Title: All About Strat
Post by: markthevirtuoso on July 08, 2006, 05:23:38 AM
I was wondering kung anong difference ng Vintage Style Tremolo sa American Series Tremolo. Once, i borrowed my friend's American Standard tas napansin ko yung action nya ay napakababa. So i tried adjusting my Strat's (now sold though) classic trem way low but then i got fret buzz issues. I tried setting it up again to my normal setting which is the lowest possible action i could get without having such problems but then the difference with the other strat is a bit too much.  Does this has anything to do with it? Or nasa fretboard radius din? :?

..of course, other types of strat tremolos are welcome here as well. :D

sayang strat mo bro!!! papakuha ko sana sa friend ko na taga-abu dhabi eh, pero i don't think he's willing to spend 800 dirhams for me, hehe. plus, sa feb next year pa sha uuwi eh, hehe.

anyway, sa pagkakaalam ko, yung american standard bridge is the floating type. and, as we all know, yung classic trem ng strat is the... classic, hehe. regarding action, i think kaya naman ma-achieve yung lowest possible action sa kahit anong strat, may it be amstd trem or classic trem, or any trem for that matter. pero it's not all in the bridge or saddles eh, maybe kaya nag-buzz na frets mo nung binaba mo yung saddles kasi konti lang neck relief sa neck ng strat mo, or maybe the neck angle is a little shallow, etc. i don't think the fretboard radius has anything to do with it kasi pwede naman ma-compensate yung radius sa saddles eh. so yun, basta factors for me is, saddle height, neck angle, neck relief and fret levels. so yun.

then let's make this the official philmusic strat lovers thread, hehe.

i'm looking forward to acquiring another strat soon, hehehe. bahala na...

pero as for the bridge, i don't think i can ever use anything else. talagang the classic bridge is the only strat bridge for me, hehe.

Newer trem, more solid pieces as oppose to older thinner pieces? Affect in tone? Hhmm... dunno. I like both.

Strat lover... I think I can't call myself as one, hehe

it's the fretboard radius.  american standards have a flatter 9.5" freboard radius as opposed to the 7.25" radius of the  MIJ 50's RI strat.  a manner to compensate for this smaller radius on the 50's RI is to stagger your saddles to follow the radius of the fingerboard.

Baka naman dahil sa neck at frets kaya nagba-buzz pag ibinaba mo yung action. Kasi yung fretboard radius puedeng mai-compensate by adjusting the individual height of the saddles.

Not related to the buzz, mas makapal yung trem block nung lumang trem unit kesa sa mga bago.

Tama ba?

Ya, solid steel blocks and saddles ng american standard. The rest of the MIJ reissues probably have the "stamped" saddles which looks like sheet metals folded.

Napansin ko sa akin yong tick nang galing sa springs that holds the trem sa likod ng gitar. A little bit of KY Jelly   (or whatever oil/lubs you guys have, hehe) solves the problema,

As far as the tuning prob. Napansin ko sa older style trem, sometimes with my newer style trem too, out of tune ako dahil yong string ay hindi naka pasok fully and not set right sa trem block. I also notice na problema din sa nut. Minsan sumasabit when you hit the trem bar down and goes back in tune when you pull the bar up. Again, konting himas himas lang ng KY Jelly (or preffered lube of choice, hehe  ) and your good to go!

"masisikip" pala ang mga Strat, kelangan pa ng pangpadulas hehe.. inobserve ko yung guitar ko while playing around with the vibrato bar, and i think nasa nut nga yung problema. pano ayusin to without replacing it? lalagyan ko na lang talaga ng konting lubricant yung nut at springs sa trem? thanks in advance! :)

modern strats have 2 point trems..mas solid pati yung steel na ginamit compared to the classice ones...yung classic style trem, kinakalawang pati yung saddles.
the classic trems have 6 screws na directly naka screw sa body, so if you use the trem bar often, better use the modern strats.

me, a big fender strat lover... ive tried and owned teles, ibanez's, les pauls, sa strat pa rin ako in the end...although di pa ko nakakatry ng musicmans and PRS's, and the Parkers are nice to play.

