I got my 1st electric guitar last saturday, its a Peavey Generation EXP with a humbucker and single coil pickup setup. I have no idea whatsoever of what different kinds of "guitar effects" sound like. I need help! I want to know what the basic effects are as well as ones like the "Phaser", "Reverb", "Compressor", etc. and how it affects the sound of my guitar. I want to achieve a sound like Mike Einziger's of Incubus(pretty obvious). Thanks! :D

this is taken from incubus online page

"Effects-wise, the live arsenal’s signal chain runs as follows: Electro Harmonix Memory Man; Danelectro DRE-1Reel Echo; Jim Dunlop 95 wah; Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere; a pair of Boss PH-2 Super Phases(the first one is set to Mode 1 and the second one set to Mode 2); DOD FX13 Gonkulator Modulator; Boss RV-3Digital Reverb/Delay; EVH MXR M101Phase 90; DOD VFX 25B Envelope Filter; Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer; Boss OC – 2 Octaver; Digitech Multi-Chorus; and a Boss Tu-2 tuner"

very expensive...!!!

hope this helps! :-D

Yes, the FAQ thread is a big help. Anyway, since you're a fan of Mike, let's use their songs as reference.
-The intro for Redefine from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. used a DOD FX-75 flanger.

-Heard that effect from intro / verse of Pardon me @ Make Yourself record? That's the same flanger w/ a Boss RV-3 Reverb/Delay pedal, but live he uses his PH-2 set to mode I together w/ the RV-3.

-That part before the last chorus of The Warmth is another PH-2 set to mode II. At the first & second chorus of it, he used a MXR M101 Phase 90 Pedal (phaser as well but it sounds different). If you listen to it closely, he also used a Hughes & Kettner rotosphere (it's a rotary speaker emulator) on that part.

-The rotosphere is more obvious on the solo for Drive on the record.

-Mike used a DOD FX-25 Envelope Filter on the latter part of Rogue's solo.

-That c# riff for Stellar's chorus uses a Boss OC-2 octave pedal, he also used the RV-3 (only its reverb mode though) before its 2nd verse.

This isn't MIke's pedalboard but a fan's. :-D

Hope this helped & welcome to Philmusic! :-)

I have no idea whatsoever of what different kinds of "guitar effects" sound like.

i think he needs to familiarize himself with effects before we pour all that "techie" information.

try researching these basis effects muna:

1. distortion
2. flanger
3. phaser
4. delay
5. chorus

tapos for sound clips/demos you can dig demos on youtube.

when you are familiar with the basic effects and how they work, surely mas madali mag learn about the other effects and how to put them together as well.

This is a forum siggy.

Guys,

Lets take it easy on Einzigerfan. He just got his first guitar and we went "read this whole sticky"... It's up to 70+ pages already. I don't think he has the time to read all. Better here to ask than make a separate thread.

Einzigerfan, lets follow digitalcyco's advise and we will try to explain in our own layman's terms about several effects.

Distortion - this makes the guitar sound heavy or crunchy. When you hear rock and roll or the "heavy guitar" it comes from the distortion effect. This pedal is a staple and a "must".

Flanger - simply put, it is what you use to sound like the new wave 80's

Phaser - gives a pulsating character to the guitar tone. Sounds futuristic.  :-D

Delay - repeats your note in varying degrees such as time and pulse.

Chorus - it will sound like you have two guitars.

The tone from the combination of these pedals are endless and has been the source of many heated debates here.

Unless you have a bottomless wallet, go easy on buying stuff. Know what type of music you like to "play". When you know what you want, come back here and keep asking us to help you. Some of us will tell to buy this pedal or that pedal. None are wrong but not all are correct.

There are many skilled and helpful people here. If you have a specific question, use the search function, maybe there is a thread about it already.

Good luck and have fun with your new toy.

Ano pala yung guitar if you don't mind? Kasi minsan masmahal pa yung cost ng total makeover ng isang guitar sa worth ng guitar which is not practical, but since my sentimental value yung guitar na yun, you might instead disregard my advice  :-)

hindi ko alam kung anong model sya eh basta cort guitar n cream..

Bago mo i-repair.. yang pamanang guitar ba eh "WORTH-IT" i-repair? (no sarcasm or flame bro).

Kasi kung hindi naman kagandahan, baka mas mahal pa ang repair fee sa bagong gitara?!?

just my 2 cents. (no disrespect intended bro)

If you do, I'm sure you'll love it. I love mine. And plan to get around 2 or 3 more as backup.
