You think a Canon T1i(has 1080p) and just a Sony Vega Pro 9.0 can get close to the stuff you posted?

There's an obvious advantage using HD (Hi Def) over SD (Standard Def) and, definitely, your Canon T1 has better resolution than the SD videos I posted. Basta, always take into consideration where it will be shown (internet, theater, tv, etc.) before shooting. If you want better resolution, go Hi Def. In terms of post production, any video editing software naman ok kung sa internet lang ang output. If the software can handle HD, betterer, broher. My mantra is simple, the cameras and editing machines are only tools. The one operating these tools is the most important part of the workflow.

Some of the video trailers I posted were shot and edited using high end equipment but, according to Aya Yuson, "wala sa pana yan. asa Indian." Digs?  :-D

Sorry, Phil, nadedelay. Busy lang, bro.

As promised.

Part 1: Cinematography Treatment for Painthings (Experimental Full Length, 75 mins., DV/SD)

Direction: Jon Red
Cinematography: Ogi Sugatan
Camera: Panasonic DVX100 24P

Painthings is an experiment in narrative storytelling. It's a story about a filmmaker's struggle to make a documentary film about a painter who only exists in his mind. The use of DV/SD for this film is more of an economic than an aesthetic reason. It's a self produced film by most of us specially for Jon Red, Filipino Pictures (Francis Magalona's video Production house) and us, the filmmakers. So it's obvious that we turn to our available equipment.

For the interior day scenes, high contrast lighting was used because I want the film to have more drama. I used uncorrected tungsten lights on daylight to have that late afternoon, warm glow. A couple of blondies (2K) and redheads (850watts) were all we could afford back then. Any higher, we'd be broke as MC Hammer. For night scenes, I just balanced the camera to tungsten to maximize the use of my lights. And for a reason that I can't recall right now, my gaffer (cinematographer's assistant) forgot to bring color correcting gels for my lights. Inis.

Available light was used in all exterior day scenes. With the occasional use of a styro board for close-ups.

One interesting trivia when shooting one particular shot was when I used the light from a cell phone (it was an Nokia N92, if my memory serves me right) to give detail to the lens of the video camera the actor was using. It was a close up but I have no small light available, even a flash light, to give the video camera's lens some glare thus giving it depth (and character!) since the video camera in the movie is an integral part of the story. It only shows that necessity is the mother of all inventions.

Camera mounting was done hand held verite style.

*next: Cinematography of Koro.

Sorry for the follow up, guys. My sched's been hell lately. So here goes the second installment:

PAR 2: KORO
Music Video
Artist: Greyhoundz feat. GLoc 9 and Francism (RIP)
Format: 24P, SD
Camera Used: Panasonic DVX100
Director, Cinematographer and Co-Editor: OGi Sugatan

When the boys of Greyhoundz asked me to make a music video for their then new album, they told me to just express my thoughts and ideology about what I think of the song: no rules, no compromise, just pure expression. The music is all about being in the dark with all the crap the society (and kapwa pinoys) give, I  thought of the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind in a heartbeat. I pegged the "erasing the memories" segments inside Joel's (Jim Carrey) mind as a jump-off point where just one spot-key light was used to convey an "inside the mind" visual treatment. It's like "the light at the end of the tunnel but the difference is that light source isn't at the end but rather following the character/s.

Here's a visual reference:

I used a handheld Omni light, a 350 watter light source wrapped with a diffuser called a 216 (it's like a tracing paper but now quite. really used specifically in pro lighting) and "*snooted" it with a black cartolina in all of the interior shots. Now, to make it more dramatic, I used smoke and backlit it with a 2K Blondie. Since it's self-produced (by Greyhoundz and my production house, Brass Knuckles), obviously funds were low, instead of using a smoke machine (which is really expensive rented) we made smoke guerilla style: uling (coal) + baby oil. :-D Effective but not lung friendly. We have to get out and clear the smoke with a huge electric fan to be able to set up for another shot.

