I've always wanted to be loyal to Nikon. As much as possible I want to avoid buying 3rd party lenses and accessories. I was told in a workshop I attended to avoid 3rd party lenses. But Nikkor lenses are just too darn expensive. I recently applied in a company specializing in weddings that are Nikon users and they're asking me if I'm willing to buy an all-around zoom f2.8 lens. Since I'm a DX user, they told me to get the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8.
I was browsing Facebook a while ago and I came across dbgadgets. They're selling Tamron & Sigma 17-50mm f2.8's and it's a LOT CHEAPER than the Nikkor 17-55. I think it only costs around 18,500 for the Tamron. The Sigma almost the same price. Whereas the Nikkor costs around 57,000 bucks! I'm leaning towards the Tamron because i've been hearing a lot of negative stuff about Sigma. Has anybody tried using that Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC? I wanna get it coz it's cheaper but I'm afraid I might not get quality photos from that lens.
Anybody?

not necessarily. some are good while some are really a bust. but avoiding 3rd party lenses will drain your wallet and limit your potential and creativity as a photographer.
tamron 17-50 is a pretty decent lens. try the non VC one, it's much sharper than the one with VC.
-
My thoughts. In sharpness, your Nikkor 18-105 f3.5 screwed up my Sigma 70-200 2.8. SRSLY. I won't be trying any more Sigma in the future, but I MIGHT try a Tamron. Or really save up for old Nikkors.

di naman porke brand na ng canon or nikon e the best na. sa camera siguro pero sa lens hindi lahat patok. like for example uwa's. i'd take tokina 11-16 2.8 anytime to nikkor 10-24 or 12-24. that tokina is really really good, abot kaya hindi katulad nung 2 nikkor, mahal na di pa fixed aperture. sulit and irerecommenda ko talaga yang lens na yan.
not all cases din ng 3rd party lenses e magaganda. gaya nung nabili kong sigma 24-70 2.8 ex dg macro. sobrang lugi. what i got was a bad copy ika nga. hindi sharp kahit na anong technique gawin ko. pangit pa kulay. pinacalibrate ko pa sa sigma makati. wala ganun din after. binenta ko na lang. since that i stayed away na sa sigma brand. ung 70-200 nila natest ko hindi din ako ganun kaimpressed compared sa counterpart na nikkor. malayo talaga.
-
There are only quite a few 3rd party lenses that can give level of IQ against the manufacturer lens. Also there are calibration issues that come with them which has to be corrected by the manufacturer.
Good thing there are a lot of review sites that you could check out which conduct objective testing of there lenses. You can already know how the lenses would perform and would help you decide whether or not the lens will suit you with regards to your expected IQ outputs and budget.

Tokina FTW and there's this another lens that begins with H------. I Dont remember but ive read a lot of reviews about it saying it is sharp. No problem with those 3rd parties perhaps but im definitely staying away from Sigmas.

had a Tokina 50 135mm f2.8 and a Sigma 30mm f1.4
Tokina was ok, Sigma had focusing issues... but if you have the money, buy Nikon. iba pa rin talaga.

why not open your options to vintage lenses? for USD100, you can get 3-4 lenses which, with the right technique, can give you the same results as Canon's / Nikkor's.

What kind of vintage lens would you recommend?
For starters...
Helios 44m-2 or 44m-7
Jupiter-9
SMC Takumar
Rokkor's
Zeiss (expensive)

I have Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 nonVC luckily its a good copy. when buying make sure to test it well enough.

the Tokina 11-16 is the only choice for Nikon DX users who wants an UWA. Haha!

e syempre sir ung king ng uwa's, nikkkor 14-24 e pang fx lang yun hehe

Never tried a 3rd party on my end. Canon lenses kasi are not that expensive compared to nikon's. Anyways, each has its own edge naman, that's why online reviews are there to back you up before buying an equipment. its better din siguro if you have friend na merong third party lenses so you can have a feel of what it is maybe even better if your friend has the lens you're eyeing for. Just pray for a good copy nalang kasi kahit naman nikon or canon lenses minsan sumasablay rin talaga so you can never be so sure. but all in all it all depends on the composition and eye. sabi nga nung friend ko "your lens is a tool, no matter how expensive it is, if you don't know how to use it right, it's worth nothing."

