Title: Good Stores... Bad Stores
Post by: 16track on January 27, 2006, 07:39:23 AM
In my 30 years of playing- I have gone to just about every store in Metro Manila that sells any item that is guitar related. In a few cases- I have also visited several stores in the provinces as well. If I see a guitar on display I often take time to stop by and check the place out.

Some of those shops are a joy to visit as the the staff and service provided are simply top rate.... while many of the shops are just down right snooty or just so plain bad you'd swear never to give them your business again.

I would like to make clear that this is not to put down bad stores just for the sake of it--- but rather-- maybe one of their own staff [or owners] will read this and do what they can to implement changes. Constructive criticism.. in a way.

For the the good shops...  hope they also read this and do what they can to maintain or even furthere improve their services...

BTW... please include shops outside the country if you have expreriences with them as well.

Let me start.

I often visit Audiophile in Pioneer St in Mandaluyong. One of their staff-- Jaime-- is very accommodating. Good service and you can tell that he aims to please a customer. Over the years- I have patronized Audiophile Pioneer ( even when they were still on the other side beside Sogo which is now Robinsons ) and I have seen the staff change quickly. Jaime easily ranks as one of the better ones.

On the bad side.... I recently visited the Yamaha shop over in a mall in Singapore and the service was so plain bad-- rather non-existent. The staff won't even help you unless they're sure you're going to buy something.

The Guitar shop in Kuala Lumpur which is right beside the Regent in Bukit Bintang had some pretty accommodating staff. Very warm welcome and service given. Unfortunately--many of the staff are not well versed in gear specs and accessories.

Very good customer service....

Guitar Center - Sherman Oaks, CA - Ventura ave.
- salesman approached me with a pick at hand and said, "would you like to play some of our guitars sir." (with a smile)

Guitar Center - Hollywood - Sunset Blvd.
Helped me all through out shopping some cables, picks, straps, mic stand...inquired about a MusicMan Sillhoutte...called the factory in San Luis Obispo to see if the guitar I want is in stock.

SamASH at Canoga Park, De Soto St.
Musician salesmen and women(long hair, tatoo, piercings...the whole getup) ...down to earth and knows the equipment.

CARVIN store at Hollywood
helped me picked out an amp stand....good customer service.

Note: Don't ask for suggestions and recommendations from these stores about vacuum tubes.....they sell it at a high price and don't know crap.

Good Morning Phil!

Yep-- I agree with you on the two Guitar Centers you mentioned. I go to LA regularly and one of my stops is the Guitar Center in LA. My favorite staffer there is the friendly guy manning the accessory counter. Always a smile to welcome you in his area of operations.  I often visit the accessory counters first as there's really a wide variety ot select from and the guy always knows his stuff.

Regards!

I called up a music store in Baguio City to inquire
on a guitar i saw there once.

the conversation goes like this
harmless: good morning sir, meron pa ba kayo available na &%$@# at mgkano?
salesman: meron sir, pero mahal!

wow what an answer, last november 2005 lng nangyari

Audiophile Dagupan City Branch
They were very accomodating, even though i told them i
was just asking for prices and availability of an ibanez i saw online
they even called up their Manila office to see if they had that model,
they even offered to order it for me cause they didnt have it.

Musician's Corner Dagupan City
good customer service, even though i was just browsing.

Haven't really had a chance to visit the music stores there in PI when I was there (very long time ago) but from what I've read here and in different forums seems like the sales people doesn't really want any business. Most of the comments about them sales people are either arrogant or rude and un helpfull. Not a good way to run a business.

I have to agree with boss Phil. I guess it's different here in L.A. Most, if not all, of the music stores have nice and accomodating sales people (the girls look nice as well, hehe  ). They will even let you try their expensive gear providing you ask them first. They're not discriminating towards customers. During summer I go Guitar Center in my long shorts, flip-flops (tsinelas) or Jesus sandals (sandalyas), and sando. They treat me the same way as anybody else that walks in the store. You don't even have to buy anything. Could it be because they work on commision here? Hmm... well... whatever... they still treat their customer right.

Perfect Pitch Ermita (Rob Place) is probably the best branch that I've seen so far from Yupangco.
When I went there to look for a new acoustic guitar, Ryan (the salesman) was so accomodating, even if he knew I was just gonna test some guitars.
I actually bought the guitar the following day.

Bsta....ang bait nila dun. Kahit yung PR nila...

I must agree, Mesa Sunset is kinda snobish. I just go there to look at the gears, specially when they used to have Andersons and Groshs. I feel intimidated to try anything there. Although, there was this 1 good salesman before a few years back named Jimbo Head. He used to work at West L.A. music. I knew him way back then because he was the one who sold me my first decent amp head.  guess he's moved on now coz' don't see him anymore.