All exterior shots of the dreadlocked man crawling were all done guerilla style. :-D

I graded the video in post. Saturated bright colors too. Almost monochromatic. Almost. On the interior shots. As for the look of the crawling man's sequences, I chose to make it look like an old Super 8mm film which i liked so much. :-D

Though I really liked the lighting and visual treatment, the most interesting thing about this video, if you notice, is the syncopation of the video to the audio. I shot the video in normal speed (29.97 fps is the standard frame rate for video) while speeding up or slowing down the music on playback. Meaning, during the shoot, the singers (or rappers) perform the song parts in different speeds so that when I edit-in the video to the audio in post, it'll have that weird jerky effect while still being synced. Noice. At that time variable shooting rate in video was not yet possible unlike these days so i did all the "daya" in post.

We were lucky that Sienna College allowed us to shoot in their halls and "vandalize" on the walls. Sadly, the cleaning up took longer that the shoot itself. Haha. :-D

There you go. God bless you all.

* A Snoot is a contraption that you put in light sources to have that "spot" effect.

hey baldo! yeah we still remember that incident. :D you were corresponding with Louie dati diba?

1. yes this was recorded in Tracks.
2. we used a Nikon D90 with varying lenses. may ibang parts where we used a Canon Mark II (i think). can you spot the difference? :-D noticeable, actually.
3. yan ang hindi ko alam pero i vaguely remember hearing something like "Vegas" dun sa nag-edit.

haha no thanks, we have a copy of that track (pre-mastered, i think). parang mali ata yung desisyon namin dati to make it sound like a live performance. :D i won't go too far to say that it was a scam, but we all learn hard lessons. haha

PROJECT: Baconator TVC
CLIENT: Wendy's
AGENCY: ASPAC
PROD HOUSE: brass knuckles, inc.
POST HOUSE: DigitalQi
DP: OGi Sugatan

camera and lenses: Canon 7D w/ 85mm and 50mm primes, 70-200mm f2.8L
Shot on *Green Screen Chroma with Kino Flos and Blondies.

TIPS:
1. When shooting against a chroma background, make sure you light the chroma cloth evenly for maximum effect otherwise, magagalit sa inyo editor. :-D I usually light mine with KinoFlos if the budget permits it kasi medyo mahal. KinoFlos are fluorescent type lights with a soft light effect of surfaces and with a steady boost of its ballast eliminating flickering. Regular fluorescents have the tendency to flicker. Hindi lang halata sa human eye but the camera notices this. Ito ang lighting secret na pang make-up (face) and food. If you have no money to rent or buy this, you can use regular fluorescents basta brand new. Test before you use.

2. Make sure the subject won't cast a shadow on the chroma cloth.

*Chroma Shooting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroma_key

I'm not familiar with the movie maker software but as far as post prod is concerned, there are many factors like the codec or the videos being compressed usually get downgraded. Meaning there is a drastic resolution loss from the original master footage. Say, you shot it on DV (or even HD) and you convert it to a lower format, it usually does lose it's brilliance. That's my one cent. :) I hope it helps.

Try switching to a different editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro or anything that can make a video output with at least the same as your SD input.

I use Avid Media Composer 5, Final Cut Pro Studio and Adobe Premiere Pro.

RE indie films, maraming workshops na naglipana ngayon. Just research kung sino mga facilitators. Try UP Film Institute, Mowelfund Film Institute and Filipino Pictures. Google is our friend. :)

hi Ogie :)  nope not the shrink ray.  i shot this with a cheap 24p point and shoot camera, my favorite film making equipment as of the moment :)  it has this "miniature" effect built in, and instead of doing a manual timelapse with a regular dslr, i opted for the run and gun way of doing it.  i'm loving not thinking so much about the technicals and just shooting on instinct.

I know no [gooey brown stuff] about videography, but i think the grips(key/dolly), mounts and rigs plays a big part in getting the holywood feel. Aside from lens and postprocessing.

yes those stabilizers and other stuff malaking bagay talaga to get that "Cinematic" look but theres this distinct look talaga na pang movies eh. as in ibang iba pag raw videos, iba din yung post processed sana may mag post dito ng tutorial ng sarili nilang cinematic style ng video.

@ sir niggah what is magic bullet looks?

