They said that tube amps are the holy grail of tone. Having a lot of tube amps in the market, is there such thing as bad sounding tube amp? And if there is, what amp model/line?

Siguro papangit lang ang tube amp kapag di mo type yung voicing ng amp or di pasok sa hinahanap mong tunog...Kumbaga kapag di pasok sa taste mo.

Exception to the rule po yung mga unknown brands with unknown preamp and power tubes.

Kase minsan, di masyado maganda ang tube amp pero kapag nag tube swap ka eh gumaganda na rin ang tunog... nandiyan pa yung driver or speaker swap to a branded one like eminence speaker with alnico magnets etc.

Ang tube amp kase lalo na kapag P2P or point to point ang wiring is up to sawa ang mods na pwede mo gawin diyan.

Minsan pangit ang tunog ng amp dahil pangit din ang pagka bias ng tubo or pangit ang tunog pero yun pala kailangan lang magpalit ng ilang resistors or capacitor value to smoothen or tweak the voicing ng overall EQ/tone/sound ng amp...

Andami variables... 

Pero that being said, meron nga talagang pangit na STOCK tube amp... Para sa kin yung mga de tubo na may cheap 8-10" ceramic speaker.

Example ko is yung Laney Cub 8 and Peavey royal 8 ata yun? Ang sagwa ng tunog... But again... maybe it's just me?

Pero OTOH type ko yung tunog ng Laney Cub 12 yung meron reverb and as for the Peavey, I like the tone of Peavey valveking 112 lalo na nang pinalitan ko ng JJ's yung stock ruby tubes.

There is nothing wrong with the stock ruby tubes it's just that the JJ's has better sound.

Yung JCM900 4100 head ko di ko masyado trip ang tunog ngayon.  Baka bias lang pero wala akong oras magkalikot.  Bitin e, ayaw bumuga ng apoy.    Parang daig pa ng Peavey Bandit.

A few weeks ago, plano ko sana bumili ng first tube amp ko. Kaya na post ako sa this or that thread. Then along the way, some says, wag ito. Yun dapat or ito mas maganda. Then I also tried yung Peavey royal 8. Di ko trip yung tunog. So I thought na kung may pangit na SS amp. Meron din sigurong panget na all tube amp....

ayoko sa tube amps na less than 10 watts. tunog plastic cya saken. di makacut din sa mix (if 2 gitarista). that was a tiny terror thru a 1x12 orange cab. the lil night train was better but still....

The topic is quite subjective tho. So pwedeng trip nyo yung amps na di ko trip, like maybe the Peavey ValveKing. haha. Yung naman Cub 8 kasi feeling ko hindi kaya i-handle nung speaker yung power.

Oo naman. Hindi lang naman yung tube lang   but also circuit design, component tolerances, speaker at pati na cabinet at material na ginamit. Parang acoustic guitar lang yan, pareho lang ng string pero mas magandang tumunog sa ibang guitar.

Mas masarap sa tenga ang distortion ng tube amp kaysa solid state.

That said, different tube amp models has different parts and designs so they will also differ in sound. Iba ang tubes na gamit ng fender sa marshall so expectedly magkaiba ang tunog. Mas buo and tunog ng 12" speakers kaysa 8". Mas lalo na kung 4 x 12". May nabasa din ako na depende sa output transformer.

Subjective ang tunog so what may be bad sounding to you may be heaven sa iba.

yep. most of the topics here are subjective. pati ang gitara sa iba panget lahat ung sa kanya lang maganda, ung mga tipong ganun haha.

Or something you have now that you should have bought the other one na lang sana.

ako kasi, 1st tube ko, ibby tsa15h.. did not regret.

pero to be honest, i tried a/b-ing it to my maxon gx10. (tsa15h and gx10 are both tubescreamer amps) habol na habol ng gx10 yung tunog ng drive ng tsa15h... pero, olats pa rin talaga sa cleans ng tsa yung gx10.. not really a turn-off pero i still think na gaganda pa yung tunog ng head ko pag napaltan ko na ng tubes.. btw, naka 5-watt mode pa lang yung tsa ko ha.. it shines really well pag naka full 15 watts (tried plugging it sa mga cabs kina r_chino).. di ko mamaximize yung tsa kasi wala pa akong malaking cab... currently plugged sa cab ng maxon ko.. (which has good 8-in speaker btw)

My first tube amp was a Peavy Classic 30... It sounded good when I tried it, that's why I bought it. I would not have bought it if I didn't like the sound.

Pero eventually, I dug deeper as to what it can do and got to know the amp better.. Preference changed, I wanted something different, I sold it... Got a different amp. Now, I think the C30 sounds ok. 

I tried a Laney Cub head thru a matching Cub2x12 at JB one time. I was not impressed. But that doesn't mean I got turned off with tube amps.

Like what others said, tube amps have different circuit designs, tube type also play a huge role, speakers, etc... In the end, searching for a good tube amp is no different from searching for a nice sounding solid state amp.

There aint really bad tube amp, it depends to the player and his genre or music style like, Marshall is created for hard rock, blues rock etc, Fender for jazz, blues, country etc etc, Mesa Boogie for Metal types or high gain. Laney amp is created then you don't like it, well it is not for you but for him. Parang music genres lang

A tube amp for me is an entirely different beast. Kapag nagtransition ka from solid states to tubes baka manibago ka sa sensitivity at dynamic response nya. 2 weeks mahigit pa lang na nasakin tong laney cub12r (used, very good condition), nanibago talaga ako sa buga nya.... so hindi ko muna ididismiss as "panget" kasi hindi ko pa naman syang natetest sa iba't ibang gigging situation...

I've had two speaker replacements dito. Scumback H55 and Eminence Governor. Both, malaki difference sa tunog, lalo na sa volume.
