTERS.  CAN I SEEK YOUR EXPERT ADVICE?
I JUST BOUGHT A ZILDJIAN SET 2ND HAND, THE RIDE HAS ZILDJIAN LOGO  BUT NO STAMP SEAL, HOWEVER THE HIHAT HAS NO ZILDJIAN LOGO AND NO STAMP SEAL, HOWEVER THE TEXTURE OF THE HAT AND THE RIDE MATCHES.  THE ROUND THINGY (DIMPLES) AT THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE CYMBAL IS THE SAME WITH THE HAT AND THE RIDE AS FAR AS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM IS CONCERNED.
The sound of the hat is very good , like of the vintage types.  though the hat is not that heavy, but the 20" ride is.
I really dont know what type of hi hat this is.  I dont even know if this is zildjian.  and what model.  I decided to seek guidance from the masters of this thread so that I would be enlightened.  Any information coming from you masters would be extremely appreciated to the highest and most respectable level.  Thanks , God bless and more power.

@jaeidn: bro, Sa church din ako tumutugtog and own
KC Dark Crash 17= Very musical and para sakin it blends well sa music namin especially pagdating ng solemn/worship songs.
AC projection crash- +1 sa response ni omnicloud7

On the contrary naiwanan ang hats ko, Sabian B8pro (part of my early set), Kaya plan ko sana magpalit.
Guys review naman din w/:

KC Dark Hi-hats
K Mastersound Hi-hats
K/Z (I like this hats pero yung naunang dalawa seems more versatile.)

sali ulit ako.:)
KC dark(14)-volume wise mejo mahina pero it sounds good. i like the bell and open sound. chick sound mejo mahina din. stick sound is dry . Hillsong United used K custom darks in their Look to You album.
K mastersound(14)-mejo katunog niya for me is A custom proj. pero less brillance. when it comes to volume, i think 'to pinakamalakas amongst the 3. low pitched.
K/Z-size 13 sounds better than the 14. for me versatile din nmn siya. compared to the two K/Z has a more focused open sound. high pitched. stick sound nmn nito is full bodied.

lahat yan nagamit ko in live worship services except the K mastersound. try mo din k light 15, kc session 14, and kc hybrid 14.25 if you don't like 13's. i own kc hybrid 13.25 and it sounds perfect for me pero di ko pa natry sa stage ung kc hybrid ko.:)

How about comparing KC Session Ride 20" v.s. KC Medium Ride, KC Dark Ride and K Ride?  :-)

Hello Zildjian users.
Finally, I give-in to K Custom Hybrid Hi-hats  :-D
Ngayon naman Ride upgrade.
Any additional info and help  :-D
My choices are K Custom Dark Ride or K Pre-Aged Dry Light Ride.
I'm looking for both washable and nice ping sound,
And sana magblend sa current set-up ko that is.

13.25 K Custom Hybrid hats
17 K Custom Dark Crash
10 K Splash
16 A Custom Projection crash (Will change change to KC Hybrid Crash soon)
18 Stagg DH China

TIA

is it true na mas maganda ang mga zildjian A's noong 60's compared to todays zildjian A's? AFAIK natigil ang method nilang bumping with a quincy drop hammer nung 70's dahil sa mass production mas gumamit na ng machines at nag rolling method nalang without hammering o kaya siguro konting hammering para mas mabilis ang prosseso. so i suppose na mas complex ang tunog ng mga zildjian A's from 60's? need your opinion guys. thanks.

60's may sound better coz of these factors.

1. Different structural grain caused by age-ing.
2. Different metal used before.
3. Hammering