just got my strat back after i had it refretted, refinished, and replaced the electronics(pups, knobs, switch).   sarap talaga strat lalo na pag super low ang action. mines a MIJ 50's reissue with bnew GFS pups.  i actually had to raise the action a tiny little bit.  parang ang daya sobra eh. di ako sanay.

i'm thinking of putting brass plates under the pickups because i read that it'll make it sound like a tele( almost siguro). i like the punch of the tele and the pickup combinations of a strat. kaya eto nag iisip ng ikakalikot. or pag tinamad at may extrang pera i'm thinking of getting a Dimarzio Red Velvet....or if maraming pera i might get three hahahahaha! what do you guy's think?

gusto ko din sana umorder sa stewmac ng kluson style locking tuners. laya lang ang  graphtec nut at sting retainers kulay itim.  hindi babagay sa gitara ko kasi dilaw na sya( dati black).  and i love the look of the round string retainer of the orignal. Ok ba yung LSR roller nut? would you recommend it?

oorder din ako eventually ng wilkinson vintage style trem with pop-in arm para wala nang ma lu-loose thread. talk about GAS!!!

Long live the STRAT!!!!

I have this Fender Floyd Rose Squier Series neck attached to a Mexican standard body. It is intonated and is always tuned right in the higher positions (near the headstock) But when I play the higher registers, (near the bridge) I find the tuning lowered so I have to bend it slightly when I play. This is very evident when playing Satriani's "Always with you, always with me" (tama ba ung title? heheh) when the verse is played an octave higher after the first chorus. I wonder if my strat's frets are not placed in the proper positions. I noticed this when I got another Strat that plays perfect. I think it couldnt be the setup because I setup my guitars and I have not experienced this problem in other guitars.

What could be the solution? Thanks for readin'
 Dito ko daw ipost!

Hey Its not the intonation?...

mga pare, educate me naman on the differences/effects of the tuners/machine heads na ginagamit sa Strat. to be honest, i'm really not very particular sa tuners; basta it can hold strings in tune, ayos na for me. usual kong nakikita kasi yung Schaller, Gotoh, Kluson and yung vintage Fender. anu-ano yung differences, pros and cons, etc. ng isa't isa? magandang discussion to since madaming Strat users dito with different setups :)

pare sa totoo lang, hindi ko alam, hehe. i think based on model and history lang kaya nagkaiba-iba ng tuners, hehe.

yung kluson kasi ginamit nila sa 50's and 60's strats. yung gotoh or "modern" tuners, sa mga modern na strats na, like yung standard strat. di ko lang alam yung schaller kung san sha, hehe.

ano kaya kung may waverly tuners for strat? hehe yung butterbean tuners, open back, hehe. masaya siguro tingnan yun.

yung kluson kasi ginamit nila sa 50's and 60's strats. yung gotoh or "modern" tuners, sa mga modern na strats na, like yung standard strat. di ko lang alam yung schaller kung san sha, hehe.

ahh.. nalilito kasi ako e. according to the parts list ng Strat ko, Schaller daw yung tuners ko. eh di ko naman ang pros and cons ng tuners kasi di ko talaga gamay ang tuner/machine head department e hehe. eto headstock ng Strat ko (for reference sa Strat with Schaller tuners):

Yun pala yun.eheh   I've never really found Gotohs appealing. :D

Gotoh makes a huge variety of tuner designs besides the oval and Schaller-style, like the locking Kluson-style tuners:

Kaso iba yung suksukan nung strings eh. That adds appeal to me. :)

Pero syempre, you can't go wrong with Gotohs, can you? :D

Hey Its not the intonation?...

sounds like an intonation problem to me. although once may kakilala ako nagka problemang ganyan- di matono sa higher frets kahit mukhang perfectly intonated (di nga lang strat ang gitara nya) at ang nadiskubre eh may problema sa nut.  ayun inadjust ang taas ng nut natono naman. di ko nga ma gets eh.

