Blues/Jazz Jamming Groups for Amateurs and Pros?
« on: May 31, 2008, 02:50:26 PM »
Are there any groups here that have weekly or monthly jammings? I think it'd be nice for the blues and jazz community to host impromptu jamming sessions for beginners like myself who are looking for such support groups. I'd be also nice in terms of creating a grass roots community which serves both as a means to scout new talent and also to increase awareness of both genres. For starters, it doesn't necessarily have to be a gig per say, it could be held in a person's house or the rooftop of a building. Just a thought. :)

There is the ""First Friday" workshop/jam, every first friday of the month. At 10-O2 bar, Sct Ybardolaza (near corner of Timog) facing the Shell station. It started last March, and this coming session (June 6) will the the fourth. The "workshop" starts at 7pm, usually led by Joey Valenciano. It has evolved into a nice round-table discussion on jazz-related issues. In addition to the discussions, video showings and guest resource people are planned for the future. The open jam starts about 9pm. Skarlet (who is part owner of the bar) usually heads the jam. Both amateurs and pros are welcome.

We are trying our best to keep this series afloat. While attendance has been encouraging, we'd like to see more people (young and old, amateur and pros, hardcore jazzers and general music lovers, etc.) bring their questions, ears, and instruments.

Hope to see you there.

We are also having a 'surprise'  jamming session every Wednesday at the penguin gallery (604 Remedios Street Malate Manila). This will start sa June 11 (and hopefully take off from there)

The concept is this.. We invite musician friends (those that play at Penguin already or those that we know personnally), just trio (bass player, guitar and drummer) to come. The musician themselves does not know who will be his 'jam mates or playmates' for the night. This is to promote spontaneity (But we try to pair people/musician based on their individual experience and musical taste, just to ensure compatibility with the other musician, kasi baka mahirapan silang mag jam pag masyadong malayo and kanikanilang backgroud). Based on the set-up, a vocalist, sax player or somebody can join them later depende sa mood...

You are invited and everyone is encourage to attend and 'jam'
We have experimented on these concept for sometime... the last time we had Noli Aurillo on guitar with Lourd de Veyra providing spontaneous poetry reading.

Sounds cool. I remember a time in the 80's when no club in metro manila would touch live jazz, so I'm really happy whenever a club holds up the flag nowadays. Good luck. I hope I can watch one of these days.

Haha! Dunno if you know him but his name is Raul Banzon, and the place was a bar along Mile Long or Amorsolo I think. He remembers you guys kept pushing up the key of the tune till he couldn't handle it anymore, and you kept laughing as you did it. Well that's how the story went, apparently he never forgot it. :)

Me also!  :-)

Philmusic jazzers should meet up at least monthly. Penguin Bar is a terrific place for jam sessions.  :-)

Tama si Aya, Jim.  19th East is a good place to jam. Of course, Wowie is so accomodating.  We had a chance to jam with them also twice - one with the Volunteers and Aliya Parcs and another one with Wowie, Riki Gonzales and Judith  Banal.  Yun nga lang kailangan on your toes ka talaga kasi ang lulupit ng mga makakasama mo.
