Bros what do you recommend when you
Play live to cut through the mix while using
A multifx pedal? Do you have to add a booster
Or anything? tia :-D

-Understand the venue's acoustics
-Have a common level of dynamics among your band mates, let them know that it's not a freakin' competition

Less gain, boost mids

But before that, actually know if you really need to cut through the mix.

Yes this is true, if you want to be heard, talk to your bandmates for sound coordination specially when the band has two guitarist.

correct din ung pag boost ng mids and any other info dito, but still if lahat kayo nag papalakas ng tunog. useless din. hope it helps.

Understand the frequency range of the instruments in your band. Look for the frequency range where you are not competing with a lot of instruments and eq your rig accordingly.

P.S. If it sounds too trebly and honky in your bedroom.. It's probably gonna sound awesome in a band setting. Lol!

This, I've been playing for a while now, but I'm not really that good. And recently, nag search din ako ng topics regarding cutting through the mix, and narealize ko tong stuff na to. I mean it really makes sense, if you're going to provide what someone from the band already provides, then di ka nga maririnig.

RE: multifx sa IMO:

1. For solos don't use too much gain, as in swabeng crunch lang.
2. Boost is nice, pero I think it boils down pa rin sa EQ mo. haha
3. Wah! if my wah ka, may certain angle dun na for sure lulutang ka. Easiest way to cut through lol.
If there are encounters, there are partings as well

another good tip is to ask the lights guy to give you a blue spotlight when your guitar solo come up...works everytime.

Cutting the mix was a concept I dropped a few years back. Cutting through the mix is almost synonymous to being overbearing, ergo epal. Aim to be present in the mix, rather than cut through it.
I'd rather be sharp than flat.

You and your bandmates should learn how to lower your volume and use dynamics to emphasize different parts of a song.

This ^

It's really up to the sound tech, who ideally should know the venue's acoustics, to produce a good mix. Your job as the musician is to give the sound tech something good to work with. I've played in venues where the tech would drop the guitars from the mix because they're already too loud on the stage. So loud that they don't need to go through the p.a. anymore.

Back to making yourself be more audible while playing through a multi-fx, as already suggested, turn down the gain/distortion, bump up the mids.

i think he means cutting through the mix pag magsolo?

sa previous main band ko, i can cut easily through the mix because i emphasize my mids (yes even for rhythm parts) then i have an even more mid-y patch when soloing. but apart from that, as long as i can be heard in the mix, i'm good.  :-D

Yeah, reading back, I think it was more along these lines. But then, I think the principle still applies. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to overpower everyone else in the band even during a solo. Also, in gigs where you don't have a proper PA set up (i.e. 80% of gigs in Metro Manila, at least in my experience) I want to make sure I hear the drummer even when I have to up my levels -- there's nothing worse than an out of time/pocket solo.
I'd rather be sharp than flat.

Sharing some of the things that I do when performing live:
  • lower your gain/drive settings
  • boost the mids a bit
  • be careful not to use too much reverb

Hope this helps :)