nyek, bakit iba yung suksukan ng strings sa gotoh kluson type? eh yung habol ko nga sa kluson na tuners yung string hole sa split top design nya. para at least pwede mo salpak dun yung dulo ng string. problema ko kasi sa mga gitara ko eh they tend to fray the inside of the gigbag, hehe. kahit may added protection na yung gigbag nafe-fray parin, hehe. at least sa kluson, kung nakapasok yung end nung guitar string, no problem, hehe.

the one on the left is a "fender" strat, MIJ, 2pc ash body, you've heard this before yada yada yada...

the one on the right is my new GAS result, a blackie fender strat (squier series) MIM, poplar body, maple neck, all stock. it has a warmer tone than its ash brother, hehe.

now time to look for a set of cheap good replacement pickups, hehe.

yuf, it's an MIM squier series fender strat. it's basically the same standard MIM strat except for the cheaper hardware. yung standard MIM strats kasi have a classic bridge, schaller tuners and alnico pickups, yung squier series na MIM naman have a cheaper bridge, cheaper "diamond back" tuners and ceramic pickups. pero basically the woods used are the same. i think mine's poplar. maputi sha eh, kahit black... huh? hehe. de i removed the neck to check out a crack i found in the body, luckily it was only a finish crack, hehe. pero the wood is very light colored, and medyo on the heavy side.

yup, mismo.

re: your inquiry on the quality of makes, i think...

1. MIA, CIJ (crafted in japan models are higher quality than MIJ)
2. with MIJ as a close second
3. MIM is a close third, sometimes second
4. MIK (with the exception of the protone series, which for me, ranks # 2 or 3)
5. CIC, MIC crafted in china are the most entry-level strats.

well, para sa akin, ibig lang sabihin ng CIJ e they were built during the late 1990's (starting from 1997, I think). i've seen no particular reason for them to be superior to the older MIJ's, aside from them being in better condition for the most part (kasi mas bago nga).

like yung mga modern na 50's & 60's reissue na binebenta sa ishibashi, alder na sila. pero they also have yung lower end basswood models. pero, ika nga, siguro depende din sa model. yung sabi ko lang jan eh according to what i know, hehe. and that is not much, hehe.

It's a maple(?) body with alder wings. so i guess pareho lang sila quality.  may economy version lang  sila talaga. same with your MIM- sa hardware lang ata. like unstamped saddles ceramic pups and smaller pots. :D

and for those of us who'll eventually upgrade their pickups, pots, etc.
the economy version is probably a bettr choice.

hope this helps

guys which one is the best bang for the buck. was thinking of getting my first strat since puro humbucker-equipped ang guitars ko..not really into strats pero liked rhcp, hendrix, srv type tones..so im thinking of at least getting a tone along those lines.. :D

http://ishibashi.co.jp/webshop/guitar/fender-j/st7258us.htm - though the one i tried was in yellow-white color

vs

http://ishibashi.co.jp/webshop/guitar/fender-j/st6885tx.htm

does the 50% price mark up justify the specs for the st68-85tx?

looking forward to any input/suggestion..thanks guys

ey nico, i have a proposal for you... pareho tayong naghahanap ng tortoise pickguard eh. you might want to check out www.guitarfetish.com they sell cheap guitar parts and pickups. best of all, they ship here to the philippines. for around $40 shipping. so kung may ka-hati ka sa shipping, it gets cheaper, gets? i don't have a credit card kasi eh, so we need someone who has one to order for us, tapos babayaran nalang natin.

so order tayo tig-isa na tortoise pickguard, some hardware and pickups. sobrang cheap lang bro, yung inorder ko na lespaul hardware, isang set, bridge, tuners and stoptail $60 lang inabot. kaya lang hindi ko sha pinaship dito since may uuwi. pero in our case, papa-ship tayo talaga.

so what say you?

what's the pros and cons of the bullet truss rod as against the normal truss rod and the truss rod located at the end of the fretboard?

sensya na sa newbie questions mga bro, this will be my first strat kasi if ever..i have my eye on a CIJ 70s reissue strat. tried searching the net pero wala ko masyado makita explanations sa truss rod types for strat..

