Title: Custom Acrylic / Carbon Fiber / Fiberglass Drums and Percussion Thread *merged*
Post by: peeves24 on January 03, 2007, 02:41:31 PM
LOOKS
you be the judge. sorry i still cant set it up properly since i dont have money to buy L rod arms and tension rods. the claws and tension rods attached are from my pink kit. i did get to buy the claws last sunday but the tension rods that came with it dont fit the lugs.

toms are 10x7 and 14x11
bass is 18x16

more pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/27185619@N00/sets/72157594417578694/

SOUND
the 10" and 14" toms are deep and full sounding. it resonates very very well and the suspension mounts really do help a lot. no need to wallop the drums make it sing.

the 18" bass drum lacks oomph and its the size that is to blame. all i get is a big boomy sound. im still trying to get a thud sound from the heads. if all else fails then i'll consider porting the resonant.

i paired the kit with a pearl 14x3.5 steel free floater and got a perfect match volume wise. i tried using my other 14x5 maple snare but its too loud for the small kit and i needed to control my hits to balance the sound.

if you are curious if what acrylic sounds like, my answer would be, there's no such thing as "acrylic sound". i for one cant distinguish it from wood. maybe if i change heads to something im very familiar with like pinstripes i might notice a difference but im not that anal and the drums sound good as they are right now. you can distinguish wood, steel and acrylic on snares but its not apparent on the toms and bass.

PRICE
NOT CHEAP  :x i know many guys would still ask so the price is 26000 pesos for the shell pack (for the uninitiated, shell pack is the term used when buying drums only without hardware). what you see on the pic is all the 26k got me. i bought parts and hardware in a span of 18 months before finally buying the shells last xmas.

NOTES
all the shells are 1/4" thick with 1/4" reinforcement rings. cutting the bearing edges on the shells was a biyatch due to the shear thickness. the reinforcement rings is necessary for strength, it helps the shell stay round and also hold the glued seam together.

aquarian drumheads are too heavy if you are used to remo ambassadors. for the toms, i used double thins for batter and classic clear for the resonant. the classic clear heads are very good but the double plies are too muffled the toms sound boxy. i personally like open tom sounds and i didnt like the double thins at all. the classic clear heads were perfect, no muffling needed, open sounding but not ringy.

evans emad on the batter side and evans resonant on the errr...resonant side. i wasted money here since i liked the sound of the emad without the external muffler. i should have just bought something else.

NOT FOR GIGGING
2 reasons really, first is that its too heavy to lift and second is that you'd be really ticked if somebody bangs on it or you make a mistake and ding it.

REGRETS
i drilled the bass spurs too high up on the shell. the result is that it raises the drum only 1" off the ground when fully extended. this kills the idea of using a bass drum riser on the pedal side so the beater hits the center of the drum. i may have to build a craddle or just buy another beater and cut it down, either way, i cant do anything now since im bankrupt.

i should have went with a 20" or a 22" bass drum but i dont have a choice since i already bought the 18" heads and hoops more than a year ago.

special thanks to wax_static for sharing the acrylic source  :-D

26k for everything - 6.3k for shells = 19.7k for hardware+heads. Not bad! Matinong hardware na ito. Dalhin mo 'to sa sunod na EB ha?

Pa-share naman ng contact :)

nice review pao! At sobran ganda talaga tignan. :-o

hm. about sa bass drum try mo higpitan yugn batter ng konti.  nung bago kit ko kasi boomy sya at walang thud sound. Pero nagtagal parang balanced na yung tunog.  Baka kailangan lang mapalo yung head for a few weeks.

by the way, was at yupangco earlier. jp and bea tested the 10" tom side by side with a session kit.

my observations:

- acrylic 10x7 is louder than 10x8 maple
- acrylic has more sustain even with a dead sounding head
- the session tom has controlled sound while my acrylic has more spread, its like playing inside a cave without having echoes
- my double ply head sucks tone, pearl protone single ply > aquarian double thin
- my 10" sounds like a 12", i guess its because of the double ply head again

hands down, the session tom owns my acrylic tom on recording. live playing without mics, the acrylic owns the session since the acrylic projects more

hope jp and bea post their observations as well

*fishball at rc cola sa gilid ng yupangco ASTIG! or maybe coz i missed eating them

its on the kit and you know what happens afterwards...TEST DRIVE!

didnt have much time to play with it coz its already quarter to 8 when i got it set up...sounds like a steel snare without the metallic pang. its bright, it has lots of crack but it lacks body. maybe a heavier batter head will give it what its missing.