Sir I doubt that you'll obtain that cinematic feel with your video recorder. The cinematic feel you're looking for should have a framerate of 24p. Your Agfa has 30p.

yes i understand that side, but i am trying to do is manipulate my clips sir. :) thus seeking advices from peeps who have tried some techniques if not some plug ins/softwares to get this "feel" and effect

you can always convert it to 24fps, although some movements might look a bit weird.

video looks way sharper than film, so what my editor used to do when we shot films with an EX3, is that she'd duplicate the image, overlay, and lower the opacity to look softer. very subtle difference, but its there.

lights are also softer on film, and i noticed another editor of ours adjusting them with "glow" and "bloom", i think.

turning the saturation down a bit, and adding a bit of grain helps too. i'd recommend Magic Bullet, but i usually avoid using it because its a bitch to render.

haven't tried vegas yet but premiere would do, kaya lang pagka pinatungan mo na ng effects yung videos, gumagapang na, try cyberlink powerdirector, combine cut all your videos here, then color correction / mojo on premiere, upgrade your memory to max too, magkano na lang ram ngayon

for those video junkies and gurus here please help me, i am compiling video clips of my wife, she is giving birth soon and i wanna make a short movie clip out of these random videos i take everyday.

prob is i am having difficulties sa pag achieve nung cinematic look sa isang video.

i am using a full hd 1920x1080p compact video recorder (agfa eclipse explorer) fixed lens F2.8 5.5mm

please help me out thank you.

i have some trial clips and will upload it soon.

btw i am using vegas pro 10

agfa eclipse explorer and nikon d90

Try putting a letterbox over the video. it creates a "widescreen" cinematic look to the video. Just do a quick search on "cropmarks" or "Filmcrop" Try searching "How to add a cinematic look to videos" on YouTube. I forgot if that's the exact title.

Also, like what others said, try adjusting the color of the raw videos to a softer, less saturated one. You can also try some simple "color grading"

 :)

EDIT: And why did I post a comment on an inqury 2 years back??? Forgot that I was just backreading.

Questions:

I'm curious.

i just know you can't post them on YouTube or Vimeo. they're going to remove the video or just remove the audio if you're caught. happened to me with a film years back.

if you've got no plans uploading it, then go nuts. fuck copyrights. but if you want to be a professional, just buy the music license. they're around $10-100 for personal use.

i remember requesting for a specific song to be our SDE music sa videographer namin. di daw pwede unless were willing to shell out some cash to pay for the rights. around Php 2500 yata yung song.

Pwede yun. As long as na you guys will just play it in a private event. Ig you're going to publish it on web, then yun, kelangan mong bayaran yung royalty. But for a same day edit, pwede. We do it all the time.

As far as i know, all music that we used on our wedding rakets are all copywrited material. If the clients were going to upload it in the internet, it will be their responsibility to pay for the royalty and compliance of the music that'll be used. So, if they're going to upload their, for example, prenup on youtube and facebook, then they must pay for the royalties. But nowadays, clients won't do that, lalo na sa fb. Wala naman daw kasi sumisita. So we say ok, basta it will be your responsibility pag nagka copyright issue.

wow late reply ako ahaha

well we all know na hindi forever pang private viewing yung SDEs. sometime in the future, someone in your family will have that itch of uploading stuff on the net for public consumption. and thats when the hassles of recording companies running after you starts.

so its better to be safe. pay in advance or settle for an indie artist whos willing to lend his/her/their song for your SDE.

saw a videographer friend in fb holding a DJI Osmo.

curious, i went to their site and checked the unit. feeling itchy in wanting to start a short film making hobby, i went on to check how much it costs

anyway, nag check pa ulit ako online for DIY stuff and found some nifty sites that share DIY videography equipment.

For production, it is best that you tag along with someone you know. Production takes more than a day, kahit viral videos lang ang pino-produce, pwede pa rin kayong abutin ng kinabukasan. But that's a better exposure, than what they would tell you inside the classroom.
In a prod scene, you'll learn not just the technicalities but also how to deal with different practices: PR, Agencies, Lights, Cameras, Equips, Directors and ADs, set design, stylists, DOPs, Actors, Proj Mgrs, Logistics, etc. It's a unique experience talaga.

But the prod scene is slowly evolving. Right now, the industry is starting to get rid of the agencies, and just go directly to the companies who has everything in their portfolio. Wedding videographers are starting to eat a significant chunk in the industry. So maybe, if you know someone who has done wedding videos before, most likely they have corporate accounts right now. You can start there :)