Uy nice bro. Sana pwede kong ma-try yang lens mo. Phased out na ba yan? Parang yung mga VC nalang nakikita kong binebenta eh.

meron pa ata boss. kay jeptall and kim meron pa. mas ok talaga non vc and mas mura pa

How much score mo sayo? Kamusta naman yung build quality?
-
10k :) sa tpc ko lang nakuha bro.. ok naman pag ka plastic build nya. tapos sarap ng feel pag ngzoom ka kasi medyo stiff hindi zoom kagad. namili ako sa kanila nung 28-75mm tamron kasi may macro function pero i decided to still go with the 17-50mm habol ko rin ung extra wide.
-
I see. Sharp naman mga kuha nya? May mga sample shots ka from your 17-50mm? Tingin naman...
-
e syempre sir ung king ng uwa's, nikkkor 14-24 e pang fx lang yun hehe
problem with that lens is that it is not landscape-friendly.

well sigma are ain't that bad sir Kurtcobainer recently got a sigma 28m 1.8 im happy with the performance.
tapat tapat lng siguro if bad copy or good copy and its not bad to use 3rd party lens if you want Sharper images wna tinalbugan ang Nikon and canon sa sharpness sa catergory look for sigma 35m 1.4 ng sigma natalo nya sa review ang nikon and Canon sa mga 35m. specialy bokeh nya creamy plus budget Friendly.
i myself a user ng 3rd party lens isa sa main UWA ko is Rokinon 14m its pretty sharp to me though its a manual focus
if your looking sir kurtcobainer ng mga old nikkor Lenses na sharp try mo maka iscore ng 24-85 2.8 its a good glass or try 35-70 2.8

Or baka may masuggest kayong ibang lens with the same qualities AND price range. hehe.. as I dont have that luxury for lens as of yet :nosebleed: Thanks

I made a pass on the Tammy 17-50mm. Took in a Nikkor 35mm f1.8 DX instead. Now waiting for my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 coming this March :) I'm still skeptic about the Tammy.

Nikon MOunt Rokinon 14m 2.8 with UMC
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Rokinon-14mm-f-2-8-F2-8-Lens-for-Nikon-D700-D300S-D3100-D5100-D7000-DSLR-Camera-/00/s/MjY1WDMwMA==/$T2eC16h,!zcE9s4g4wI-BQuR-g4dQg~~60_35.JPG
yan ang image nya.
3 bagay lang ang characteristics na downfall nya but when it comes to sharpness hindi na siya nalalayo sa 14-24. ng Nikon
1. manual Focus
2.Distortion
3. Filter thread
ang hirap mag landscape photo especially if sunrise need mo talaga gumamit ng mga ND filters lalu na tanghaling tapat di ka makapag Slow shutter so yan down fall nya then sa distortion matindi din ang distortion nya but magagawan mo ng paraan thru lightroom but sometimes kse yung pag ka distor ng image is nakakatulong minsan nakakasama dipende sa gusto mong composition
1yr na din na sakin itong Rokinon overall sakin okey na itong 14m rokinon kse sa price nya its a good performer and hindi ko na problema ngayon ang Filter system may bago ng labas ngayon last year lang siya ni release Filter system dedicated for this type of lens though half of the price ng Filter system is the lens price but still its a worth a buck para skin.. yan review ko hehehe
-
Nice, thanks. I should try one these lenses. Maka-bisita nga sa Hidalgo this weekend. Baka meron dun.

the rokinon/samyang 85mm 1.4 is the bomb. beats nikon 85mm 1.4 afd in both sharpness and bokeh. i sold my samyang already because im going FX, then i found out a day after the sale that the samyang can do FX 😳

nagsearch ako ng info about d2 marami palang may ganitong problema.

So alin ang most bang for the buck at consistent 3rd party lenses na brand?

it depends what kind of lens ang hinahanap mo different brand have different feedbacks but in my own opinion i'd go for Rokinon = Samyang and Sigma :-) both manufacturer's i have a lens. so far i am happy with its performance

Thanks, actually i did research and yes im thinking of getting a tamron. :-D

i'm a nikon shooter and i have a mix of tamron, sigma and nikon lenses in my collection. after getting proper photography lessons, i'm disposing most of my nikon dx, tamron and sigma lenses except for the nikkor fx lenses that i have. pansin ko na hindi nga sila kasing talas ng nikkor. now i'm building a proper collection of lenses. i'm acquiring the nikon holy trinity and king of bokehs. and because of this, i;m selling some of my guitars.