How the hell did you get that?

bigay sa kin ni santa  :-D but i was a naughty boy last year so he asked me to pay for it  :x

bought parts and built the kit myself

what's a review without a soundclip  :-D

http://www.raketship.com/drumblog/test4.mp3

doodles lang kanina...listen to the bass drum, just the bass drum...not the playing hehehe dont expect a solo coz i cant do that

recording setup:
1 pair behringer c2 condenser in XY config above my head
behringer ub1202
behringer uca202 usb interface
adobe audition
monitored thru 1 pair of tiny speakers built inside [gooey brown stuff] laptop

no eq or any processing

Nice one Pao!    Mukhang OKs naman ang bass drum, parang tama lang for its size.

Aling snare gamit mo?  Acrylic nga ba, bright kasi ng tunog.
Title: Re: acrylic drums review
Post by: peeves24 on January 20, 2007, 11:29:06 AM

Title: Re: acrylic drums review
Post by: peeves24 on January 23, 2007, 08:35:03 PM
first time kong na setup sila as a kit ngayong gabi. wala pa rin L-rod kasi wala talaga pambili. kanina ko lang naiisip na ikabit na lang yung old tom mount nung maya drums ko para magamit din yung pearl-type tom arms. kaya ayan:

problema ko pa rin yung 5 lugs para ma tune ko na ng maayos yung drums. very promising yung tunog at very wide ang tuning range, from deep to bright sound

Bro, mga magkano kaya yung acrylic shell na 36"long x 18"diameter x 3/4" thick?
Title: Re: acrylic drums review
Post by: peeves24 on January 23, 2007, 09:04:55 PM
di nila kaya yung 3/4" thick. hirap daw ibend nun. 1/4" na yung pinakamakapal na kaya nila

yung sukat ng pinakamalaking shell e yung hindi magexceed sa laki ng isang sheet ng acrylic 8 feet by 4 feet

as usual, di ko rin alam yung price  :-D

kaya pero pangit kalalabasan nun. hindi sya clear na clear dahil puro air bubbles yung magdidikit na layer. di rin advisable yung ganung kakapal kasi sobrang bigat na.

latest update...

on hold muna ang acrylic drums ko for now. kailangan makahanap ng workshop na malayo sa sibilisasyon  :-D so the snares im planning to sell will be on indefinite hold

in the meantime, patikim ko muna to...

bangbus' 10,12,14 toms with 20x20 bass drum
the other small shell is a 10 for porksoda

^^^ sorry ngayon ko lang nakita post mo

what do you mean jr size?

so far clear lang talaga. i wish i can ask the source for different colors but clear is the only one thick enough for shell use.

di ko pa kayang mag estimate, just check the price and sizes of my kit from the first page. it will vary depending on what parts and configuration you want.

i may have to give the idea a rest for this year and just do small things until i can find a more reliable supplier. funding is also too low to start accepting orders unless of course, the client will buy the parts before bringing it to me

this week sana mapapa engrave ko na pero kailangan ko muna mamundok ng weekend. post na lang ako ng pic 2 weeks from now.

as for the 13x6.5 snare or any other drum you want custom made, wala talaga ako idea sa pricing. as mentioned before, hinuhulaan lang nung source ko yung presyo nya so pwedeng mura ngayon o mahal as bangbus and pork soda already experienced. they got a better deal though than when i bought my shells. kailangan muna mapagawa yung shell bago mapresyuhan

MGA TSONG TOL DUDES! PAALALA LANG PO.

Mr. Paolo Vivas is one of the nicest people i've ever met sa buong buhay ko. And i believe what he is doing is Excellent! And i know people who worked with him will agree that making custom drums is no joke. Nakikita ko sha making those drums and super BOW ako sa kanya. Kaya eto lang masasabi ko.

Let's bless this man of INTEGRITY!!!

What do i mean?

Your tawad is okay pero chong, isipin naman naten na pinapawisan ren sha sa mga drums na yan.
You're not just paying this guy for a snare drum or what so ever. You're paying his "CRAFTMANSHIP" which is to me PRICELESS.

Kaya mga drum brothers, Let's support this GUY! Let's bless this man! Okay?