Another store that at first seems kinda snobish but isn't is Carvin Holly (sorry Phil). They will just let you walk around and not offer any help or assistance unless you ask them too. Then again, I usually just go there to browse and try out gears and not to buy, hehe. The last thing I need is a salesperson up in my face bugging me, hehe. The good side about them is that they are nice enough to let you try out they're gears in the back room and nice enough to talk to, not just sales talk but real musicians talk. I guess snob for the first impression but down to earth afterwards.

Good stores:
 (local):
Perfect Pitch Ermita, Audiophile Alabang, Perfect Pitch Megamall... very friendly and accommodating staff!

(abroad):
Tommy Lee Hong Kong = lots of choices, first time ko makapunta sa guitar store na abroad kaya memorable tong store na to hehe
Guitar Center Tukwila/Seattle = great deals, gives discounts/freebies
SamAsh Raleigh = good crowd, lots of jazz players who hang out there
SamAsh Las Vegas = always has stock of items

Bad stores:
Perfect Pitch Southmall = sold me a Gibson Les Paul Standard with LOTS of damage without even telling me! they told me that they'll just deliver the guitar to my house and when they did, that's when i saw the body scratches and binding cracks. i returned it instead for a full refund
Guitar Center Charlotte = sold me some defective pedals, i had to wait till my next trip there to have em replaced

good stores

bad stores/crappy salespeoplesss

You were referring to Perfect Pitch Robinson's Place.
The dreadlock guy is a really good salesperson, along with everyone else at that branch. You should see him when there aren't any customers around (maybe in the afternoon) - he plays the guitar, with effects pa. Then he has a keyboardist jamming with him. Magaling!  :D
Although I kinda forgot his name...Tanong ko nga next week...

The guys is Perferct Pitch Ali Mall are quite ok. The dreadlocked guy mentioned earlier used to work there as well with good guy manager Marvin -- who was since transferred to another branch.

With JB Quad long ago-- I was there inquiring if they had any hard cases for a Gibson Les Paul. The manager was ok but kept on telling me that the Les Paul was actually pronounced a "Le Paul" [  without the "s"] because it was a French brand daw.

I acted like I did not hear her and just thanked her for time -- shaking my head as I walked out.

I just went this afternoon at Guitar Center here in Harahana, Louisiana. Khet anong guitar pde mo try! I was there for 2 hours. Wala paki-alam mga salesman

There's also a ladder ready in case you want to get a guitar hanging on the wall.

I was a disaapointed with the Gibson SG.. :( I tried 3 different models..the neck feels so round tapos ang payat ng body.

I hate it when the saleman says, "mahal yan" when I ask for a guitar/whatever's price.
It ruins my day, napapasagot tuloy ako ng, "Wala akong pakialam kung mahal siya, ang gusto ko yung price!"

I've experienced more of that though, in other stores...not guitar stores.
Yung mga tipong department store...Dun ako nababadtrip minsan.

Pero I've had no problems whatsoever with Yamaha or Perfect Pitch stores that I've visited. Hopefully I don't encounter any.
Inconsistent...if they're going to be bad salesmen, might as well do it everyday.

JB megamall... bait yung isang sales person dun... galing, ask lng me about G2 ng zoom, kwentuhan na kami about G2.1u, tpos napunta sa PRS, Dean.... parang tambay nga lang kami dun... nde pa ako bumili dat time... i just asked for the price, he gave me a card then said that if i'm going to buy na, present ko daw yung card...  when i looked at it, he gave me 20% off the prices on the stuff i inquired... asteeg...

shempre, na-curious ako... too good to be true para sakin, so i went sa salonga sa cubao, asked for the price of that same stuff, ayaw pa niya pahawak... he said yun daw yung price, i asked kung may bawas pa ba yun, sabi nya hanggang 5% daw discount nila... o well, can't blame them though.... nagkukuripot lng nman ako.... malay mo ba dba...

up to now nakakausap ko pa rin through landlyn yung sales person na yun, inquire me ng bagong gamit nila...:) hehehe, looking forward to make deals with them again