thanks..
Title: Re: All About Strat

just got my first strat..nakakapanibago as i've always been using humbuckers..pasok na pasok sa blues and clean playing which is medyo mahirap sa LP for me.. :D

tried lots of strats today as i made the round of music shops..tried MIJ and CIJ na 50s/60s/70s reissue, 60th anniv standard strat, american series strats..di ko lang na-try yung mga custom shop since baka magandahan lang ako masyado e di naman abot budget ko.. :D

tried 57 ri with lace sensor, 68 ri with texas specials, 72 ri's with vintage us pickups, american series and the 60th anniv standard na MIM..

to my amateur ears, the 72's where trebly, clear, twangy while the 68 was middy, the 57 was ok for mid-to high gain pero di ko trip sa clean and suprisingly halos wala or wala talaga syang hum(not sure of the specs of lace sensors).

to my surprise, yung american series has the lowest output, ok for low to mid gain pero so so yung clean. the 60th anniv was a close second dito sa napili ko,, ok ang clean pati yung low to mid gain..

settled on this one since ito ung pinakagusto ko yung tone..

my entry to the club..

Title: Re: All About Strat
Post by: ice_man_jester on July 16, 2006, 11:29:24 AM
sir thortured, around 450 USD lang..sa singapore ko nakuha to..bagong dating na shipment..looks like special order by the shop since it has gotoh tuners(just a hunch)..also can't find any exact model from the ishibashi website with the exact same specs..

sir kulas, CIJ 70s reissue lang..not sure of the wood probably alder or basswood..pansin ko lang, it weighs nearly as heavy as the US strats with alder while yung ibang CIJ strats na na-test ko is really light(having been accustomed to LPs). from what i experience testing ibanez, magaan ang basswood..but for the price, id still think basswood to.. :D

Title: Re: All About Strat
Post by: ice_man_jester on July 16, 2006, 08:02:00 PM

kala ko wala na MIJ and pumalit yung CIJ, meron pa pala..mas mura ng konti yung MIJ as compared sa CIJ..sabi nung store owner the difference between the two is on the hardware part..ie pickups, tuners etc..yung mga MIJ was between 350-400 USD ang pricing nila..

hmm, may lite ash kasi eh. pero supposedly yung mga 70's reissue naka-ash yan. faithful to the 70's strat specs. 3-bolt neckplate yan diba? bullet truss rod? if the weight's on the heavy side, malamang ash yan. yung basswood kasi magaan eh. alder magaan din, hehe. pero if it sounds great, who cares about the wood diba? hehe. swak yung presyo nya at $450. those go for around 40-50k yen sa ishibashi eh. so ayos yan. great guitar man!

yup 3-bolt neckplate and bullet truss rod..ito yung nagustuhan ako among all the strats na na-test ko yesterday..

sarap pala ng strat..dito ko lang pala makukuha yung low/mid gain tones na gusto ko..mukhang pahinga yung LPs ko for the meantime..  :D

da best talaga strat, hehe. baligtad tayo, ngayon naman medyo naa-appreciate ko naman yung LP ko, hehe. pero the best ang strat sa "pogi jazz" tugtugan. yung 2 and 4 position plus some rich chorus... perfect for pogi jazz, hehe. yung LP is warm, hehe. which i like din.

Salamat, bro. Kaya lang ang Fender malinaw at snappy, ang p-90 parang mabuhok and growly almost like a humbucker. Really good for blues kahit walang distortion/overdrive sa chain. Ganito itsura ng P-90 gawa ng Gibson:

guys kelangan ko ng opinion niyo...alin mas maganda, yung nasa itaas o nasa ibaba (click the link medyo malaki yung pic hehehe). when i installed a washburn pickup on the bridge, my original pup covers wouldnt fit. so i had one pup that was black and everything else was white. then i recently obtained black pup covers for my mid and neck + black knobs. now which looks better? my current pickguard is white btw. guys kelangan ko ng opinion niyo...alin mas maganda, yung nasa itaas o nasa ibaba (click the link medyo malaki yung pic hehehe). when i installed a washburn pickup on the bridge, my original pup covers wouldnt fit. so i had one pup that was black and everything else was white. then i recently obtained black pup covers for my mid and neck + black knobs. now which looks better? my current pickguard is white btw. (and thats not my guitar though thats how my guitar's looks like).

mas gusto ko yung nasa baba. i don't like white pickguard tapos black pickups and knobs eh, hehe. pero i like the opposite, black pickguard and white knobs and pickups, hehe.

question lang, san mo nakuha yung pics? or site ba yan which allows you to model guitars?

