Hello everyone,I just wanted to share about Mang Raul and what he does.He`s been fixing my electronic gears for sometime now and I feel the need to share it to everyone here in guitar central.I know there had been thraeds about Mang Raul before but this time I will post a how he looks like and a few of his creations,hope you enjoy.
In my experience with Mang Raul,he`s the best I know when talking about electronic musician`s gear.He makes amps,effects,repairs,even guitars.He`s amazing imho.

I was repairing this DS-1. I looked at it for two days almost straight...di ko mahuli ang sira. I had all the schems and readouts. My kuya (the original ECE in the family) looked at it for two hours and couldn't find the problem.
Kaya "call a friend" na ko, pinapunta ko si Mang Raul to fix it (marami namang ipapagawa sa kanya, di lang yun). It took him all of 20 minutes to find the problem. A broken resistor, literally broken, invisible to the naked eye. Put...
It should mean something when a fellow electronics professional says it: Mang Raul is the MAN !

nasunog yung orignal speaker, naparewind ilang minutes lang sunog ulit. ipina-ayos ko dito sa probinsya, and replace the speaker galing raon, gumana naman pero ang pangit ng sound parang lata ang tunog, kaya itinabi na muna. test it lately ayaw na ulit gumana.

He makes heads only so you have to have a cab. its not a big issue though, as e makes real neat point to point wiring.

its a 120 watt before now it can now be switched to 60 or 120 watts. :)

as usual he didn't need to change parts at all when he fixed my amp. not even the single preamp tube!
And my pedal has improved tremedously after the mod he made. I couldn't believe that an already great sounding pedal could still be vastly improved! And to top all of this, he said his tube pedal design was even more versatile and much more natural sounding than this one!!
so i'm now currently saving up for one of his custom drive pedals! G.A.S.!!!! :mrgreen:

dinala ko yung amp sunday ng tanghali, chineck-up kinagabihan.
monday morning, nagtext na pwede ko na daw kunin.
sana nga at magkaroon pa sya ng mga apprentice to pass on the

It's true what I've heard - Mang Raul is indeed a legend. Ang bilis gumawa. He really knows his stuff. In 30 minutes, ayus na yung tube amp. I brought it to an electrician before pero wala nagawa. Thanks sir Raul!

Yes he does some home service. Sa charge ni Mang raul depende sa sira ng amp, sa components/parts na bibilhin nya and labor. I have a problem with my power amp chip/transistor sa Solidstate amp ko before. He checked everything and charged me for 1,400. 700 + yung transistor and assuming 700 yung charge nya sa labor. Pero sa bahay nya ginawa yun.Mahirap magestimate bro kasi nakadepende lahat sa kanya pag nakita na nya problema ng amp mo. Lahat kc chinicheck nya. kahit yung di mo alam na sira isusuggest nya na ipaayus mo din.

Been to mang raul's place yesterday afternoon para paayus sana yung effect pedal ko. Its a long trip from the south to Sampaloc and traffic was heavy. Mang Raul checks my effect pedal and shows me this beautiful fender tweed showman amp head he was fixing. After looking up to my pedal. He showed me the problem and he told me to buy the part from a dealer in manila.
He didn't charge me with anything. After checking my pedal and we talk for almost an hour about Amps, amps, custom amps Famous people he knew in the music business and some customers who are in a way interestingly funny. Kinamusta din nya yung amps na pinagawa ko before. Some of the stories we talked about killed my GAS for those ''famous amps'', that I was looking forward to buying in the future, He said amps that has a wrong route or wiring, same type of circuitboard and has durability issues and I'm glad I asked him. I was now looking forward to ask him to make me an amp with my own personal specs and can be a clone of a famous amp. That's just me, Famous brands have that retail value to sell with if you want to sell them. That's good but if you want to keep your personal amp for your personal use and don't have any plans of selling it, I guess customized amp heads are one way to go. But he also told me what famous amps are worth the buy. :razz:
Mang Raul is the the very best amp technician in the country. Even rockstars ask him a lot to maintain their amps. He has a cool sense of humor, very witty and very humble. It was a fun afternoon kahapon. Too bad its just a short time, Because he has a very very tight schedule on repairs and home services. I'm looking forward to coming back soon. I want to try his old school vox head and the jazz chorus he has at home :-D

Yup. Didn't want to miss the opportunity na may legend na dadaan sa bahay.. :-) actually medyo napakisuyuan ko lang din si Mang Raul.. May sinervisan kasi siyang studio dito sa Los Baņos nung umaga.. After lunch, nakisuyo ako na tingnan niya yung mga amp sa bahay.. tapos after nun, sa Calamba naman siya..