stores i like: JB Megamall, Salonga Cubao, Perfect Pitch Megamall, Audio Studio Megamall, Audiophile Cubao, Perfect Pitch Alimall, well, basically all of them. except for RJ stores... for some reason medyo rude yung mga attendants nila. ewan ko ba, i think it's part of their training, hehe. tinanong ko lang kung pwede kong tingnan yung neck-thru na strat nila eh ayaw banaman abutin. sabi nila ito-tono pa daw. what a lame excuse. sabihin nalang nya sana na "sorry, tinatamad ako, tingnan mo nalang". tapos habang tinitingnan ko yung guitars nila parang ayaw pahawak. para bang sinasabi sayo ng tingin nya eh, "hoy, bibilhin mo ba yan? kasi kung hindi eh umalis ka na dito." bwiset diba? and they don't take the time to "entertain" their clients. chika-chikahin man lang sana nila ng konte. sa JB Megamall nga eh, wala talaga akong planong bumili ng effects nung time na yun eh, pero yung isa nilang attendant eh nagja-jamming dun gamit yung g2 nya. so i asked him what the unit can do, so dinemo naman nya sakin at chika chika kami. so yun, natuwa naman ako so i bought the unit, hehe. chaka bait yung mga tao sa JB Mega, sila dennis, etc. sayang wala na si jess dun, yung magaling mag-gitara, hehe.  basta for me, RJ service sucks. sayang maganda panaman mga gamit nila.

I've had a different experience with (an) RJ store. I went to RJ's Glorietta branch a month or two ago. When I entered, the Les Pauls caught my eye, so tingin-tingin ako. And I didn't even say a thing. Ang ganda ng araw nung salesmen eh.
In the end, I didn't find anything at RJ to GAS for. But it was a good experience.

Nainis ako sa JB Park Square. Walang namamansin kahit isang salesman. Bwiset. Di na ko babalik dun.

With JB Quad long ago-- I was there inquiring if they had any hard cases for Gibson Les Paul. The manager was ok but kept on telling me that the Les Paul was actually pronounced a "Le Paul" [  without the "s"] because it was a French brand daw.
 :D

This is funny!

hahaha, had a similar experience sa isang music store along sta. mesa (near SM centerpoint) tanong ako howmuch yung SG copy nila while pointing at the guitar sa display window. .

Does the bald guy in Audiophile answer calls? I called them once asking about the Digitech BM. This guy answered the phone and told me to dial this number. Ang bilis nya magsalita, i wasnt able to jot down the number, and before i can ask him the number again binagsakan ba naman ako ng phone. As in nagsasalita pa ako. Binagsakan ako with a loud bang! Soooobrang bastos!!

The folks at Electronics Depot Rob Place are quite nice. I was there to ask about their EQ sbi nila wala. Then sbi nila if i wanna try the other pedals sbi ko no thanks coz di ko namn bbilhin eh. Sbi nila ok lang daw. And then the guys FORCED me to play with their stuff, amps and all. Cool guys. I would surely reward their service with my purchase. :)

I really agree with Machine_Head about Electronics Depot.
I was once asked about these Behringer speakers (pang-iPod sana), & the salesman told me to take a sit, & listen to music for as long as I want. I stayed for 15 mins., immersed in those speakers' beautiful music...
Then a few weeks later, binili ko sa kanila.  :D

Then aftewards, I asked about their guitar cables. The saleswoman was very accomodating, then when I asked about one of their amps, pina-try nya talaga sakin. So I was even able to try out the Behringer V-Tone guitar pack...

Like I said before, mabait din un Perfect Pitch Rob Place.  :D

Hehehe. No problem, gutz! Medyo a bit elderly naman  talaga ako. Been playing for close to 30 years now and I have no plans to stop!  :D

Additionally, I do wish someone from Audiophile would take the effort to inform  Eric  that he's been rubbing people off in a wrong way.  Sa tagal ko nang nabubuhay sa daigdig na ito, I have already come across almost every type of character in the guitar world and even been friends with a few of them.

I know Eric from long ago (heheh, there's that term "long ago" again!) when he was still one of the sales staff of  Perefect Pitch around 1993 and he was quite alright then. Very helpful and accommodating pa siay noon. Wonder what happened....  I gues people do change.

i really hate the way he rubs off people when checking out some of their gear at their main branch.... we, people dont automatically buy stuff. we try them out, but we also take good care of that particular guitar / amp / effect, etc. while trying it . . . . ryt???

he's only nice to guys kung bibili na....

there was this instance about september last year , when i was at their main branch checking out their stuff, a guy bought an RG that same afternoon (i was about 30 minutes earlier when the guy who bought the guitar arrived) but instead of him (the buyer) testing the axe himself, eric just grabbed the guy's axe and showed off (vai stuff, satch, blah, doing [gooey brown stuff] to his axe, yanking the trem base without the bar attached) kahit puro sabit, 2loy2 lang 2gtog nya.... i saw the face of the guy na napapangiti na lang.... pero obviously asar na asar...

i was checking effects, acoustics and cables then, .... and i think eric played for almost an hour with the guys newly bought axe!!!

anu yon??? guitar clinic???!!!

now you've got a sales show-off rubbing off anybody who gets to their branch... ang konti2 na nga ng mga ok na guitar shops d2 sa pinas and we end up having this type of treatment....  :(  :(  :(  :( i hope the management of audiophile sees this for proper action....