Hi guys! Where can i learn more about my strat? I bought it brand new in 1996. It has the sunburst body with maple neck and fretboard. There's a 50th Anniversary decal on the back of the headstock and it's made in the USA. I tried taking a few lessons back then but i eventually decided to go back to classical guitar... well, more like church music :)

anyway, is the strat a keeper? is this something worth passing on to one of my kids one day? perhaps one of them will seriously get into it? Or, should i trade it in for a better classical guitar? hmmm... or should i try playing her again? medyo matanda na kasi ako...

it depends.  if i remember correctly, there were some strats sold in 1994 that had the decal but were not the anniversary model.  and i think they came out with more than one anniversary model -- deluxe, limited edition, etc.

i'd keep it though regardless of potential future value.  strats will always be an all-time-favorite in my opinion.

Yong top nila e hindi solid flame maple as opposed to the real PRS or Tom Anderson na makikita mo ang continuation ng wood grain to the top side of the body. Para bang veneer lang ang top. Yes fat strats have  humbucking bridge pickups and double fat strats have humbuckers for neck and bridge pickups...

Yes you can fit any standard size humbucking pickup to your guitar tho for EMG's baka may kailanganin na adaptor para sa screws pero madali lang yun yakang yaka na yun ng mga luthiers natin...

Ang major downside nyan is wala nang in between strat tone ang guitara mo kc walang middle pickup and siempre iba talaga ang sound ng single coil so hindi na talaga strat ang sound nyan...

Pero ok din yun kung rock naman ang togs mo kc humbuckers are quiet pag sa distortion and siempre mas malaki ang sound...

do squier double fat strats use f-spaced humbuckers or standard sized ones? i know, it wouldnt make sense to use f-spaced humbuckers, but it is "fender" squier.

Title: Re: All About Strat
Post by: Taoistguitarist on July 19, 2007, 09:16:28 PM
mas may emphasis ang basswood sa mids dahil malambot na kahoy sya so hindi nya masyado binabalik ang bass and treble. I like basswood with pickups na hindi masyado ma mids. :-D
Title: Re: All About Strat
Post by: bluenote on July 20, 2007, 08:48:59 AM
Not to spoil your fun basswood lovers but we cant generalize on this... Basswood is a flat sounding tonewood. Alder on the other has more pronounced mids... Pero d lang naman kc bodywood ang nag dedefine ng tone ng isang guitar there are other factors to consider like Neckwood, Hardware and Pickups. Kaya as Ive said chempo chempo talaga...
Ako I've had quite a few strats over the years from every price range and have found that kahit ano pang kahoy ang ginamit mapa Alder, Ash, Poplar or Basswood hindi parin garantisadong tutunog ng maganda may pangit parin at maganda...
Mike Landau - Tyler/Suhr/Fender - Alder body
Scott Henderson - Suhr - Alder Body
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Fender - Alder Body
Eric Johnson - Fender - Alder Body
Jimi Hendrix - Fender - Alder Body

i'm not a basswood lover bro but i don't hate it either :-D. I'm just pointing out what's good for basswood( the flat sounding tonewood as you have described it). And wala namang nag generalize men :-D  Alam naman nating lahat that it's just part of the tonal equation. Some people actually want basswood over others even if they have other tonewoods at their disposal. Go figure. 8-) John Suhr even mentioned that for him Basswood with a maple top is probably the Holy Grail of tone.

But alder is great for strats. medyo magaan sya compared to northern ash. Sarap nga nyan for punchy upper mids. But for complex overtones, i'd go for Hard Ash. Ok din ang mahogany for strat, i had one before and it sounds meaty without needing overwound pickups.

Basswood pala 'to. All the while akala ko alder.
Anyway.. Kumusta ang tunog? Description please.

Wow. Lots of info on basswood overnight. Thanks sa replies.
I found a website through Google before.. it had soundclips of a basswood and alder-bodied strat. Great comparison nga eh. (He just transferred the neck between the basswood & alder bodies). I noticed that the basswood body had a warmer tone. The alder body had more 'punch'. I'll try to look up the site later.

Yun nga, hindi garantisadong maganda talaga ang tone ng guitar if it's alder, ash or whatever. The sad thing is, I can't seem to find a basswood or alder-bodied strat dito sa Pinas that I can try out (and fits my price range). Either oorderin pa sa Japan or sa US. :-(
(I'm talking brand new. Hehehe.)

Also it has cast stainless steel saddles.

yeah hanep nga ang partscasters kaso may risk na it might sound like crap. you never know how it'll sound until u put it all together. but that's actually part of the fun.
I have another project strat. gagawin kong parang 62ri with konting variations. am std 3-pc alder yung body. la pa pics eh but i'll be sure to post pag tapos na, hopefully before the end of the year.

by the way mga bros, eto ang dream strat tone ko...

if the link doesn't work, just search for "vibrolux" on youtube.
what i like best about this kind of tone is that it's simple, straightforward, and honest.

hey kuya bobby! musta na? lupet yang strat mo!  :-)

this is a repost from my original post. thanks, sir PHIL. :) Ganda ng mga strats dito!!!   :-D

greetings to every axe-wielding master here. i'm a newbie here and at a stage in my life wanting to pursue my dream--- to own and play a Fender Guitar. i have a few questions that are in dire need to be answered.

i'm thinking of buying (and hoping to be able to learn to play it) a fender strat. what's the best deal: Fenders that are MIJ, MIM or US? i read in a post that MIJs are getting higher in value in recent years. i want to know why.  of course, the US ones are so expensive and i want to know the difference in terms of sound. which is better? what are the qualities in a FENDER GUITAR that i should look for?

i'm learning to play the blues and i have a used squier strat that i bought for practice. could you also give me tips on how to play the blues? suggested gear (ams, pedals, etc.)?

i'd appreciate your posts, masters. thanks and more power-chords.

Hello Itchybrain,

US Fenders have better hardware and has traditional tonewoods like alder and ash.

Japanese Fenders usually have zinc blocks and use basswood for the body though some

high end Jap Fenders like the jap market only Japan Vintage series also use alder and ash.

You will find that some japanese fenders do sound better than the US ones but this is not

always the case. There are good and bad guitars in every pricerange, Having a US made

Fender does not guaratee a good tone. There are no guarantees for finding good guitars you

just have to weed out the bad from the good regardless of brand, where it was made, how

old it is or what pricerange it belongs too.

Sir Mark, the luthier here can make my '57 strat have a an ultra-low action without buzzing by setting the neck in such a way that it almost doesn't have a relief(hairline relief daw) and setting the saddle radius to 10". Yun nga palang fretboard radius ko ay 7.25 radius. Btw, ang galing ng kanta ng banda niyo s totoo lang. :-)

Guys sino na naka-try ng Fender SCN's(Samarium Cobalt Noiseless)?yung stock pickups ng bagong American Deluxe.May dilemma ako whether to keep the stock electronics on(the S-1 switch is really promising) or to slap in my EMG DG20 set.I'm using the EMG's now with my 60th anniv Highway1/Am Series Partscaster and it sounds nice and the two switches included makes it a whole lot better. Ang pangit pa ng reviews ng SCN's sa harmony central.BTW the EMG DG20 consists of three SA's, an EXG and SPC switch.I'll probably get the guitar by september and I'll make sure that I post it here hehe.

Some EMG Pups use alnico magnets as well...as for which is more "strat" than the other...I really can't tell...Better ask Steve Lukather and David Gilmour on which sounds "strater", stock alnicos or their EMG SA's.