Cheers to Paolo Vivas!!!

Okay?

In my recent "uwi" to the Philippines, I happen to meet a lot of extraordinary individuals in various walks of life and one of them happens to be Paolo Vivas. I admire peeves not only for his dynamic grasp in playin and customisin drums but also as a person. nver a dull moment hangin out with this fella!

I believe that he is currently sorting out his Drum business and realising his innovative drum ideas. Let's extend our support. I can vouch for his skill and products! Highly recommended.

Pare anythin related to business, you can count on me to provide you with sound advises, free of charge. hehe

Third! Aside from being a great friend, pag kausap ko yan, lalo na about sa drums makikita mo talaga yung passion nya.  Nagaapoy ang mga mata nyan.  Kahit wlang tulugan, kahit malayo... pupunta sya.

Sandy talaga. Sinumulan kasi yung drama. hehe. :-D

back to topic...acrylic drums ulit

change of plans

hindi magpupush thru yung complete drums...

punta na ko sa plan b

simple lang

bili kayo parts, dalin nyo sa bahay, i'll build it then charge you a very small fee worthy of a box of krispy kreme. yung fee po ay para sa consumables like sand paper, drill and router bits na napupudpod (router bits kailangan ko pa bilin from the US). hopefully, id earn enough to get better equipment too

have put thought into that bro... but pao advised me that the difference in sound and volume of the 10" acrylic might not go well with my fernando, i think the acrylic is much louder dunno i forgot what pao told me hehehe, i was actually contemplating before on a 14" and a 10" acrylic to expand my fernando but master pao advised me otherwise... if i was to have peeves make a 14" and a 10" do you know where i can get LROD mounts to match those already on my fernando?

FAQ it

how do i order?
please dont ask me how much from the start. ask yourself first what YOU WANT. write it down, it helps! now go visit a lazer store nearest you. look at the parts you want to use. ask them for price quotes. now you have an idea of how much you need to pay up front but dont buy them yet.

set a meeting with me in person by sending me emails via ( paolovivas @ gmail . com ) but pm's here are fine. i want to know your style of music and the sound you want to achieve from your drum. then we'll discuss your options, how to lower your cost, where to get the parts you cant find, love life, current frustrations, the top 10 pinoy drummers, your current level in drumming, if your kick drum is empty, how to shred...

after our meeting, you'll have a clearer idea of what you'll get. now go back to lazer and buy all the parts for your drum. i'll go order a shell. when the shell comes in, i'll call you. bring all the parts you bought to me. i'll work on the drum and call you when its done. it takes less than a day to build a drum but of course, it depends upon my availability and my neighbor's weekend vacation plan =) you come back for the drum, test it.

if your not happy, i'll work on it again then test it again until you are happy. we can do this as long as your shell can take it. but of course, after i made you happy, you have to give me my talent fee. everybody happy? i hope so...

how much?
sorry im not very helpful at all when it comes to pricing. my deal with a source for stable pricing is not going to push thru. prices WILL fluctuate even if two guys order the same specs a month in between. isipin nyo na lang parang dollar exchange rate yan, minsan mababa, minsan sobrang taas at malay natin kung sino nagsasabi kung pataas o pababa.

another thing, its CUSTOM. the term custom itself, you cant put a value on that unless you specifically know what you want. as i've indicated at the very first page of this thread, my 3-piece jazz kit cost 26k. why is that? because the heads alone cost me 9k. does that mean everybody else should pay the same steep price? no. its upto you to think where you can cut cost on. that's one benefit of customization, you dont have to pay the same 9k price for heads, just pick something else.

what sizes can i make?
any size. as long as you can get the hardware, i can build it

do i need to make a deposit?
no.

what do i need to bring?
i prefer you buy all the required parts.

if i order, how long does it take to have 1 drum made?
2 weeks tops. here's why: there is a 1 week turn around for me to order and get the shell. if you have all the parts already, drilling and bearing edge cutting will take half a day.

do i have to pay you for labor cost?
yes. to make things simple:

bearing edge cutting and drilling (both sides)
Php 300 - 14" drums and smaller
Php 500 - 15" drums and larger

do you do refinishing?
yes but we need a lot of discussion about it and i cant give you any price until i see what needs to be done

so really, how much for a 10" tom?
you'll need a little over 5k to have one made and it doesnt have a suspension mount yet. a 10" suspension mount like the one on my jazz kit costs about 1500 from vinci (vincher here at philmusic) let's be realistic here. dont expect to have a drum for less than 2k. it aint gonna happen, well except if the drum is really really small and you have all the parts from some other drum to use.

