We tried the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 on my old D40.

it's working. actually may film pa ngang nakalagay. someone put a roll last year and hindi naman ginamit. i tested it, then i though na-stock yung shutter nya. yun pala naka-timer lang. i did a couple of tests pa. anyway, mukhang na-expose ko yung unang part ng film, kasi binuksan ko to check. ok pa naman. even the bulb setting works. kailangan lang ng cleaning nung lens dahil may konting molds at mga patay na insekto sa loob. pero 100% working pa naman sya. eto ang camera na natutunan kong gamitin nung bata pa ako, and this was the one i used when i started to get into photography (mga 10 years ago). pangarap ko pa nga nun Nikon F4 eh. hehe..  8-)
Ill show you some test shots. di ko lang kasi mahanap yung USB interface nung camera eh.

I just recenlty bought a Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS lens, I like it more than my kit lens right now. I'd also like a 50mm 1.4 lens. :-)

i guess it depends on a lot of factors, but for me, here are my favorite nikkors:

for general walk-around lens: 24-70 f/2.8 because of it's sharpness and it's range

for wide-angled shots: 10-24 f/3.5-4.5 because that's the widest i have.. though i would LOVE to have a tokina 11-16 f/2.8 (the only bad thing i've read about this lens is it's usually out of stock)

for portrait shots: 85 f/1.4 for it's sharpness and speed (f/1.4!)

my tokina 50-135mm... i love it...

but if i have the money... i'll get a 24 70 2.8 VR II and a 70 200 2.8 VR II...

Canon

Im loving the nikkor 50 1.4 tsaka 18-70 zoom.

The 50 is fast and the zoom is pretty versatile in daytime.

I just started like a month ago, I have an 18-55 kit (decent...cheap)and a 50mm F1.8 prime (sharp..cheap). I use both a lot, but prefer to have a lens instead of 2 that can do both or more. I was just at a photo shoot in a gun range and realize I need to get a zoom lens.(55-250 F4-5.6 IS... cheap). I guess I just stick to buying cheap and decent glass right now since I am still learning and maybe if I do get better and serious at it...I'll get better gear. (like a 7D or even Mark II and some L lenses)

Interested in getting that strobist lighting kit too ...setup a mini studio at home..... never ending gastos...just like the my other hobby .....haaay.   :-P

i once had a canon 450d and 18-55mm kit lens... and was able to get decent pictures... now i'm using a nikon body and have 2 tokina lenses...

did some research, read a lot of reviews, and decided to get TOKINA over sigma and tamron... (found out also that Tokina engineers were previously Nikon employees)

a Canon 70 200 2.8 will definitely be better than a Tokina 50-135 2.8.... but if you are in a tight budget, i'd go for a Tokina any day... some will go for a Tamron or a Sigma...

at the end of the day, what will matter is the picture you took... that's where everything comes in... creativity, correct exposure, composition, framing, etc...

i'd get Nikkor lenses if i have the money....

here is my first dslr shot 450d and 18-55mm

that photo is my first DSLR shot, and was a newbie at that time (still learning).. a professional can get a better shot using the same lens, 18 55mm...

Macro lenses are special lenses designed for close-up work with smaller objects. As you focus further out from the minimum focusing distance, the reproduction ratio drops accordingly on non-macro lenses, but the macro lens will still focus out to infinity...

i have friends actually who use Nikkor 105mm macro lens for portraiture... and really get super sharp images...

in the case of the photo i posted, i had a hard time focusing since 18-55mm lens isn't intended for macro work...

tip: you can make your 50mm lens take macro shots by using extension tubes... the extension tubes will make you get closer to your subject :)

Same as yours 18-55mm IS. I think it pretty much beats my kit lens with regards to sharpness & focus. I was thinking of getting a Sigma 70-300mm, but after I read comparison between the Canon 55-250mm & Sigma 70-300mm I chose to get the latter.

I'll still keep my kit lens (for now) for wide angled shots, but when I get the Canon 50mm 1.4 &/or Canon 16-35mm f2.8L I'd probably sell it.

My favorite will always be the 70-200f4.0 IS and the nifty-fifty. Planning to get the 135mm. For me, primes are way better, pagod lang hehehe.

Well I think di masyadong malaki factor yung pagiging macro sa portraits, it's probably the range + quality ng glass + lighting. At siempre, iba talaga primes sa portrait.

I'm maximizing what I can get with the kit lens.... but it won't be long I'm going to substitute it with a 17-55 F2.8 . Haven't tried the 50mm F1.4 thouhg. I opted for the F1.8 II because its dirt cheap....and it takes really sharp pictures too.

kung canon ka sana i'd recommend a 17-40L. :-D

so kung nikon, either 17-55 f2.8 or yung 16-35mm f4. na parehong nasa 60k price range.  :-D
kung 3rd-party, pwede kang mag tamron 17-50 f2.8 or yung tokina 16-50 f2.8.

if i were you, i'd get a 50mm f1.8 or an 85mm f1.8 for portrait/night photography; and then get a wide-angle lens dedicated for landscape photography.

i have a 30mm 1.4, so far, okay naman. never had a chance to try nifty-fifty but i believe they're both the same quality. although, you can push 1.4 further than 1.8. anyway, since you are comparing two lenses with same aperture, then i suggest you go with 35mm. its easier to move forward than move backward

(http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k146/monkeykissinghigad/DSC_8513.jpg) (http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k146/monkeykissinghigad/?action=view&current=DSC_8513.jpg)

Normal lang ba to? Di tulad nung sa 18-55mm ko dati. Ambilis lang, kaya madali lang mag-bokeh. Anyway, sulit naman.

