Which one to start with?
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:27:38 PM »
Hi guys! I'm planning to turn my room into a little recording studio. I'm actually a guitarist but i want to try out drums  :-)  I'm still a student so my budget is limited and of course i live with my parents (who aren't really fond of my music)

This year i'm planning to buy something to start with, I'm torn between these two:

*Yamaha DD-65
+Portable Drumset
+Cheap (15,000)
+Ease of Recoring
-would need replacement sooner or later

*Pearl Target Jr.
+Nothing beats the original
+more expensive but still affordable (22,900)
-needs 10 piece drum mics and audio interface to record
-my room would need soundproofing in order for me to play it regularly

IMO:

If you're room is large enough to accomodate the Acoustic Drum set, go for it. As you said Electronic Drum-pad will be replaced sooner.

Skills wise, I highly recommend the Acoustic kit. why? (Dynamics) dont need 10 microphone to start with, Steve Smith uses only 4 mics, your recording skill will also add to your skills.

To wrap it up, go for the acoustic kit... IMO

+1 for acoustic, for the purpose of familiarizing yourself with it.

buy some acoustic boards from wilcom builders depot. this would greatly reduce the noise coming from your room. a bit pricey but effective, safe and looks good.

Here we go again. Eggtrays are useless for insulation, ugly, and a fire hazard.

Agree. Egg trays don't really do anything except get dirty. Acoustic boards should work. Google cheap soundproofing ideas, and check out the ones that come from studio owners or sound engineers.

I recently saw the Medeli 305, it's like a clone of the DD65, but half the price :) has anyone tried it?