how much for a lug/hoop/tension rod?
i really dont know, i have not bought anything of significance from lazer since last year. also, i do not work for lazer or any other store. call them

LAZER
fairview: 418-7569
Festival: 850-6283

thanks to mike for providing the numbers  :-D

why lazer? can i buy parts from yupangco? jb?
at the moment, lazer is the best source for cheap parts. they have everything you need though you might do some store hopping to complete your parts. yupangco sells original pearl drums components, you can use these parts but you will pay for a premium. you do get what you pay for you know. jb? hmmm nevermind they dont sell parts except for gibraltar accessories.

why cant i sell parts?
i dont have the capital, this is a hobby and NOT A BUSINESS! i wont definitely get rich from asking 300 a pop. unless you, yes you the reader, are filthy rich with lots of moolah to burn and want to invest by bringing in parts then be my guest or rather, partner  :-D . just let me tell you now that rate of return is zero or just too negligible to even look at

that's why its hobby

man, your drums are expensive! what do you have to say to that?
i dunno. it just is. i cant buy wholesale for parts. every part to be used is paid for in retail price. there's no such thing as a "volume discount" when you buy in lazer or any other retail store.

i cant find/buy a part here, can you order it for me abroad?
sure and maybe. im cutting down my credit cards, if the item is below 100 dollars, sure i can get it for you. you will have to pay me the exact amount that will appear on my credit card bill plus shipping to be fair. im not going to charge you extra for it since im going to earn usage points from your purchase. for over 100 dollars, go to vinci =)

well-said.

to add: customising comes at a price no matter what product or place in the world you are in. one cannot expect customised products to cost like mass produced products that exhibit economies of scale as shown in figure 1:

at the end of the day, you'll get what you paid for- a more direct and personal influence on the output in lieu with your taste & preferences as well as to some extent, the cost.

so go for it, achieve your dream setup! acrylic add-ons will look great on your kit (check out porksoda's). above all, they loook and sound the business!

Call Peeves24 today and expand your kit or drum collection to your heart's content!

master peeves how bout posting the prices of hardwares you've already acquired before just so the guys can have a ballpark estimate on how much their custom gear can cost... I know you've bought stuff sa lazer...

lugs and tension rods
hoops

Title: Re: acrylic drums review
Post by: peeves24 on March 14, 2007, 10:45:19 AM
i bought stuff yes, but that was a year and a half ago...i dont keep receipts  :-D

i also didnt buy the parts for the latest projects, bangbus and pork soda did.

one more thing, lazer doesnt have a standard pricing scheme. e.g. if i buy a bass drum claw from festival mall, it will cost me 85 bucks, but buy the same part in market market and it will only cost you 79

its best you call or visit them to get accurate pricing

I called Lazer Fairview and Festival Mall today:
Hoops
10" 4hole(fairview) 6hole(festival): php223
14" 6hole, 10hole(fairview only): php255

for the lugs
the cheapest they have is php 35
and the tension rods are 10-15 php.

contact numbers:
fairview: 418-7569
Festival: 850-6283

dont buy the 35 peso lugs unless you have matching tension rods on hand

kasi i made up my mind on makin a 10" tom, so kung maganda din yung snare na acrylic. sasabay ko na, para sabay ko makuha diba?

biased ako sa metal snares, i really dont like acrylic snares (patay negosyo hehehe) i do love my 8" acrylic snare coz it sounds so good. im not patting my back, its just that even my sister who hates me when i play drums came up to me to say that it sounds good. does that count?

better ask wax_static or gep about it. they have more experience with acrylic snares than i do

nagpunta ako sm fairview kanina sabi nila yung

10" hoop 4 holes = 210php

still no love with the 13x6, i had it repaired but when i was putting the lugs on, it broke again. so i ordered a new shell and i'll keep the broken one (to be a demo unit). hassle lang dun sa umorder, kailangan nya na kasi yung snare at hindi ko madeliver agad

still no love with the 13x6, i had it repaired but when i was putting the lugs on, it broke again. so i ordered a new shell and i'll keep the broken one (to be a demo unit). hassle lang dun sa umorder, kailangan nya na kasi yung snare at hindi ko madeliver agad

anyway, eto naman yung kasabay nung nasirang 13x6, prjm14's 13x3 snare

eey mga bro im selling this repaired shell for 1000 (wala tawad - last price - period). nasa shop pa nirerepair ulit, this time may strip ng ilalagay dun sa seam para hindi na mag split at kukunan ko sya ng pic once i get it back next week. it was already drilled for hardware. i originally paid 1500 for the shell but i have to liquidate this just to recover some of the cost for the new shell i ordered as a replacement.