A portion, by trying to sound smart they reveal their true stupidity. "...and world peace..."

Hehehehe. Nanonood ka ba ng The O.C.? :?
hahahahah I hate that show....the only primetime show I've been watching is American Idol and Dancing with the stars......hehehe....baduy baduy nung mga shows na OC ...hindi realisitic.....you might think that show protrays life here in Orange County, California...it doesn't....hindi ganyan ka hot and kayaman ang mga ordinaryong tao don....it's  hollywood....it's fiction....although I understand what you are saying.

Marlon of AP Greenhills is an extremely nice guy.
I bought a dread hardcase a few weeks ago, & when he talked to me, he talked to me like ang dami kong alam. Especially about Ibanez guitars.

Kasi ang totoo I only know stuff from what other people in the forums say.

Back in December when I bought my Oscar Schmidt at PP Rob, I was a bit nervous kasi first time ko bumili ng guitar sa ganung store!
But when I went to AP Greenhills, eh at home yung feeling ko. So a simple hardcase purchase turned into a 30-minute long conversation about all sorts of Ibanez guitars. It even came to the point that I asked him about the most affordable Ibanez electric guitars...and it wasn't long before he began showing me (catalog pics of) RG's, JS, even JEM7s...
He even went into the special ordering process...price differences depending on country of production...
Ang yaman ko eh no?

Nevertheless, I'd buy an Audiophile product from that branch again. Kahit medyo malayo. :D

I really like "JB Megamall". Bait ni Bike and sobrang approachable. Same experience sa Zoom G2.1u, he was the one who gave me a contact card. May mga bago silang tao dun. Bait silang lahat! :D  :P

"Audio Studio" in megamall din was really accommodating. Pero no worries kase and ganda talaga ng hopitality nila. :)

"Electronics Depot" megamall din ang lupit ng service. Okay din ng mga Behringer gear prices nila.

Last stop, "Audiophile Alimall". Kahit may ginagawa sila, they would find time to answer all your questions and concerns. Small talk puedeng puede rin!

Depende sa State, Phil.  May sales tax sila sa Utah, Missouri, and Washington.

Try mo rin sweetwater.com  Free US shipping on many items, no minimum pero medyo limited ang choices.

Very accomodating and mabilis lapitan ang mga sales person s lazer, sa JB ATC.
This week may binili ako sa audiophile festival mall. parang ayaw akong bentahan nung sales person don.. sayang at di ko nakuha yung pangalan at na i post dito. although di sya ngasasalita  ng masama, pero the way he approach me e very offending on my side. parang kulang nalang e tanungin nya kung "may pera ka ba at dito ka nagpunta?".  pang 2 ko ng exprience yan sa audiophile festival mall. nung una(last 2006) nung bibili ako ng premier na drum kit.  parang ayaw akong sagutin sa mga tanong ko nung isang sales person. sa sobrang asar ko umalis muna ako then after an hour siguro bumalik na ako.. then iba na yung nag assist sakin kung di ako ngkakamali e ronald ang name nung nag assist n bago sakin(long hair iyon e) . then ayon maganda ang approcah nya at mabait kausap, tsaka ako nagdecide na bibili na ako.. yung isang sales person n suplado ayon nakatingin nalang sakin nung ikinakahon na yung drumset.
BAD3p..

shops that i like:
JB music, alabang town center (nice people, kahit on-looker ka lang..)
RJ, festival mall, alabang (this is where i bought my Tele..)
Lazer, festival mall, alabang (hindi nga lang lahat matino kausap... but some are nice..)
hi-fi lounge, festival mall, alabang (accommodating silang lahat..)

shops that i don't like: (reason: kailangan yata mayaman ka para makabili sa mga shop na 'to...)
JB music, SM south mall (tama kayo, ang tingin nila sayo, walang pambili...)
perfect pitch, SM south mall (ganun din... with matching looking from head-to-toe..)
Lazer, SM Sta. Rosa (same story as JB SM souhtmall)
AP festival mall, alabang (same story part 2)

Hmm. I wouldn't say that it's a bad store, yung staff lang yung bad.

Sabe niya, sige
para sayo P200 nalang. Grabe talaga. ABUSO SA CUSTOMERS.

JB Music SM North - Wala naman akong masasabi dito dahil nagpupunta lang ako dito to check out their new
guitars. I don't buy strings from them. :D

Audiophle          - Wala talaga akong masasabi dahil mababait silang lahat! :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For me, there ain't no Good store and Bad store, it just depends on what you need.
