ok not actually disbanded, and its not even verified but..
i read somewhere that Rico Blanco left Rivermaya. Could it be possible that someone here has more reliable info about this?

Rivermaya was a band as a result of auditions. They didn't know each other personally before they started. Ask Perf.

come to think of it ... as far as being born is concerned... rivermaya is not very different from backstreet boys. im not saying about the looks and the dance moves... just the process of "creating" a band by the power of management.

The band has had a history of relational concerns: the separate incidents of perf and nathan leaving, not to mention bamboo. We also have Kakoi's departure. To be honest, I saw it coming na rin in the last few albums. No band lasts forever.
Especially in rivermaya's case, it's easy to assume that because there are no news about the internals, it does not mean that everything is cool. And sometimes, it does not come down to the success of the concerts or gigs - it comes down to very personal things.
I give them the benefit of the doubt.

Rivermaya will be missed by fans worldwide. They would totally definitely disband and reunite, for their chief songwriter departed the band, much relative to the eraserheads' case. Kahit kumuha pa sila ng bagong singer, mabubuwag din sila dahil wala na yung chief songwriter nila.

i seriously doubt that rivermaya would be able to last without rico blanco. like stated in the article from PEP, rico blanco is the main creative force of the band. it would be exactly like the eraserheads without ely buendia. i could elaborate about this more but i see no reason for me to do so. as you're reading this, you probably already agree with me.
hence,
the thing that struck (and annoyed) me most would have to be the rumors floating about that the remaining band members are thinking of replacing rico blanco by doing the ROCKSTAR SUPERNOVA thing. like FTW?!??!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?! i'm really bloody pissed off! this is the band that has been labelled "ang banda nang bayan". the band that has literally written anthems for entire generations of filipinos! creative giants! they already earned their place in the OPM hall of fame! so why the hell would they opt to do an IDOL SEARCH for the next rico blanco1 and throw all that away?!?!?1/1/1 FTW?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! i would seriously lose ALL respect for rivermaya. i would even go as far as burning all of my rivermaya CD's, posters and other rivermaya related memorabilia. i don't think anyone could fill rivermaya's frontman spot as well as rico blanco did. i'd rather they disband and change their name to something else. don't taint the rivermaya name with this rockstar search [gooey brown stuff]. i'd even go as far as saying that i would rather all of them just quit music altogether and peddle taho and fishballs in the streets! even THAT would be better than to see them make a mockery of one of the greatest filipino bands in history on tv. smegging bastards! smegging bloody bastards!!!!!!!

Well to view and stuff, I support Rico in whatever pops in his head. But they will be greatly missed.
And I agree that a "INXS" kind of show that they might be planning(not yet confirmed anyway) would spoil the name. I guess they make MikeE or Japs the new frontman. Or make a quiet audition and then just suddenly announce the new band member.
As Rico said. His work is down. Well for my part I wish I have a stable band for the next 3 years so that I'll be able to be a part of the TRIBUTE ALBUM! q3 :wink: :mrgreen: naks!

i agree with your posts... but i can give you the reason why they are doing that:
MANAGEMENT
we all know that eventhough rico writes almost all the songs, he is not the leader of the band. thats the reason why i think:
RIVERMAYA SUCKS
yup... flame away, but before you do, hear me out:
i think rico blanco is very talented. i like the way he produced free. that guy has ears i tell you... very discriminating ones. he has his weaknesses like being too carried away with current popular bands, but i think thats all management BS pushing him in that direction.
i also think ex members, bamboo, perf (man, i still love that solo he did on 214. yeah yeah, i should move to his better stuff, hehe), nathan (awesome basslines!) and current member mark escueta (its amazing this guy can do those drum lines without calling attention to himself... thats real talent).
the reason why i think rivermaya sucks is because its not a BAND's band... it is however, a MANAGER's band
it operates that way because the ppl who make rivermaya tick are corporate ppl who probably couldnt play decent guitar (if they could, then why dont they have a band?). suits suck. they dont know squat about music, only the business side of it.
as not to trash management completely, i can say, that as a businessman, i admire their talents for keeping the name "rivermaya" afloat for so many years.
if the manager reads this, i really am in for a flame war and a possible law suit *lol* ... oh well, its not like im making up stories for them *lol* its just an opinion.
anyway, im glad rico quit... he could find new management and begin writing songs that are closer to his heart (hopefully) rather than fall into the trap of writing commercial jingles for money.

It's not a group of "corporate types," it's just Lizza Nakpil and she is hardly a "corporate type suit" , she's as odd and bohemian as they come. (ha ha, sorry Lizza!) It's just that the company ran Rivermaya professionally, contracts-wise, deals-wise, etc.
All pro bands should be run that way. And a lot of them are - Pancho (who was Lizza's ex-road manager) for Bamboo, Richard Tan for Parokya / Kamikazee, etc.
Band managers can learn a thing or two about 'em.
As for commercial risks, Rivermaya did some adventurous unheard of things with Lizza's management. Rivermaya Remixed ... the "Free" album - given away for free ... even the current album, covering obscure 80's songs.

