Title: What Bass Drum Pedal do you use? *merged*
Post by: Bammbamm on September 23, 2006, 02:04:36 PM
Anong brand ng pedal ang gamit nyo? Anong cam, tension...etc?
What method are you using to play these...
What music genre to which setup?

Mine is Pearl Elim powershifter, mid to tight spring tension, chain drive & white cam.
I play heel-toe most of the time, specially to intricate funky grooves with single peds.
Heel-up when I play 16ths on double peds....any tips, advice? :)

60-70 degree beater angle
no beater weight
no toe stop

heel down pag normal speeds
heel up sa 16 beats

I use a Pearl Powershifter Eliminator Double Bass Pedal

My Settings:

- Belt Drive (I prefer its more natural, floating feel)
- Either red or blue cam, depending on my mood (but I use the red cam most of the time)
- Powershifter = light setting
- Beater Angle = stock middle
- Footboard Angle = stock middle
- Spring Tension = light-to-medium tension
- Traction Plate = slide side nearest to me; no Traction Grip dots

I'm a slider; hence, the slide set-up on the traction plate.  And I also do some of that heel-toe technique.  I don't want my feet to stick to the pedal.  I want my feet to dance freely.

I play for K24/7, an r&b/hiphop band.  Though our style is r&b/hiphop, our music can be quite musically diverse.  Some of our music have a rock feel into it... Some have a jazzier touch... And anything in between.  Modern r&b/hiphop is dynamic.  It's a good thing that my Elims can handle any kinds of feel or playing styles.

Title: Bass pedal tension spring adjustment

Hello! I'm very curious sa tension spring adjustment ng bass pedal... pano ba ginagawa yun? what are the advantages and disadvantages of tight and loose spring?

It is all about feel, response, and resistance.

You will be able to adjust the 3 parameters above by tightening or loosening the tension spring depending on what works best for you.

Check this thread out for examples:

oh...thanks! but how do you exactly adjust that part?

By simply loosening the tension lock (top) and turning the tension knob (bottom).

Just my ramblings regarding on bass drum concepts...

Lahat ng pedal may "sweet spot"...yun yung part ng pedal mo kung saan mas maganda ang reaction niya sa pagtapak mo. dun mo try apakan yung pedal for a start. Focus on waht is comfortable to you...pwedeng sa kanya oks, sayo medyo hindi...Maganda na may makasanayan ka talaga na foot technique, pero maganda din kung mapag aralan mo at ma praktis din yung iba't ibang techniques such as swivel, heel toe, heel up, heel down, slide, ankle and so on...bawat style, may ma ooffer na kakaibang approach sa drumming natin. Never be afraid to experiment, minsan you may come up with a better technique suitable to your playing. And try mixing up those techniques, sometimes, mixing them up, make your licks easier. :-)

Once you have mastered your technique (ako hanggang ngayon bano parin ), kahit anong pedal yan, magagawa mo, kaya lang syempre, di kasing dali kung sa sarili mong pedal, sa sarili mong set up.

I'm using the Pearl Eliminator Chain Drive 2002C, I tried all the given cams and gave time using them, minsan, binabalikan ko padin yung iba. Recently, I have been using the Purple cam...it is the combination of the red cam's sensitivity and the blue cam's power near upon impact. Spring tension is loose to acheive the "top heavy feel", beater distance is about 3.5-4.5 inches away from the bass head to get more power and rebound, beater height is permanently set at the center of the bass drum or a bit higher para mas may weight, mas may control ka. Footboard is set to highest to promote better bounce, and powershifter feature is set on hardest to add extra power.

BOW :-D

i have mapex P380a
a cheap pedal but have good attack, response and feel..
hindi ko alam kung baket, basta wala aqng reklamo sa pedal na to, un nga lang single chain and wala itong plate.

60-70 degrees beater angle, medium-tight spring tension, no toe stopper (wala naman kasing toe stopper tong pedal ko, low-end lng kc ng mapex to haha)  high beater angle for attack! hehe  :-D

ayun ayun ayun!

im using gibraltar9611 strap drive
stock foot board angle
spring tension medium-tight
60degree beater angle
no counter weights
no toe stop

Outdated na pala ang 2-year old post ko sa taas.  Kaya pa-update lang...

Last year, I switched back to Tama Iron Cobra pedals.

I use a second-generation Power Glide model double pedal.  I use the felt beaters.  My springs are the standard ones, set in medium tension.  And most of the adjustments are in stock position.  I removed the toe stops because I don't really use it, and I only use the beater counterweights as a memory lock for my beaters.