As of the moment, the only 3rd party lens I have is the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 Ver. 1. Why? Because, I think it's better than Nikon's UWA lens. Other than that, it's all Nikon glass. I also sold, most of my guitar gear to get Nikkor lenses. But I'm not really planning on completing the trinity. Just the 24-70 f2.8. I already have the Nikkor AF 80-200mm f2.8D ED and it works for me since I only shoot events and weddings not fast action stuff. Right now, I want to have an all-prime set. Nikkor's 20/35/50/85mm lenses. But I doubt, I can complete them. Hehehe.

Nice cool set of lenses hehehe well me nag step back muna ako for camera gear. Puro shoot lang muna lumalayo muna ko sa lens kse mas pinag tutuunan ko ng pansin yung panorama set up ko nag ssave up ako so im still using my 3rd party lens like 28m sigma and 14m rokinon ang nikorr ko lang is yung 50m ko :-)
-
Disposed my sigma 50 1.4..sayang pero ok na din bumalik ako kay old nifty fifty nikkor 50 1.8d to complement his big brother nikkor 70-200 hehe :-D
-
I have owned and tried those old Tokinas ( 28-80 f2.8, 12-24 f4, 50-135 f2.8 ) back when I still have my Nikon D300. Pretty decent IQ and sharpness especially with the 50-135 f2.8. Image is soft and chromatic aberration is noticeable with 28-80 f2.8
-
-
sold all my third party lenses except for my 70-200 f/2.8 sigma but will be selling it soon and replace it with a nikkor vrii of the same range

Pa OT:
Hi guys, I'm a newbie sa photography. Just 2 weeks ago, I bought my first DSLR. I bought an entry level DSLR which is a Nikon D3100. The kitlens does the job (landscape, seascape, cityscape, etc.) but I'm planning to shoot portrait with a nice creamy background bokeh. Someone is selling me a cheap Nikon 50mm 1.8d. The problem is that my cam will not autofocus on AF D lenses. So my resort would be is to manually focus it. Madali lang ba yung manual focusing nito to take sharp foreground and blurry background? or is it a PITA?
Anyway, the cheap price is 2000Php. Should I go for it?
Thanks.

Ang 50m 1.8 is a good lens to buy you cannot go wrong with it but since u are using a crop sensor save up and buy 35m 1.8 it git af compatibility with ur body plus its designed for crop sensors i'm not a portrait shooter so no idea in shooting manual focus for portraits so i can't help you with that but if you gonna ask me shooting manual lens in a landscapes i can say yes its not bad ahooting in manual as i myself uses manual lens for seascapes and milky ways shoots

Thank you toinkking. I'm worried lang kasi since they were designed for motorized body to focus and get sharp photos (fast) pero baka mahirap gawin ito in manual focus mode or maybe it will really take time for me to get adjust eh mababagot na yung model or subject ko. Outdoor portrait plano ko like beach, etc. since it's summer kasi. :D
How much would it cost for a 35mm 1.8? How would it differ with the 50mm?
Sorry, nakapa newbie ko pa lang talaga.

Sorry can't help you with the pricing just check mo sa mga local shops mo jan im in overseas kaya i have no idea in pricing but sanayan lang kase sa manual focusing tlgang dipende sa experience mo yun so it needs a lot of practising but some manual focus lens ay merong focusing chip para di ka mahirapan mag focus

Thanks.
Ganyan setup ko man!

Well, I think I'd go for it na lang. I'll buy the 50mm 1.8D lens. Planning to do my first beach potrait shoot. Na pe-pressure na ako. lol! :)

have to agree with the old Sigmas having sub-par build and IQ than the signature Canons and Nikons. nakagamit na ko sometime in 2009-2010 and parang laruan lang ang feeling nya. but i did some checking lately and found out that they have moved to a new direction and are now producing high quality lenses that, as SLR Lounge editors have put it, are close to surpassing signature brands and have move on to compete with the likes of Zeiss.
im tempted to rent or borrow a 17-50mm f/2.8 OS for canon body. gusto ko try yung fixed aperture to justify my need for an all-rounder that can take shots in poorly lit locations.
sino ba naka sigma pa dyan? paki inggit naman ako haha

wag na zoom. mag prime ka "ART" lens is the [gooey brown stuff]! 35mm lang buhay ka na. plus factor if naka full frame ka pa.
-
