I love soul and and old-skool r&b.  I'm trying to learn the techniques too but there are quite a number of such songs in our lineup already.  In fact, overall our music is prolly 50% soul/gospel and 50% blues-rock.

Here's a sample of one of soul/gospel songs (Nina Simone):

You mean the song we played on the video?  Yeah, it sounds bluesy but it ain't blues in the traditional sense.

Soul/old skool R&B is supposed to sound bluesy because they drink liberally from the deep well of blues.

Hey dude...rnb and soul geetar player here...
not a shredder though..since its not necessary sa genre eh..
slow passages make it so worthwhile...
a little gain here, chimey cleans there. throw in a decent wah sound...perhaps synth technology on guitar if u got the gear...

anything you need man...I'm just a private message away...si sir deltaslim dami ko natutunan dyan bro..

i'm not alone!

hahah. ya i like old skul rnb pati soul. oks na oks. sayang lang kasi bagong rnb medyo synth na tunog.

gusto ko efx kapag naka-electric yung wah, or yung clean lang na parang 'twangy' yung sound. bordering between jazz and blues with some funk makes my day. heheh

soul din tipo ng band ko ngayon. sarap kasi kantahin, more with the lyrics. motown din maganda. soul pa rin naman yun diba? hehe. medyo di ko pa ma-identify kasi napaka-diverse kasi ng tunog ng soul eh

that's what i like with soul kasi you don't need to have em fast hands to play. i choose to lay low on synth though para mas raw yung tunog. saka mahal din synth boxes eh. heheh.

I'm also more into r&b/soul..

If you want to play R&B, basic percussive techniques, muted notes, and passing chords lang medyo pundasyon mo. Should I say yung pag tipa mo ng chords mas emphasis yung bilang mo sa beat.

Okay na listening 70s stuff from EWF, Stylistics, Aretha Franklin, marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight old records.
Ready to play funk, I suggest Tower of Power.

Importante malawak yung understanding mo sa chord construction.

as for chord improvs, i'm moving on improving dun sa aspect na yun. hmmmm... meron na kayang soul/ rnb thread? pede cguro to.

nway for new school pinaka-trip ko gitarista ni craig david... demn!