Yup DRRI bro! This was actually mga 3rd quarter of last year pa, nothing serious konting cleaning/check up lang actually yung ginawa niya. I just wanted to have peace of mind at that time since palagi kong bitbit ito sa jams/gigs. :)

My VK112's drive channel has not been cooperating with for the past few months already. I asked Mang Raul if he could drop by the mountains of Rizal to check my Amp... He dropped by this morning, fixed the VK and the Hotcabs and the service done is priceless. Learned a lot about my amp and appreciated it more (dapat Bandit bibilin ko before) but he told me that nothing beats the sound of cranked tubes so am very blessed. He suggested din a couple of upgrades to improve the sound of the amp.+1

He has a lot of schematics of tube amps to check to make sure your amp is working properly. he even had a schematic drawn/copied for one of my amps.
Mabilis gumawa and pulido. First time I went to their place pinameryenda pa ako ng siopao at coke. lol.
Very knowlegable in all types and brands of amps. Sana he teaches to share the knowledge, parang apprenticeship.
Easy to reach coming from Espana, basta text/call for scheduling, then make sure your side mirrors are tucked in baka masagi ka sa street nila, hehe.
I asked him about his custom amps and according to him a simple 1 watt amp will cost 5K while a JCM 800 clone wil be 14K all in parts and labor. That's a vast difference in price to the 115K JCM 800 in JB :). Your amp is done in 3-4 weeks.
He's a tube amp expert. I just hope he teaches his craft to spread the knowledge.

Yeah 14K, nagulat din ako. But he explained that its a clone that is 800's style. Which makes sense, kasi baka output tranformer pa lng 5k na eh.. I was thinking baka lower wattage.

Exactly. But I think The main impediment to this happening is Capital.
Yes, we have a lot of talented Tube amp Techs like the man and Guitar Luthiers, but they won't be able to set up a school themselves..
Workshops could be a start, (Like Bruce Egnater) less budget and logistics but still they would need financiers and sponsors.
There are new techs around but they charge a lot more. 1.5 K just for a bias? That's a lot.

"Overpriced repairs" is a dangerous thing to tread on, as it's a function of supply and demand. I'm of the opinion that Raul charges very modestly, and to an extent unfairly towards himself. He could easily command top dollar elsewhere for the talent and experience he has, but it just so happens that we're lucky. If Raul increases his rates, I can bet marami dito bigla ang aangal simply because they have no appreciation of what the guy knows and can do. Ugaling Pilipino yan e, we want the best but we don't want to pay for it.

IMHO, if I had zero knowledge about how my amp works, paying someone as knowledgeable as Mang Raul to fix my equipment is an absolutely affordable way to avoid irreparable damage to the amp (or my death).

I agree with this. Long ago Mang Raul fixed 2 of my amps. We were talking about sharing or maybe teaching his wisdom
and knowledge about amps. I also talked about the same subject to his wife. His wife is more concerned about Mang Raul's

apprentice you have to make amp modding/fixing your life spend all the time with him to learn about amps electronics and you
must have a bit of knowledge about the craft.
The man is truly legendary and one of a kind as well. I hope he could teach the younger generation about his thing.
When the time comes (knock on wood) if he's not around we are all left with opportunists and amp guru wannabes and no one
to depend on for complicated amp problems etc. Its a sad thing really if you think about it.

I agree with this. Long ago Mang Raul fixed 2 of my amps. We were talking about sharing or maybe teaching his wisdom
and knowledge about amps. I also talked about the same subject to his wife. His wife is more concerned about Mang Raul's

Thanks for sharing bro. Did he ever mention coming out with low quantity - high quality (bowteek) amps bearing his name? Kinda like the Dumble of the PH hehe.

He didn't mention anything about low quality-high quality amps bearing his name before. But we talked about a customized amp I wanted him to build (I canvassed first but in the end didn't really pursued it and bought a different amp instead).
I think that time was like 8k-10k for a 30 watt to 50 watt head. I asked specifically for a Marshall JCM/plexi type of head. He said he can do it. If I can also send him a schematic mas maganda daw.
I wish I can see and hear a dumble type amp with his name on it. Grabe lupit nun! :wave:
