Speaker question
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:02:48 AM »
Tanong lng mga sir, im planning to buy a 5.1 speaker that i can use both for my PC and my cheap DVD player. My budget is 8k. I want it to be flexi --can be used for watching movies and listening to music. I'm using Altec Lansing na 2.1, medyo boomy ang bass, pang gaming sya at ok din kapag nanood ng DVD... ano po ba marerecommend nyo?

The Creative Inspire series would fit into your budget. Personally, I'd go for Klipsch. I wouldn't do any serious mixing on these babies, though.

Why get something that's not locally available? If you checked the link in my post, you will find the Klipsch costs 4.7K, a little over half your originally stated budget but the pic shown in the link is wrong. If you search the site in the link, there is an Altec 5.1 that goes for less than 3K.

THe Logitech is well received and it forms the basis for an Alesis line of monitors. For the cost of the Logitech, though, I'd rather invest in some Tapco monitors if I were seriously considering doing some mixing.

Like I mentioned earlier, Alesis used to market rebadged Logitech Z5600 5.1 speakers as part of their Pro-Actives line; the 5500 seem to be a step below that. The Logitechs got good reviews from Keyboard and Electronic Musician magazine.

If your intent is to get 5.1 speakers, then these will definitely do BUT... for mixing your recordings, I have to say that you will be more successful getting a pair of monitor speakers (preferably with 8" woofers). It's been my experience that the sub crossover frequency with these systems is not optimal and could skew your mixing process. Better to mix thru a stereo system and use the 5.1 system if you're mixing to surround dvd audio.

Yeah. And for the cost of the Logitech 5500, I'd rather invest in some Tapco S-8's.

Tapco (by Mackie) is available at Audiophile!!!  And I have to say, for the price... Tapco rocks!  Their mixers are great... they only have small form mixers... but then, if you're doing a show or recording that needs more than 12-16 channels... you'd probably be big enough to go the full Mackie rig.

BTW, I'm amazed at Tapco's quality... it's really pretty good.  Although I feel Behringer offers more for the money, Tapco's gear is heavy duty... sliders are heavy and offer really good feel, something even Soundcraft's E-series doesn't have (very light)... although Soundcraft does offer more channels.

Tapco's S5 and S8 monitors got much better reviews than Samson's Resolv series (which is also available at Audiophile).  I didn't have a chance to A/B both monitors in a decent place, so I can't give a good comparison though... but Tapco's feel heavier, which is supposed to be better for speaker response.  Both systems sound good though... even without their matching sub.
