well, hopefully the ROI on your old control 24 is going to justify an upgrade to the new one...

FYI! The new C24 is almost USD 2k more expensive than the old one. Plus they don't have the Focusrite pre amps anymore and there are no exchange paths to it. Every nuts and bolts on the new C24 has been designed and built by DIGIDESIGN from the ground up. It won't ship until probably the end of the month.

You can still however, exchange Pro controls and Control 24s for an ICON.

And BTW, the old Control 24 is not Gray and Blue, it's Black and Gray. :-D

cheers!

yes, it isn't blue - like in the sense that something is royal blue, powder blue or navy blue but its definitely not a deep gloss black either. to be a stickler about it, up close i would say it is a deep blackish blue in a matte finish and that was what I meant - at least that is how mine looks to me. could it be the light? maybe. could it be all those years of looking at Pantone swatches? who knows?

I haven't looked at the new specs for the new Control 24 but I've received a few bulletins about local Digidesign workshops for demos on the new gear. I don't think I'll switch if they took out the pres. I use the pres for drums and, personally, I don't have anything wrong with the unit anyway. During the time I've had it, I've only had the Digi guy come in to service it once and that was it. ICON? It would be nice if I could allocate the money and space for it but I will use what I got for now. Like the saying goes: don't fix what ain't broke.

Just want to add an immediate announcement on this post.

JB Music is now the exclusive distributor for Pro Tools LE here in the Philippines. Effective this month.

DMI and Challenge will no longer sell Pro Tools LE. They will only cater to the Pro Tools HD Market.

i love 'em - they were my first tube pres and even though they get a bad rap on the pro boards for not being as clean as, say, API, Great River or the other stuff out there, I get great results with them for R&B, Triphop and everything else. They have a tad bit more headroom than my UA 2-610s which is another favorite pre that I use quite a lot. Ikaw? Have any specific ones that you find are your "go-to" pres? I always like knowing what other people use and for what type of music to give me something to think about when I work on other projects. I was listening to my parent's old APO Hiking society and Jose Mari Chan stuff and I really like how the APO vocals sound.

Hi all

This link will take you to where you can see some good demos from the AES show floor. Special mention - demo of the new Elastic Time feature of 7.4 and the new C|24.

If you have a slow connection...wait till it plays the first time (keep volume off) and then when you play it the second time...all smooth

Cheers

I was listening to my parent's old APO Hiking society and Jose Mari Chan stuff and I really like how the APO vocals sound.

the ones i have are the pendulum quartet (my favorite for vocals and snares), an LA610, a joemeek twinq (my favorite for guitars, especially with its 'iron' mode), and a pair of alpha channels (which i use for practically anything, even for EQing. i still have others that i use for tracking drums -- fmr's rnp, a pair of vtb-1s, a pair of mic200's, a phonic t8100, an art mpa gold -- which used to be my best preamps...

actually, i was really saving up for a 737 when a friend sold me the quartet for a ridiculously low price.

sorry for the OT.

fyi, most of jose mari chan's stuff (the old stuff) were recorded at ad&ad studios here there are no plug-ins and hard discs, just honest to goodness neve boards, plates, and tons of yummy outboard gear. too bad they've closed a long time ago), audio captain (also closed), cinema audio (was sold to FPJ, then closed)...

pendulum makes some great, great outboard gear. i've used a quartet a couple of times at some studios and they are amazing pres. I know they came out with an updated version of the old blue faced ones but i haven't seen or used one yet. i don't keep up with the gear stuff as much as I used to since I really only stick to stuff that I know really well - i may experiment now and then if I am not as pressed for time on a project.

it is sad that all those studios closed. the songs were really well done and I can only imagine being in those control rooms with all that classic gear. to this day, I always get excited when I get to work in a well stocked recording studio with great outboard gear to tweak and play around with...

OT alert.

@abyss -- actually, the studio that had kick ass stuff and a great room was the studio called tasha, which burned down around 1988.

i think you're talking about the quartet mercenary edition. yes, it's an impressive piece of gear. and a very pricey one. i went to guitar center in hollywood yesterday and drooled over the outboard stuff i saw there. oh yeah, and the really, really nice drum kits... oh, don't get me started...

i'm going to run away with the OT flag here:)

you a drummer too? i know Hazel is but aside from her, I think the other people on here either play guitar or piano as their primary instrument. GC Hollywood has some great gear for drums and guitars. If you ever get a chance to go to Gruhns in Nashville, I highly recommend it..it is my favorite guitar store hands down.

I played drums for years but piano is actually my primary instrument. I cut my teeth playing live and touring on drums before trying my hand as a DJ. playing bass and guitars. I have a couple kits right now - a Mapex Orion in birch and a DW in maple. I love the way they sound but there are so many great drums out there now from small custom shops like Truth that the choices are so tempting. I tried one of their custom kits with the wood hoops and it had a solid tone that was to die for! Ugh....I just dont have the space or the funds for another kit.

drummer here

nope. i'm primarily a keyboardist... who has 2 drumkits (catalina maple - 22, 10, 12, 15, 16 -- and a masters custom - 22, 13, 16, 18) and several snares (more or less, 15). actually, my drummer is the very talented rickson ruiz.

frustrated drummer here. i'd love to start learning the guitar too, but for some reason, my guitar player keeps discouraging me (i've sequenced a few stuff that's fooled his ears... haha... he told me it'll be very dangerous for him if i start playing the guitar)

still OT... i was able to watch Oz Noy (really good jazz/fusion guitar player) last night at the catalina club at sunset blvd... unbelievable! although he doesn't play with them on a regular basis, it was dave weckl who played drums last night.

i've seen Oz and Dave play a few times. Amazing musicians.

that is a lot of snares:) i only have a few that I keep and rotate depending on what project I am doing at a given time. I do have a healthy guitar addiction though and I had about 20 at one time. That was ridiculous. I now keep a manageable 12 or so give or take a couple.

I haven't GASsed in a long time and a I try not to anymore because there is more than enough stuff around the studio to keep me learning and busy. If there is anything I hate it is learning a piece of gear from the ground up and getting new gear keeps me from getting into the nitty gritty of a music project as quickly as possible. But....if there is one thing I'd love to GAS for its one of those Kyma synths. I got a chance to play with one a few years ago and I can't even imagine the music possibilities with that thing.

well, i guess at some point GASsing really has to stop so music can be made again, even at least for a little while. i've been meaning to let go of some of the snares, but i haven't really decided which one.

the keyboard i'm lusting for is the nord electro 2. i haven't seen any keyboard that makes me lose sleep though. i've lost a lot of sleep of pres, snares, cymbals, and mics... maybe i'm a drummer by heart. i should try devoting some time learning to play it, after all, i've got a few...

i'll be on my way back to manila in a few hours... what's in my luggage? well, more than 20 drum heads, 2 pairs of drumsticks, 9 packs of moongels, a splash cymbal (ozone). the only keyboard there is a creative labs prodikeys, which i use for notation.

it used to be that my justification for having so many drums, snares and cymbals, was that i wanted to come up with my own drum library. well, hopefully i could work on that one sometime in the near future...

sorry for the tremendous OT...

you are right and making music is actually the reason why I've had a pretty good time not GASsing at all. I find making music with nothing more than a pad, paper and acoustic guitar a very fulfilling way to get music done.

I've tried the Nord electro - great keys. I can't say I have been lusting for a keyboard lately but, then again, I haven't been to the stores as much to browse.

When I travel, I usually have just a couple of things with me - a Mac loaded with Reason and Recycle and a small Editorol USB keyboard. It is small enough that I can work at the airport terminal, at the library or in the airplane when I am not snoozing:)
