Gospel Saxophonist

Hello. Are there any Christian saxophonist here? I'd like to ask your opinion about your experiences in different reed brands and reed setup. Is there anyone here who actually were able to make a hand-made reed made from our locally produced 'kawayan'?

Hello sir:) i regularly play during sunday services in our Center:) The reeds i use are compatibe with my Playing style and mouthpiece setup.  I use a Vandoren Jumbo A55 Hardrubber or an LA SAX Metal mouthpiece combined with Vandoren JAVA "Jazz" reeds.

reeds are made with high quality standards, we cant just make them by hand with any kawayan out there:)  well... there are many ingenious ways filipinos get around things.  Malay mo, meron na pala gumagawa ng LOCAL reeds:)

You are so right about ur pvt. message kultabasi, only a handful of people can play and wants to play saxophone. from among the 4 y.p. that I am training, none of them has the genuine desire and interest to learn saxophone. Mas interesado silang matuto ng keyboard. So, I teach them more on keyboard. There are 1 male and 3 females. The only one who has potential is a little girl. But her problem is masyado maigsi ang kanyang daliri. Her pinky finger is so short, she can't play the lower DO (low C).

I have heard a comment from a forum somewhere that there are very FEW saxophonist in Christian churches. I think this is true indeed. I have visited a lot of Christian churches nearby and of my friends, none of them have a saxophonist. We are a rare breed.

Lagi ako nagpapalit ng reed lalo na kapag maitim na at di na maganda ang tunog. Magastos nga lang itong instrument na to. unlike keyboard and guitar.

well, for me kasi... i rotate my reeds para tumagal.  Eg: during rehersals, i use 1 reed, then the next day, another one... bale rotation sila.. para di malaspag.  ANg 1 box ng Vandoren reeds, tumatagal ng 1 year sakin.  oh, important rin yung quality ng reeds. cheaper reeds, observation ko lang... wear out faster.

Hi Bro!... nice to see you have the passion.  Aslong as youre in it in the long run, masarap tumugtog talaga ng reed instrument:) Err, pag dating sa sax, i wouldnt rreally recommend the cheapest.. pero ive been taught to get the best na kaya ng BUDGET.  lalo na if youve really decided na gusto mo matuto.  Learning to play an instrument is an investment.. along with the instrument in itself.. hihih... btw.. magaling ka mag Freedom at Midnight:)

Best sax to start learning on, here sa pinas in my opinion is ALTO.. sha pinaka maraming available accessories EG: Mouthpiece and Reeds.  You can also ask many here sa boards...im sure maraming nag tuturo at nagbibigay ng lessons bro:)

Hi mga sir! Ako I started sa church talaga as a flute player then after 2 years nag-aral ng saxophone.

The best pa rin talaga ang branded reeds, better sounding and longer lasting. However, sa problema ng reeds wearing out coz of constant practice, it is also best to use a separate (maybe cheap one) reed. And I discover that we can repair the reed kung yung dulo lang naman ang nasira. I usually experience that.

I used a good quality reed for actual performance. Pero kung grabe and irrepareable and sira, tapon na sa basurahan.
