Converting Unregulated to Regulated Power Supplies.
« on: April 17, 2007, 09:27:51 PM »
If pwde po, ano po pwede palitan or dagdagan pra maging regulated? Pakipost na lang po ng step by step poto or schematics if meron. Thanks in advance.

you'll need to add a regulator.

hehehe... medyo pilosopo ang dating, but it's true. you'll need an LM7809 or LM317 regulator. and chances are you'll need a new circuit board for that. pag minalas di pa magkakasya sa existing adaptor housing mo.

so, in many cases, it's better to just buy a new regulated power supply altogether or build one from the ground up.

Cut the + wire. Then get a 7809 voltage regulator from Deeco. The configuration of this is In-Ground-Out. So yung pinutol mong wire, connect the In of the 7809 to the wire that goes to the adaptor. Then connect the Out pin to the crown jack side. Yung gitna, yung ground, connect that to the - wire of the adapter. Fancy putting a heatsink or not, and that's it.

Make sure the adapter you're converting is at least 9VDC unregulated or better, 12VDC unregulated. The 7809 needs about 2.5 volts of "burn" voltage. 9VDC unregulated will spit out 12 volts or so at no-load condition, but if you start off with a 12VDC unregulated (around 16 volts DC out at no-load) , your output will be cleaner and quieter, although the pitfall is mas mabilis mag-init ang regulator mo and you might really need a heatsink. Me nabibili namang slip-on types.

7809 is a fixed voltage regulator. No need for output voltage selector because it is useless if all you use is a 7809.

9 volts is what is usually needed anyway.

Nakalimutan mo yung rectifiers :D .

Yung iba meron pang line-side varistors for spike filtering.

hahaha... tama!

add-ons: EMI/RFI filter at AC filter(la pa akong idea dito :-()

The 7809 can handle 1A...teka 1.5A ata. at 20mA per pedal, 1A can power 50 pedals. Of course there are exceptions such as the Digitech Whammy and certain tube-based pedals. So the simple answer is, you need only one and then tap as many outputs as you need. :D  :-D

mga masters, newbie question here (at buhayin ko na din itong thread). i brought my generic adaptor sa technician sabi 7909 daw (instead of 7809) ang ilalagay kc parang sa center negative daw yun. don't know much on electronics, paging sir BAMF etc. pa help naman po! thank you...

7809 will do fine. :-) Just a matter of where you connect the legs of the 7809 (see BAMF's earlier post).
