Well, "played" is almost correct. That show was MTV New Years "Subway To LA" which was taped in front of a live audience about 3 days before New Years Eve 1988 at a venue called The Country Club in Reseda, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. It was edited and played during the MTV New Years broadcast from NYC, as they wanted to give the appearance of the show being LIVE between the two coasts.

Joe sang live, the rest of us, musicians and backround singers, were simply pantomiming to a prerecorded track on DAT tape. We got the tape, of the 2 songs we had never heard before, 20 minutes before taping and had to learn them as best we could. If you look closely, you can see I made a few mistakes. My drum heads were covered with white vinyl flooring material, and the cymbals (Zildjian Platinum series) were each two cymbals glued together so as to reduce stage noise. But hey, it looks good on my resume right?

BTW, in the other videos we are actually playing live on TV with singer/songwriter  Danny Wilde who went on to form the band The Rembrandts.

Any chance you still remember your set-up during that performance? (as much detail as you can...hehehe)

* or should I say: "during the recorded version?" hehehe

For the Joe Cocker gig I used a rented Pearl MMX kit. 22x18, 10x8, 2-16x16, 6 1/2x14 snare. Zildjian Platinum "TV" series 14 hats, 17-18 crash, 22 ride.

The kit I used with Danny Wilde was my personal Pearl MMX endorsement kit. Same sizes as above with an additional 18 China, and 16 crash, All Zildjian "A" series. Remo white coated Ambassadors top, Clear Ambassadors bottom. Kick had ebony front, pinstripe 3 beater side. Snare was Ludwig Supraphonic 6 1/2-14 white coated Ambassador top. All Pearl 855 series hardware, Roc 'n Soc throne.

Wow, even if it were just a pantomimed session, being able to meet Joe Cocker must've been awesome.

I'm American, but have lived here in the Philippines for 7 years and even did a few gigs with Wally Gonzales and I used to be the drummer for David Pomeranz in the 90's, so I'm almost pinoy in my heart, hee hee...
