Title: built this little Tube Cricket amp...
Post by: Mike.B. on October 07, 2015, 08:11:12 PM

always wanted a tube amp but they cost so much money. so i decided to build one (well a hybrid one) offa the beavis-audio tube cricket schematic. the tubes and JRC386 chip are from RS. all other parts from raon or e-gizmo at taft.

had problems at first because I wired the gain and volume pots the other way around (gain pot controlling the volume, and vice versa). now it's working and I can't even turn it up all the way because I might disturb the neighbors, and I just finished telling them how loud they are every night when their teleseryes come on.

butchered the speaker from my marshall ms-2, I took out the headphone and dc input jacks, and put in a new input jack wired directly to the speaker.

gets a little noisy at full volume and gain, but I guess it's because of the crappy ace hardware power supply.

if I pass the ECE boards at the end of October, I will try to modify the circuit a bit and do some tests before considering selling.  :)
there's a few factors I have to take into account, like maybe adding a noise gate at the output, or testing if you could plug it directly into a PA, a proper case, stuff like that.

Sounds good. If you do get into making these to sell.. count me in

Hoping my neighbors go home for the weekend so I can record some sound clips. Maybe try to push it and get some driven tones.

Very nice! How many watts RMS does this put out? Starved plate design or standard 12AX7 B+? Care to share schematics?

Consider making that proposed noise gate a selector/plug-in option.
Some buyers might like the ability to have output signal raw: all the more to play around with.

Not entirely sure about the output power. I think the original designer rated it at 1/2 to 1 W (uncertain if peak or RMS).
Haven't gotten really deep into the science behind tubes (not exactly being taught to ECE's anymore)
But i believe it is a starved plate design.

If I can find a cleaner power supply, the gate may no longer be necessary.
And yeah, would like to keep it as small as possible. IF (a big IF haha) I do consider selling these, it would probably be advertised as more of a bedroom amp.

Ah OK. The tube was used in the preamp stage pala. Been toying with the idea of using 12ax7s as push pull output sections, but I've yet to find schematics for that kind of design