yep, management is cool compared to other mangement firms who dont take as much risk.
the thing is, i really dont think a band is meant to last, especially if they are in the mainstream.
i still think rivermaya sucks because of the things i mentioned above - they made some 'wrong' moves too (like the new vocalist thing maybe) .. but they can justify it probably because, hey, it is their group.
but as to soften the blow of my previous post (i wont edit it) ... if i was gonna be mainstream, and be managed by someone, i think it would be rivermaya's group (they on the other hand, wont manage me, hahaha)....

palagay ko mas malaki kita nung mga tumutugtog sa mga hotel at cruise ship, i was offered to audition and if i make it, they will give me $3000 every 15th and 30th of a month to play drums for a cruise ship band, kaso i backed out kasi hindi ko kaya yung mga tinutugtog nila hahahaha ang hirap pang totoong musikero talaga yung tugtugan detalyado dapat note per note di ko kaya ganun :-D

yup, i think nathan, mark and bamboo (not sure) ang magkasama sa band, tapos sa iba nanggaling si rico and perf.
maya had so many line-up changes through the years it's hard to keep track. pero these line up was the best so far....

Actually I've known the Rivermaya management for years. It's not a group of "corporate types," it's just Lizza Nakpil and she is hardly a "corporate type suit" , she's as odd and bohemian as they come. (ha ha, sorry Lizza!) It's just that the company ran Rivermaya professionally, contracts-wise, deals-wise, etc.
All pro bands should be run that way. And a lot of them are - Pancho (who was Lizza's ex-road manager) for Bamboo, Richard Tan for Parokya / Kamikazee, etc.
Band managers can learn a thing or two about 'em.
As for commercial risks, Rivermaya did some adventurous unheard of things with Lizza's management. Rivermaya Remixed ... the "Free" album - given away for free ... even the current album, covering obscure 80's songs.

My apologies if my first impulse is to be irreverent.
But I am having difficulty processing some of the statements made on this forum...
Namely,
a) Rivermaya has a problem because I don't play guitar - and don't play in a band?
b) Through mysterious means, I manipulate the band in creating music they don't want to? And thus, Mr. Blanco is now safely away from my clutches.
c) That my being a so-called "oddball and bohemian" is an adequate defense against those charges?
Please let me know if my understanding is correct. And don't worry, I am not lawyering up and I only wear my "suit" when I go to bed at nights in my coffin.

Lizza - in my book being an oddball and bohemian is an adorable trait - and yes I would think pointing out such funky traits balance out the "suit-ness" of the job for the critics. Of course there are great rock managers like Paul McGuiness (U2) who look like they should be running a bank somewhere, but that doesn't make them any less effective.

all i meant to say was : it doesn't matter what instrument you do or don't play (sorry but that rankles...and as a matter of fact i can play mozart and beethoven on the piano as well as the kulintang, since my parents thought i should know one western and one filipino instrument to complete my education...)
and it doesn't matter what you wear or how non-conformist you are.
what does matter is how much you believe in your band's music, and how hard you are prepared to work to get it out there.
perhaps you should have a section for managers. i think this whole thing is sending a collective shiver down every manager's spines.
the star world features took me and warner almost TWO YEARS to work on...and that's not the worst.
i had confirmed our appearance at baybeats in singapore this august and for the last few months had been working on a SECOND SHOW timed for the same period.
again, this had taken many months of plotting...the producer wouldn't tell me who it was - just that i would be really happy when i found out and that it would be on august 1st. of course, when i had to say we were out because we had just lost our lead vocals...they told me who it was...(long sigh, sounds of breaking glass, lizza trying to leap out the window)..
now, I WILL GIVE YOU ONE GUESS AS TO WHO WE WERE SUPPOSED TO FRONT FOR...
ah, but the sun always rises, and tomorrow is a new day. hand me my suit :)

aaaah...the original plan was to launch a fashion line to be called "PURO BLANCO".... featuring all white t-shirts (and a complimentary line of identical designs in black) and referencing blanco's new monicker. i guess neither brand name really didn't fly in the focus groups and the fashion line was subsequently launched to our surprise as "DESIGNS BY RICO BLANCO."
mr. rono and i were deliberately watching from the sidelines as all of this was unfolding, mind you, sometime in march.
neither of us was really crazy about the idea but well, fashion design was something mr. blanco had wanted to do for a very long time...
("puro blanco" and the all-white theme were dreamed up by the human thinktank working with mr. blanco.) before we could do anything (either way) about it, we were handed a letter of resignation from mr. blanco and the rest, as they say, is (fashion) history.

WHAT IF... parang yung DVD na pirated where the old members of The Doors had a get together featuring front men from different bands (Ian Astbury from The Cult, Perry Farrell, etc) tapos isa syang TV special, album, DVD release atc. Rivermaya is not disbanded, umalis lang po si Rico Blanco for personal reasons. Ngayon designer na siya ng isang brand ng damit (Human) at, ayon sa isang litol berd, isa na daw electronica artist...

most post-rock bands (e.g. mogwai, explosions in the sky) don't have vocalists, yet they're still considered "bands".
besides, all remaining maya members can sing, so either one of them could be the vocalist... at least til they get a permanent replacement.

rivermaya should continue as i am so tired of hearing new bands doing covers even on the first or second album ....
ely and bamboo and onl and their akin peers should stay on the scene...this guys do provide some hope......for OPM.
