Title: guitar w/ effects recording through PC
Post by: lucy_monostone on March 16, 2006, 05:04:30 PM
question lang po about recording your guitar with "effects" through a PC..

di ko pa nasubukan kase but will do this week. eto diagram na nasa isip ko:

guitar>cable>effect/pedal>cable>PC

will this kind of set up works?

and umm.. 2nd question, pano makka pagrecord ng feedback through PC recording???

thanks in advance~

yup pwede na. .

kung may amp ka na, pwede naman isaksak mo yung guitar with effects sa amp, tapos itapat mo yung mic sa amp (hanapin mo kung san pinaka ok yung tunog --- improvise nalang if you don't have a mic stand, basta wag mong ibitin yung mic sa amp, dapat nakatapat or slightly angled from the cone --- yung distance depende narin sayo --- pwedeng cm's or pwedeng inches or feet away from the amp).  after that saksak mo yung mic sa mic input ng sound card and then record the mic'd signals.  this is how i do it in the studio. if you find that doing it this way produces unwanted distortion, pwede mo ibaba yung volume ng amp, or ng mic in, as long as when you record the input is just below the red meter.

feedback can be recorded using an amp.  i don't know if this pc simulation will work: produce a sine wave with a frequency same as the one you get from amp feedback (experiment nalang) and then pass it through an amp simulator plug-in , fade it in, and cut it when the guitar parts begin.  komplikado.  better kung sa amp nalang, natural pa.

note that in order to record through to the PC, you will need a DI box or some kind of line-level interface. recording feedback through a PC might be possible if you are using an Amp Simulator program and then turn up the knob for the gain to mimic a cranked amp. just be careful you dont over saturate the signal and then record your track in the red; a feedback signal is different from digital peaking which is just not tasteful at all.

i've never tried processing a signal to mimic an over driven feedback signal so I can't recommend anything that would sound close to either an amp or an amp simulator.

The alternative for feedback, if you can't mic an amp, is to fade in a sample of the feedback. You will have to record both the guitar and feedback sample dry so that you can use ambiance processsing to make both blend into each other.

Puwede pong itap yung wire na connected sa souncard (line-in or mic) doon sa wire ng speaker --> para ka lang gumawa ng nag line-out sa amp mo..................

I've been waiting for someone to comment on this, pero sige na nga... I'll start.

You can burn up your soundcard using the above. Think of the current and power (in watts) going thru an amped speaker vs. the input requirements (usually milliwatts) on the line inputs of a soundcard.

You can all went here (12-F Angelito St. Paliparan, Sto. Nino, Marikina City) Tel. 9335260, to see how i record my songs and hear them all................... I am open......

And still doing that for more than a year.................
What's the big deal with 8 ohms anyway.................

Punta kayo lahat dito.............. welcome kayo lahat..............

hi emil. im always open to new stuff, lalo na if it will yeild great sounds whilst keeping my equipment happy and safe.

i don't think this particular technique is synonymous to micing an amp, though. it's just not the same thing.  the purpose of micing an amp is to capture the sound coming out of the speaker, and the way that sound interacts with the things around it (the speaker cone, the cabinet, the room, the mic, the mic's preamps, another amp, etc.). wiring the amp to the pc's soundcard bypasses everything else that comes after the signal has been amplified.

@ lucy, it's all a matter of taste and options. if you're brave you can experiment.  good luck.

Cool!........... It's just a matter of suggestion in my part and accordance to my experience............... I guess It's lucy's choice whether to folow it or not..........

the BIG deal with the 8 ohms is that it is providing a proper load for the voltage output of your speaker. the BIG deal with the 8 ohm, 4 ohm or 16 ohm output ratings you see on the back of speaker cabinets is that it means the difference between a working amp and a big paperweight that just takes up space.

what happens if you don't supply the proper voltage or worse, no voltage load such as an 8 ohm load requirement to an amp speaker out? your power section's transformer will become a giant capacitor with no way to dischanrge its voltage. if there is anything guitar players I know always warn first time amp head buyers is to never run the amp without a speaker out UNLESS you are engaging the "Recording-Out" option of the amp head if yours has one.  Transformers in amps, along with tubes, make up the heart and soul of an amplifier's sound. If you blow that - well, you'd better find an exact dduplicate of the amplifier or have to settle with an entirely different voiced amp.

  • record a feedback sample
  • and just add it as an additional track
  • kung gusto mong live ang recording.........use a mic nlng & then do you're usual stuff
  • condenser mic is much better.[/list:u]
Set you're usual guitar set-up then put the front-side of your guitar near the front of the amp.  Use a microphone (plugged-in to the sound card) to record the feedback.
yap! the ease of digital technology, that's why recording is a breeze now a days.  Unlike before, you'll blister your finger doing a billion takes before having the right track.  With this digital recording system, you can do anything posible...yeah!
