defo, yes! you should see our apprentice now.... not only is our padawan, Sammy, turning out to be one heck of a knob twiddler  :-D  , but he sure can pound the drums into submission, too!  (and that's with using toothpicks!)

being a knob twiddler is a good thing. especially when you are working with amps. here is an old session picture:

wow! i wonder what the sound would be like if all the amps were played together. probably, trying to duplicate that experience on a recording would be a task that'd be close to impossible.

loud, i would imagine. i remember that the guitarist and I spent an afternoon working with the guitar tones before settling on a set of amp/guitar combinations for clean, slightly dirty and crunch sounds for recording. we found that although having a 4x12 was awesome ...using 2x12 cabs in the live room proved to produce a more focused sound with the array of heads that we had on hand.

EQing, specially vocals

The key to recording vocals is to capture it with the intention that you probably don't want to eq it later on. That's why it's very important to match your mic and preamp combination with the person being recorded; not all mics are suitable with all people.

Second, the vocalist must know how to "work" the mic. If one spends a lot of time managing levels with vocal tracks, then it's likely that the vocalist is either not familiar with the mic or the gain staging is not properly set up.

Third, the room plays a very important part with vocals. Improper isolation is often the weakness of most amateur recordings, next is dealing with room reflections. While vocals are often recorded dry, not taking the room into consideration can introduce reflections and resonances that can cause problems when trying to fit the vocal track into the mix.

In short, preparation is key when capturing a good vocal take. With the right combinations of the above, you may not even need to eq vocals.

It got me curious enough to join the HC forums. Besides... that's Craig Anderton's home roost... this guy's reviews on Sonar is always phenomenal.

Go to Fully Booked @ Serendra.  There are a couple of books there about recording (I already picked up "Sound System Design, 3rd Ed." by Davis and Patronis, "Sound Systems:Design and Optimization" by McCarthy and "Architectural Acoustics" by Marshall Long.  Cost me a fortune).  Another place to go is at Megamall, 5th Floor, Alexan Marketing.  They normally have nice books on recording technology.  If I am not mistaken, they have the latest copy of Bruce Bartlett's "Practical Recording Techniques."  Good luck in your search.

sir KitC,

is there any software or VST plugin that would make a direct acoustic guitar record sound awesome!?
There is no tone. There is only music.

Unfortunately, plugins can either enhance or dirty up a recording, so the recording has to be awesome to begin with. That said, you can only go so far with a DI recording of an acoustic. You really have to go the extra mile by miking it with a really good mic and preamp, then the acoustic has to be a very good one as well. The problem with DI recordings of acoustics are the piezo pickups themselves, unless you are using Furman or similar pickups.

@kitc - i think you meant fishman...

i think fishman's aura system makes the sound of a guitar plugged via a pickup (preferably fishman's as well) sound pretty close to a miked up guitar... haven't tried one yet, but at least that's the claim. another thing, it's not a plug-in.