This is my second IC double pedal (my first double pedal is a Rolling Glide IC, which I had from 2002-05, then I switched to Elims, then I switched back to Cobras), and I already have these for a year and a half.  It's still working really well.  Though I'm planning to upgrade maybe next year.  I've tried the 2007 IC, and the Cobra Coil does make a difference.

as of now i'm using pearl powershifter single pedal lang. nasa dulo(pinakamalapit sayo) yung PS. i think light yun. tapos yung beater angle di masyado malayo. spring tension medyo loose ng konti. nagtry na kasi ako ng ibang set-up ng pedal at yung set-up na yun ang pinaka comfortable ako. at pinakanagagamit ko para sa fast heel-toes.

I use Iron Cobra PowerGlide (2007 model) double pedal with cobra coil on both peds.

Beater angle is like 45-55°, footboard angle is slightly lower than stock settings.
You'll get powerfull strokes because of that beater angle and less tiring because
of the low footboard angle setting.

I use IC wood beaters to achieve "triggered-like" sound on the bassdrum.
It's quite not versatile but it really owns felt on continuous fast strokes.
Felt tends to grumble sometimes specially when the guitar player is very
loud while wood still gives you a distinct continuous bassdrum sound.

All springs including the cobra coils are tightend all the way to give me the
fastest possible return of the beaters from the head.

Yun lamang po. :-)

goodluck kapatid. :-)

max footboard angle
heaviest powershifter setting
beater angle at around 45 degrees
iron cobra rubber beater

salamat!

Speed cobra for me because I have a big foot. <_<
The new Yamaha pedals are nice the long boards.but I don't why my feet flies in speed cobras
I also like axis longboards and pedals that aren't very tight.it feels like I'm holding for dear life when I'm using one.

i have owned a gibralter avenger, pearl elims (strap drive), DW 7000, axis long boards, and currently, pearl demon drives.

the worse are gibralter and DW 7000 ... unresponsive as hell.

i love the pearl elims cause it feels very normal.

i love the axis cause they can go really fast, but it takes a little bit to get used to. it does not feel as normal or intuitive as pedals you got used to.

and finally, i love the pearl demon drives, because while they are direct drives, they still feel somewhat like cam driven pedals. if ever i need to get a new set of pedals, i would get either elims or demon drives. i feel comfy with them the most

Pearl Elims parin. I've tried a lot of drum pedals, Axis, Sonor, DD, Speed Cobra, Iron Cobra, Elims, Mapex, Lazer, Gibraltar, Trick.

Reversible ang cam niya between Power Glide at Rolling Glide. :)

Hmmm I can't figure out how this is clamped to the bass drum hoop, my guess is horizontal ang clamping? by tightening the screw in between the springs para ipitin yung hoop...

since the pedal is symmetrical, parang the bass drum should be front and center of the drummer...medyo weird ang positioning, you may have to adjust the whole kit just to accomodate this pedal, usually the clamp is on the right pedal kapag double peds...I also see that the footboard can be pivoted...para sa sakang or pike  :-D

Reversible ang cam niya between Power Glide at Rolling Glide. :)

I want to try their Demon Chain Drive to differentiate. Gusto ko masubukan personally to distinguish which is which. Sana may magdala sa pinaplanong EB "Interaction". :-D

Question lang sa mga eliminator peeps, lumuluwag ba ang double chain niyo in the long run? O depende lang sa gumagamit? Kasi may nagamit ako nagsswivel from side to side.

I'm a beginner... but my poor foot technique is best compensated by any long foot board, with smooth surfaces, where it can slide up and down. That being said, I am flattered with a TAMA speed cobra....

It's a confidence builder...=)

Never thought of this kasi it's like iron cobra with a stronger force and long footboard.
And I worked my techniques before I acquired speed cobra, one thing I could tell you is the perfect balance of jojo Mayer is not my cup of tea, hehe.

Hehe, ang gastos ko namlang dapat this year sa drums ko,at isa siguro cymbal, like crash of doom! Sarap siguro sa setup ko yun, ehehe

Personally I like chakkys setup, pero kasi my foot it used to bigger pedals, hehe, mas convenient longboard type.hehe.siguro pag Naging haciendero ako bibili ako ng axis longboards, haha.
Pero speed cobra is everything I want.haha.

So sa mga peeps na lurker, try pedals as much as you can. Kasi it might appeal to you but won't work for you.

I like my DD setup too.. Konting tinkers lang dito at dyan for your own preference. Kaya rin ako na-inlove talaga sa DD.. Like what I've said sa EB, I tried converting my DD from Shortboard to Longboard before. Tama yang suggestion na yan eh, try pedals as much as you can. Minsan pa naman may sakit tayo na "Looks of the gear over the quality it can give you". Kaya sa pedal wala talagang "the best, the best" na yan eh. Ultimo generic lang as long as nabibigay ng pedal na ginagamit mo yung quality na kailangan mo, ayos na.

Maganda ang SC, thanks for letting me try it. Hehe