I got an entire strat from them by parts hehe.except for the electronics which I got from a different store. Oh yeah they offer shipping to the Philippines, just be ready for intense shipping costs and taxes, but I guess it's worth it since if they said the item is in mint cond, it really is plus the packaging is nice you don't have to worry about any damage or casualties caused by shipping..

thanks ogie.

d tortose shell pickguard can really do wonders for your strat's look. hehe. gfs lang yan. around 900php.

yung pickups nyan yung binebenta kong Alnico pro 2 set, which i decide to keep nalang.

fernandes revival strat yan pero i like it more than other fender mijs na naksabay nya kaya sya ang tinira ko.  :-D

Sir I love that look!
I want a totoise shell pickguard also san mo yan nabili ano yung gfs? Ang mura naman 900 lang pramis?

gfs products are available at guitarfetish.com

ogie, mas maganda and makapal yung orig fender tortoise pickguard. mas more on brown ang shade. medyo pricey. allparts ok din. settled for the gfs muna. yun lang available eh.

how does the Fralins Vintage hot compliment the Fender strat?

tnx sir. Actually, yung 57 naibenta ko n since nakuha ko yung SRV at ndi ko n natanggal yung fralins kasi wla nko time maghanap ng ibang pickups n pambenta with it. But I got to use it extensively.

I'd say maganda talaga fralins. Yung vintage hots p lang nattry ko s pickups nila pero I have a feeling it's their best set. It's as advertised and yung review s guitar player nung 90s is very accurate. I was choosing between suhr v60s and the fralins vintage hot again yesterday and I figured s fralins n lang ulit muna ko since ntry ko n yun ng matagal. I got to try v60s pero matagal n dun s tyler strat ng kakilala ko dito. I hope this helps. :-)

Tweed case ba yan or molded plastic?

Just read on! :)

My take: research on the year and make of the strat body, neck and other parts whether an MIA or an MIJ. Kung MIJ, which i'm really a big-ass fan, try goin' to www.21frets.com or google MIJ Fender Stratocaster.

I hope this helps. Happy Fender Strat hunting!  :-)

yup, mismo.

re: your inquiry on the quality of makes, i think...

1. MIA, CIJ (crafted in japan models are higher quality than MIJ)
2. with MIJ as a close second
3. MIM is a close third, sometimes second
4. MIK (with the exception of the protone series, which for me, ranks # 2 or 3)
5. CIC, MIC crafted in china are the most entry-level strats.

i say MIA are a tid bit better than MIJs. not worth the buck though.

Normally, it will fit.  If you have 11 holes in your pick guard and you put an 11 hole replacement PG, it will fit.  I think there is a pickguard which is the one installed in the 70s Strats that has a different placement of one hole.  Otherwise, I think all pickguards for Strats whether Squire or Fender are interchangeable.

like any other product, yes it will wear out in due time especially if you use the selector like i do. I flick it like crazy pero matagal naman. ive never changed a p up selector iun my entire life and the oldest strat i have is 9yo, so that tells alot.

i think string trees just help out in putting strings on the few last posts. because of the height of the nut , stringing the last post without trees will become tiresome and troublesome due to slippage (the coil you made will just slip to the top of the post and you're back to square one). my opinion

sound wise it's just the same as the other am std for my ears, just alittle bit sustain. the look and feel of the guitar kinda makes you think it's better than it's predecessors and has mojo, but, again in the end, its better try it yourself first.

:?quality?

in general, para sa akin, price at ang "made in USA"-tag lang ang pinagkaiba. it's also the same with the mexican version.

Hey Its not the intonation?...

bro intonation adjustment sagot jan, given that the string height and neck relief is ok. i suggest get a tuner, tune the open string, then press at the 12th fret. pag flat, loosen the screw of the saddle (that will make it move away from the bridge), if sharp, tighten (saddle will move towards the bridge). tama ba ko guys? then tune again to get it perfectly in pitch, both open and 12th fret. tamad na ko magback read kung nasagot na eh.