Favorite lens:
Minolta 28-135mm f4-4.5, then Minolta 70-210 f4, then of course the Minolta 50mm f1.7

what I have right now is an old full manual Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and a recently acquired (from a trade) Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens with Optical Stabilizer but with a broken AF motor (so full manual pa rin which I prefer)

iba pa rin kasi para sakin ang all manual, tingin ko nga mas mabilis pa ako mag focus kesa sa AF ng mga lente  :-D (20-20 vision) and syempre mas matagal ang battery life (so no need for heavy grips for me)

my next purchase will either be a Macro or UWA lens

@rockophoria

oddly YES

I find it easy kasi to judge clarity lalo na when im using my prime lens.. (I rarely use my zoom lens when taking moving objects at mabigat kasi).. call it weird pero im always close to the action..  :-D

here's one example:

what I do is naka half press na ako tsaka naghihintay nalang ng exact moment to capture a nice shot.. in this case a basketball game sa office namin.. prime lens ang gamit ko dito, kada galaw ng subjects na kukunan ko sinusundan ko na ng focus.. its really easy for me rather than rely sa AF na kapag yung gusto ko ng scene eh dumating na (like a looming block shot) eh di pa pala nakapagmeter/focus yung lens.. obviously di magfa-fire yung shutter or kung magcapture man.. BLURRED sya.. sayang lang, maaasar lang ako..

when using naman my zoom lens eh mas nagrerely ako sa VR/IS or OS kesa sa AF, so I traded my non-os Sigma 28-200 AF sa isang Sigma 18-200mm with OS kahit na sira yung AF.. as I really dont use AF anymore

ganito,

you can actually have you camera modified for a split-screen to help you focus better manually. check this out, http://www.pinoyphotography.org/forum/index.php?topic=58122.0

nope..

:-D and since I got my D90 right now nasa 1800 palang ang actuations nya.. meaning I rarely repeat my shot.. hehehe

kanya kanyang preferences nga talaga  :-D. ako nman mas marami out of focus pag manual focus.

yep! ginawa ang autofocus para magamit at mapadali ang trabaho ng mga photographers so gamitin nyo lang ng gamitin, there's no "astig-label" on using manual focus and "lazy-@ss noob" on using AF tagged on us.. walang ganun, its no big-of-a-deal.

my camera will still need an AF-Lens soon.. lalo na pag madalas hinihiram ng ermats ko. :-D

i was referring to the split-screen focusing on 35mm SLR's, not the autofocus on the newer film cameras like the EOS 100F. i shoot film too using an '83 yashica FX3, and it has been my camera for more than a decade after acquiring it from my dad who also used it for a while. EVERYTHING is manual on that camera. what i was suggesting on my previous post is to install a split-focusing screen on your camera TO HELP YOU FOCUS MANUALLY.

I think hindi ko pa kailangan split-focusing screen.. (kung ano man yun na I dont have an idea)

I believe I need to go back to school for that one!  :-D

not a problem sir.
yung picture na pinakita ko sa taas,

yung screen na may bilog then may line sa gitna nung bilog - yan yung split focus screen kung tawagin. yan yung actual mong makikita sa viewfinder. so kapag out-of-focus ka, naka-split yung object mo, then as you re-focus, darating yung point na hindi na split yung image na makikita mo sa viewfinder mo. that's the time na naka-focus ka na sa object mo ng maayos.
before maimbento ang AF ng mga SLR's, photographers have used this for a very long time. actually, ngayon may kilala akong naka D300 tapos pinalagyan nya ng split-screen yung camera nya, dahil mas accurate talaga mag-focus manually, sabi nya.

ahh now I remember!

i also use manual focusing dahil walang motor yung camera ko and nikon's 50mm doesnt have one as well. that was the time i realized na mas ok sana kung may split-screen yung D40x ko.  8-)

hmmmm. im using an AFS 35mm f1.8g on my d90.

pansin ko lang na if i compare images taken with AF, and images manually focused by me (perfect 20/20),

the Manually focused images are sharper at 100% zoom/crop.

pero pag unzoomed naman both pics di pansin.

no biggie naman, but considering how much these things cost, i would have expected more.  : /

thats one expensive prime!  :-D

anyways about the AF thingie, yes we people become somewhat dependent on it like kahit na pansin natin hindi pa gaanong focus yung kukunan mo pagka-half press eh basta narining mo na yung focus "go signal beep" eh idederetso mo na.. just to find out in the end (pag tinitingnan mo na sya sa PC) na yung background pala ng subject mo ang nafocus ng husto.

madalas nahihirapan pa nga yung lens mo to focus kaya matagal kang naka half press.. by the time nag meter na eh wala na yung precious moment na gusto mong kunan.. but it works both ways.. I love AF... yung fact lang na may AF ang gusto ko.. hehehe but using it is another story

when using a zoom lens, what i tend to do is push it to the longest focal length. then i let the camera AF to that specific portion that i prefer; turn of the AF motor; zoom out for composition then shoot.