pm me if you are interested and i can send you pics of the hardware you need to buy for this shell. i will assemble it for you at no extra cost besides the 1k for the shell

its going to be a 13x6 snare, i just unwrapped it and then it snapped while im holding it. i was supposed to deliver this tomorrow afternoon but now im not so sure. oh boy...

kuya pao! ano pedeng alternative sa suspension mounting?
Title: Re: Custom Acrylic Drums thread
Post by: peeves24 on July 05, 2007, 09:18:18 AM

this is a nice article on suspension mounts http://www.drumjunction.com/tom_mounts.html

check out jb megamall, meron ako nakita dati dun na suspension mounts for 10" and 12" toms. black sya similar sa gretsch mounts na gamit sa blackhawk ata before maging GTS mounts. i think it was 800 each only but you will still need to attach a tom holder. yung mount attaches to two tension rods then it has a rubber foot that makes contact with the shell. wala ako makitang pic e

@alvin_11... acrylic shell made from MAC tend to have "strech marks" or "banat" its the result the heating and forming it from a flat acrylic borad into a cylinder.. i think its i-repairable...

yes pwede ayusin ulit. just take good care of your snare, iwasan mabagsak.

kaya. basta may nakakabit na heads on both sides...echoing wax's sentiment: why would you do that?

by the way, if it gets damaged from that stunt, who would want to repair it? its obvious abuse and misuse. pardon me saying but that's so uncool  love your gear bro

and how much for a whole kit?

i dont know exactly how much. it all depends on what you want. my 2 toms and 18" bass drum cost me 26k. i made a kit for bangbus 3 toms and 20x20 bass that reached 40k. drums pa lang yun. walang pedals, walang stands, wala kahit ano

eto lang aabutin ng 40k mo
(http://farm1.static.flickr.com/53/404647920_fe04362547.jpg)

its cheaper to buy a midlevel kit like a ludwig accent cs or gretsch catalina maple

cute tingnan

if you want it purely for looks then go for it but sound-wise, it doesnt turn me on. every drum is loud but i cant get the sound i want from them. i can only recommend acrylic bass drums, i really dont like them for toms and snare

wala ako kwentang salesman no?

i always try to discourage people from getting acrylic drums. some may like the sound, most may not. i know i dont like the sound of plastic but i will still build it if you want me to. just dont say i didnt tell you so  :-D

fiberglass drums!!! hmmmm ok naman ang sound nya! it can be warm if you want it to be or it can sound metallic if you want it too depends sa tuning mo it can actually sound like a gretsch maple drums or it can sound like birch drums depends really sa tuning and of course the proper drum heads and its easy to tune as well! yung drums na gamit ni rickson sa video from youtube is made by my father tito marquez is his name call him at 7249874 or better yet you can visit his house para meron kyo first hand experience sa fiberglass drums, personally i like the sound i use a 10" fiberglass tom and a 13x5 kevlar snare both made by my father and they sound fantastic not being bias.

Based on my own experiences, I find drums made of composite materials (acrylic, fiberglass, and other forms of plastics) having greater volume and projection.  So these drums are ideal for large venues and high volume situations.

Regarding its sound characteristic... Based on the stuff I read about it, I think its character would also depend on the specs and composition of the drumshell - its thickness, bearing edges, hardware, etc.  For example, I read the Modern Drummer review of the Tama Starclassic Mirage acrylic kit, and they said it's a bit warmer-sounding than most acrylic kits out on the market.  But still, it retains the high volume/projection common among acrylic/fiberglass kits.

Personally, I still love the warmth and feel of wood-shell drums.  I find it more natural and musical.

I believe Pearl Master series has carbon fiber inside and outside their maple shells. Not sure though how it would sound if you use purely carbon fiber. It could be close to having a sandwiched wood shell, maybe. No?
