Overrated?

Kurt Cobain!

Imagine how many times he was featured on the cover of guitar magazines. Several articles were written about him especially after he died. Worse, the "solo" of Smells like Teen Spirit was included in Guitar World's Top Guitar Solos of all time! huh?!

mas madami ako alam na kanta ni kurt kesa ni santana, evh or michel angelo batio.cno mga yan?

Worse thing is that Kurt Cobain is worshipped because he was "the messiah" that saved us all from the 80's glam/pop/hair metal!

Excuse me while I listen to Winger! 80's glam/pop/hair metal rules! heheheh  :-D
the point is, he sold millions of records w/ his own song writing ability  ...  priceless  :-)

di naman siya well known dahil sa guitar skill niya eh, dahil sa song writing niya kaya siya sikat  :-)
onga. a lot of people will probably agree he's a brilliant songwriter. so will all these magazines please stop putting him in those "top guitar solos" polls?!?! start a "brilliant songwriters" poll and stick him there where he belongs.

brilliant songwriter, yes. guitar player (when he's not stoned out of his mind), mediocre at best.

or maybe compositions/song writing is something critics are looking for in a guitar player...you cannot discount the fact that kurt may have the easiest or most basic chords for a grunge band but no one else thought of making that easy song...

it's just me, he is a brilliant song writer but not really a great guitar player

yngwie

yes

yngwie malmsteen

yeah he's fast and he plays classical licks over metal, but it's the only thing he does, over and over and over and over

he's talented yes

but one of the greats, not really

I'd go out on a limb and risk flaming and say that EVH is overrated as well.

he's influential no doubt.

but I don't really feel it with his playing

Randy Rhoads took EVH's style and did more with it than EVH will ever do.

*sabay takbo*

Everyting Kurt did on that sophomore album was ANTHEMIC. Sure it was not the most technical licks, speed numbing runs of scales but still those leadlines were so melodic, so urgent that it resonated thruout the whole of that GENERATION Xers.  I havent started on the riffs that he wrote as well.

For goodness sake if your gonna ask me what riff blew me away during my lifetime...............TEEN SPIRIT....nuff said.

some hair band guitar players just really can't accept the fact that they were overthrown(w/ their boutique gears and their rich rockstar lifestyle) in the mainstream by some guy wearing jeans sneakers using BOSS stompboxes and [gooey brown stuff] stratocasters  :-D that's why they keep on flaming kurt cobain, soundgarden and pearl jam.

instead of burning some fat, sitting around, drinking beer, wasting money and start working on new songs, some of them keeps on talking.

di nila matanggap na laos na sila tapos na oras nila and kumikita yung mga seattle bands pagkatapos ng panahon nila.
weather weather lang yan hehe

buti pa Bon Jovi still rocking

less talk, more work

Nirvana had the opportunity and the songwriting chops to break the status quo.  I think at the point that Nirvana came out, people like Kirk Hammett went on record to recognize the new order from Seattle.  Ironically, it would be grunge's continued sonic tributes to Black Sabbath that would preserve and keep metal from dying out and eventually coming back with a vengeance with the likes of bands like Pantera (who were pretty much underground back in the mid-90's when grunge was also on the decline).

Smells like teen spirit? The first time I heard it in 1991, That year was really good when it comes to music because of killer new releases like Metallica's Black Album, Skid Row's Slave to the Grind, The 2 Illusion albums from GN'R and Van Halen's F.U.C.K. album.

and then... I heard Nirvana's Smells like teen spirit! I'll be honest, it caught my fancy for a while because of the riff as well...

then I remembered the riff from Boston's "More than a feeling"...  kaya pala may charm nung una kong napakinggan ung Smells like eh! heheheh :-D

+1  EVH's body of work makes about 90% of rock guitar players after him over-rated.  very few rock guitarists have done it better than him. that makes THEM over-rated.
