Title: The Flamenco/Spanish Guitar Players thread
Post by: sinackular on November 28, 2010, 02:01:59 PM
Hi guys! Was wondering if anybody else in this forum shares the same passion for me in playing flamenco guitar. Been playing blues actually for 6 years but when I was exposed to Paco de Lucia and the like I immediately sold my strat and bought a flamenco guitar. Been self studying for a year now and been going to the spanish flamenco events in instituto cervantes de manila. Hope to meet fellow flamenco players here.

Cheers!

I play a bit of flamenco, but it's the really basic stuff.  I play classical guitar mainly, but I do have a flamenco guitar.

my dad is a childhood friend of adolfo toyoda timuat. they don't really get together much now (since adolfo's in spain or touring), but we've been to his concerts here and we kinda hung out for a bit while he was here.
i really wished he would gift me with one of his adolfo guitars, pero asa hehe.

i was inspired to try my hand at spanish classical because of maestro timuat, but all i really managed to do was segovia's estudio sin luz and tarrega's gran vals (you know, the nokia ring tune).

maybe i should try learning again, start from simple pieces. at the very least it's a rich source of inspiration.

sinackular: does the instituto cervantes have like basic classes or something?

frustrated one here...

am attempting and trying really hard to incorporate flamenco in my playing using a jazz guitar... :-D different approach for different folks...hehe...

recommend some easy pieces and players to begin with who are not-as-technical-as-shredders-burn-thy-frets-pruwluwluluw...

if you want a different feel of flamenco mixed with hiphop and dub, try Ojos De Brujo :-D

my philosophy professor back in college gave me a copy of de lucia, yerbaguena and tomatito cds. they're really great! i wish i could play the guitar just like that, but i cant afford flamenco guitar lessons, i can't even afford a decent guitar! haha so i just settle with listening the music. =)

start ka nalang sa chipipay na guitars (classical or whatever), get some lessons from youtube and other ebooks, you already started the first part anyway  - to listen and listen...

humawak ako ng classical guitar nung isang araw, iba talaga yung feel...sarap din e...naisip kong bumili ng guitarra and practice flamenco, but then...priorities muna...and will listen to more stuff first before learning the craft...

actually flamenco guitars started out from cheap reject tonewoods because the gypsies couldn't afford decent guitars.  over the years umarte lang yung mga luthiers, nowadays you'll see them made with fancy grade wood with high prices.  if you get a chance to look at the really old flamenco guitars (like an old Torres) you'd see that it's not well made and the wood is not of good quality, may knots pa nga yung iba.  in fact if you look under the top the bracing is not well carved and there's lots of glue squeeze out.  but if you listen to a good player thru that guitar, man...hayup!  one of the reasons that i've concluded that the guitar is only but a small fraction of tone, its only an extension of the player.

so don't worry about what kind of guitar you have for flamenco.  just play!! :-)

but if you want to be technical about it, i think the only thing you need to look for in a flamenco guitar is that so called "dry" tone, with really fast note decay.  in other words walang gaanong sustain.  because flamenco playing uses lots of chords and fast strumming patterns it will sound muddy will a true classical guitar with all the tones overlapping each other.

and also, install a clear plastic adhesive for pickguards around the top for the fingertaps.  they're called "golpadeores" without them your guitar will scratch and will have damage.

don't let the guitar you have stop you from playing whatever you want.

good luck!

Tama, mas magandang expose mo muna tenga mo sa pakikinig bago humawak o magaral ng flamenco :-)

same here... i play classical as well... i play most of the time electric...  :-)

you're very welcome, janna!  :-)  think of it this way:  when you get better at flamenco the rest of us mere mortals would just stupidly stare and marvel at your music, and i'd bet we won't even notice the guitar you'll be playing. the music always comes first. the rest is just gravy hehehehe

same here... i play classical as well... i play most of the time electric...  :-)

i play classical because its fun for me.  also practical and logical,  i don't have a band anymore and i don't like setting up the electric gear for playing so i sold my electrics.  i play solo and i can't f#%@ing sing to save my life so the transition to classical was welcome step for me.  :-D  so now i'm down to three guitars: my classical, my flamenco (which is not really mine, i made it for my wife.  and its on a boat on its way here) and a steel string taylor.  i'm happy to say that i don't get GAS anymore hahahaha!!

but i do make guitars.  i made my classical and like i've mentioned, the flamenco.  i've brought tonewoods here and they are seasoning and i can't wait to make more!  its fun for me and its just a hobby.

i don't know how to post pics here (i've tried, pero palpak, is it because of my apple platform?)  but here's a few pics of my builds:

Awesome! nice to know there are fellow flamenco lovers here as well.

Silaw - Every time Instituto Cervantes hosts a flamenco event, more often than not the guest guitarist hosts a master class 1 or 2 days before the actual event.

Janna - Funny, I have a philosophy teacher too that lent me some flamenco material. His name is Mr. Raj Mansukani from DLSU :)

Paco Pena, Paco de Lucia, and our very own Adolfo Timuat. FLAMINGO is a bird, Flamenco is an art (form).