:| I think the MIA standards would've looked better if they stuck to the modern look.. may series naman sila na vintage-styled eh.

they just went back to the basics, they listened to their loyal fenderooligans and the result nga ay ang 2008 am std...

imo they should have just made a new guitar line for those design alterations...
the am series was always been about innovation, experimenting in the unknown to achieve something iconic,

the new one is a back to basic one, which i think is good guitar pero sana gumawa nalang sila ng ibang line of series guitar for such a model. there's nothing new about the new am std. yung 2 point trem at huge fret lang ata ang nag stay. nothing modern about it anymore

dapat ginawa nila katulad ng vintage series, it has the hotrod vintage series which ads modern upgrades to the vintage series.

the MIM classic player series kicks the am std's pwet in terms of hot rodding the tele and strat. and it's cheaper.

it used to be that the highway one series was the "budget" mia strat, it also supported the vintage specs except for the  finishing, but nevertheless, i think the mia strats before and now still look and sound nice  :-D

what's the difference between 250k and 500k pots?

250k pots give a darker tone.. it compliments the single coils on a strat really well.
500k pots of the other hand, are brighter.. that's why they're used more with humbuckers.

if you're using the "classic" strat bridge, try mo i-adjust yung saddles para mawala yung buzz. also baka lubog na yung nut ng aratig mo... kung hindi rin lang shread ang tugtugan mo, i suggest na taasan mo yung saddles sa bridge ng strat mo bro. ika nga ni Jeff Beck, "the higher the action, the heavier the gauge, the better the sustain!" ever wonder why SRV got that killer tone? he uses a gauge 13 on his axe & the action is like 1/4" fm. the fretboard... allen wrench lang katapat nyan bro... good luck!

help  :-D

wrong grammar.

anyway for nong's question, I found switching from passive to active pickups a better solution to eliminating unwanted strat noise. tried shielding before but it didn't work for me. there are also "noiseless" single coils that you can try chief or those "rails" hehe.

sorry if i posted this here, pero im having intonation problems mga sir eh.

what am i supposed to do pag todo na yung saddles pero flat parin ako? and parang hindi sumusunod sa intonation? yung HIGH E string ko lang ang ganito. yung ibang strings, ok naman, sumusunod sa intonation if i adjust the saddles. pero sa HIGH E string, parang hindi sumusunod even if i adjust the saddles.. pero gumagalaw yung saddles. naka-todo na nga ngayon eh, but sadly.. its still flat by like 15 cents! huhuhu

naka strat modern 2pt trem bridge ako mga sir, and yes, i know basic bridge intonation.

has anybody encountered this? ano kaya ginagawa sa ganito?

and yeah i dunno if nakaka-affect ito, pero napansin ko yung HIGH E string ko, significantly mas mababa ang string height compared sa other strings..

hala.. what to do.. what to do.. luthier na ba ito mga sir? :?

If you say your strings are rusted already, that must be it. I remember even having major intonation problems ON A NEW SET OF STRINGS which was remedied by putting another fresh set. Baka string/s lang yan

bro, luthier na yan dapat noon pa. sensya na ha, ganun kasi ako, ayoko pangunahan eh, it might cause more damage/problem kung ako gagawa or i may/may not do it correctly. in my case, in acquiring a guitar (bnew or used) i bring to jun castro and have him set it up, which he already knows my personal specs (like low action, 9's na strings etc.) and he explains why/what should be done in special cases.

bring it to your luthier and let the experts do it and the end result is 'worry free'.

my two cents worth lang bro..

i think it's around 2 lang. low action ako brad, i only have a tape measure here and i measured after the set up.. i could be wrong. basta alam na ng luthier ko.

i just dont understand why other people bring their guitars to the luthier kapag sira na.  :? or some say "bakit ko dadalin guitar ko, di pa naman sira..", my personal opinon, to get the most of your instrument, bnew or pre-owned, it must be checked and set-up for optimal & quality performance.

btw, clarify ko lang ha na hindi action ang problem ng guitar mo bro, m just making it clear, i've just stated an example of my set up. hehehe..

lovecore: talaga, new set of strings sumablay sa intonation? what strings were you using then? im using GHS EJ signature 0.11's, for about mga 4 years na. ngayon lang ako nagkaproblem
